Abstract

This study was carried out to analyze semiotic signs appearing on the names of Acehnese online newspapers. The method used in this research was qualitative by using content analysis, and the technique used for this research was documentation. The instrument used to collect the data for this research was a checklist by reviewing the names of Acehnese online newspapers: Aceh Redaksi, Kabar Aceh, Aceh TerUpdate, Aceh Info, Aceh WorldTime, and Acehzone_id. The data was analyzed using the sign theory of icons, indices, and symbols. The result of the analysis found that the signs which appeared on the names of Acehnese online newspapers and the meaning which appeared on them were related to the history of Aceh. They have the same characteristics in the use of colors: red, white, and black. These are the hues used on Aceh’s flag, which serves to represent the identity of the Acehnese. Since the newspaper organizations were also part of the Aceh community, Acehnese online newspapers also had the same culture. Thus, using the flag colors strengthened their identity and signified their origin. White is a symbol of purity, honesty, and kindness, meanwhile black refers to a warning and grief to the heroes, and finally, red symbolizes courage and heroism. The representation of the flag and people, in general, revealed the Acehnese desire to have a distinct identity from other Indonesian ethnicities in the 38 provinces of this country. Such portrayal was designed to create a distinct identity within the diversity of Indonesia.

Abstract

For English teaching practice, productive talks that spur students’ comprehension, creativity, and problem-solving ability are vital. This research aimed at finding out the spoken discourse based on six phases of microstructure in English classrooms. The data were obtained recordings and observations of two English teachers, chosen through purposive sampling, from Islamic senior high schools in Aceh. The data were concerned with the lexical density or the ratio of content to grammatical or function words within a clause. They were analyzed through thematic analysis which consists of five steps: data familiarization, code generation, theme search, themes revision, and theme definition. It was found that the total lexical density obtained by the first teacher in Class A was 63.66% and in class, B was 66.52%, while the second teacher in Class A was 71. 74% and in Class B was 68.12%. The second teacher 2 in Class A had a higher lexical density than the first teacher even though both of them are considered to produce a high lexical density of around 60-70%. The formality of spoken discourse of the two teachers shows that the first teacher produced 172.5 while the second teacher produced 184. It means that the second teacher's spoken discourse was more formal than the first teacher’s discourse. To analyze the utterances of teachers and to find the density of language used in the classrooms during the teaching and learning process is important because they implicitly inform whether the language used is understandable for the students or not.

Abstract

Lexical innovation is a linguistic phenomenon that reflects the dynamic development of language amid social change and the rise of digital culture. This study aims to describe the forms of lexical innovation used by Generation Z speakers of Acehnese in their everyday interactions, particularly within the domain of digital communication. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data consist of authentic utterances collected from online conversations on WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok, recordings of face-to-face interactions, and informal interviews with Generation Z speakers. The data were gathered through non-participant observation, documentation of screenshot messages, and responsive interviewing. The analysis draws on theories of lexical innovation and the framework of contextual clues to word-making to examine how new lexical forms are created, how their functions shift, and how their meanings change. The findings reveal that Generation Z produces lexical innovations through four main mechanisms: (1) adaptation of Indonesian slang, (2) phonological modification, (3) morphological play, and (4) semantic shift. Forms such as emang boleh, sapay, gemoy, lucknut, misqueen, ani-ani, online, and di luar jangkauan illustrate how elements of Indonesian, English, and digital-technology discourse are utilized to create new variations within Acehnese speech. These innovations serve to express humor, social closeness, evaluation, and generational identity. The study demonstrates that the Acehnese language continues to adapt to technological developments and the communicative patterns of the digital generation, revealing linguistic creativity that contributes to sustaining the vitality of regional languages in contemporary digital communication.
