Abstract

This research was conducted to know the effect of Think-Talk-Write strategy on the students’ writing analytical exposition improvement and to know the students’ responses toward the use of this strategy in teaching writing an analytical exposition text. This is a quasi-experimental research in which the samples were taken from two classes, experimental class (XI-IPA F) which consisted of 34 students and control class (XI-IPA G) which consisted of 36 students. The instruments of this research were pre-test and post-test. The result showed that the mean scores of pre-test in the experimental class was 61.47, while the mean score of post-test in the experimental class was 76.67. Moreover, both scores were analyzed by comparing the z-z-score of pre-test and post-test in the experimental class. The result of the z-test was -11.09 at the level significance 5% with assumption if the z-score is beyond -1.96 and 1.96, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Furthermore, the result of the questionnaire showed that the students gave positive responses toward the implementation of Think-Talk-Write strategy on teaching writing analytical exposition text where 57% of students strongly agreed and 40% of students agreed with the implementation of Think-Talk-Write strategy. In conclusion, the implementation of Think-Talk-Write strategy could improve the students’ ability to write an analytical exposition text.

Abstract

This study is aimed at discovering the connotation and denotation that can be interpreted in shop signs found in Banda Aceh. Additionally, it also sought for the visuality, spatiality, and gestures that can be interpreted in shop sign found in Banda Aceh. This study used the qualitative approach in carrying out the research process which is the critical discourse analysis. The subject of this study was the shop signs that can be found in Banda Aceh while the object of this study is all the texts, pictures, and symbols in the signs. The data collection was done by taking pictures of the shop signs. The data analysis was carried out by using coding analysis and a three-step analysis. The results show that the denotation found in the shop signs are mostly the shop name, pictures, and philosophical symbols. Concerning to connotation, most meanings carried out in the shop signs are culturally interpreted. Moreover, concerning the visuality, the color used depends on the shop types whether it is black and white to highlight classiness and youthfulness, colorful colors for baby shops, and appetizing colors for the desert shop. In regards to the spatiality, most of the important information is placed on the left and the center part of the board sign. This is in order to ease information recognition. Last, the gestures are rarely used in the shop sign. It was only found in a coffee shop which is the steaming coffee cup, flying balloon in baby shops.

Abstract

Making errors is a natural process of learning. Writing as a productive skill is important for students to express their ideas. However, students conducted errors in the productive skills. Therefore, this study is intended to find out types of errors made by students in written English. This study employed the qualitative method where the Error Analysis was implemented. The subject of this study is students in first grade of SMAN 1 Abdya and the object of this study were the errors found in written English. The population of this research was all of students in first grade which consists of 208 students from all study programs where 25 % of the populations were taken as the sample. To collect the data, written tests were conducted. The written test shows the percentage of writing errors, including omission errors, which is 58.38%, misformation errors with a total of 16.48%, misordering error 13.89%, and addition of 11.26%. The errors were found when students omitted 'to be' as main verb. Second, students tend to add 'to' after modal auxiliaries such as 'can' or 'will'. Third, misformation errors happened when students could not form the verb correctly. Last, the misordering errors were produced when students put words randomly. Consequently, it was discovered that the errors made by students were impacted by their native language, and this is the interlanguage move.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the frequency of three- word and four- word of lexical bundles which were used in the essay writing of the undergraduate students studying at English Education Department of Syiah Kuala University. This study employed a corpus based analysis which compiled a specialized small corpus consisting of 161 students’ essays under linguistic topic. In order to generate the frequent list of sequences, computational software named AntConc 3.5.8 by Laurent Anthony was used. The results showed that the number of three-word bundles was higher than four-word bundles in terms of the frequency of co-occurrence in which the most common expression the function of as three-word bundles and the advantages of being as four-word bundles were found.

Abstract

The educational advertisements are displayed in various media: printed or electronic media. The advertisements are set in many types, forms, and styles of the language used to persuade customers. However, they have not been clearly investigated yet until there are no certain determinates to these cases, especially, the language styles use. This research aims to describe the styles of language in the educational advertisement of The Jakarta Post newspaper published from May 2018 to August 2019. The theory used in this study was put forward by Moriarty, Mitchell, and Wells (2012). This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that there were three language styles from twenty-four advertisements that appeared in the educational advertisement on The Jakarta Post newspaper. These were hard-sell style, straightforward style, and the combination of hard-sell and straightforward. However, the most dominant language style appearing in the educational advertisement of The Jakarta Post newspaper in May 2018 to August 2019 edition was a hard-sell style because the language style of this advertisement provided detailed information in which it is very often used in displayed advertisements.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to analyze the use of Acehnese-Chamic derived lexical items used by young speakers. Besides, it also intended to find out whether there is a language change among younger speakers of Acehnese. The data were gathered at the English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of UIN Ar-Raniry University. The informants of this study were English Education students of UIN Ar-Raniry with the average age 20 to 21. There were 12 students involved as the informants of this research. This qualitative study used wordlist interview and interview guide as its method of data collection. The data were analyzed descriptively. The study found that many Acehnese-Chamic derived lexical items were not used by the younger speakers of Acehnese. Furthermore, there was language change which occurred among the younger speakers of Acehnese which consisted of phonological loss in the form of initial consonant dropping, initial syllable dropping and monopthongization. Besides, lexical loss in the form of primary loss and secondary loss are also occurred among younger speakers of Acehnese in this study. Moreover, the younger speakers of Acehnese felt that Acehnese and Indonesian used at home, Indonesian is dominantly used in campus, Indonesian is more convenient than Acehnese, Acehnese used for making jokes, and Acehnese used depending on the partner of speaking were the factors which hinder them from using Acehnese-Chamic derived lexical items.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the types of language learning strategies employed by higher and lower achieving students on speaking skill and to find out the impacts of language learning strategies employed by them. A questionnaire was used as the instrument of this study. The sample of this research were 82 students who were chosen based on the criteria: (1) the students already passed all the Speaking I to IV classes, (2) the students consist of higher achieving students (score ≥B) and lower achieving students (score ≤C), and (3) the students allowed the researcher to obtain their speaking scores. Thus, purposive sampling was used here. In this research, the researcher used Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by Oxford (2003) to determine the students’ language learning strategy. The result revealed that the higher achieving students used memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies in learning speaking. On the other hand, the lower achieving students generally did not use the learning strategies in their learning activities. Therefore, as the impact of this learning habit, they do not possess a good speaking ability and achieve low scores in speaking class.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the implementation of the mime media to enhance students’ writing skills on recount text at the tenth-grade students of Islamic Senior High School Langsa. This study is quantitative research which used some numerical data that were analyzed statistically. The subjects of this study were 42 students who were taken from X MIA 3 as an experimental group and X MIA 4 as a control group. The instruments used to collect the data were pretest, posttest, and questionnaire. The result of the pretest score in the experimental class was 63.61, and the result of the posttest score in the experimental class was 77. The result of the pretest score in the control class was 63.80, and the result of the posttest score in the control class was 74.47. The test of the hypothesis using the t-test formula showed that the t-count was higher than the t-table. The score of the t-value was 1.72, while t-table on = 5% with df 40 was 1.68, which means the hypothesis was accepted. It could be concluded that there was a different result between the students who were taught by using mime media and those who were not, where the students who were taught by using mime media gained better scores. In the questionnaire, the researchers found that almost all the students choose “agree” toward mime media in writing recount text processes.

Abstract

YouTube is one of the biggest platforms where people around the world can share informative videos. In YouTube, we can find the code-switching and code-mixing phenomenon easily. There are two dominant types of code-switching and code-mixing. The first type is code-switching and code-mixing used by Group 1: Indonesian YouTubers who live abroad, while the second type is code-switching and code-mixing used by Group 2: Indonesian YouTubers who live in the country.  This study aimed to find out which group switched and mixed language the most. The transcripts of the chosen YouTube video were the collected data. The qualitative method was used in this study, and the data were analyzed using document analysis based on the framework of Myers-Scotton (1993) and Muysken (2000). The result showed that Group 1 used code-switching and code-mixing the most, with a total of 288 pieces of data. Group 2 used code-switching and code-mixing with a total of 262 pieces of data. The most dominant type of code-switching used by both groups was intra-sentential, a total of 154 pieces of data. The less dominant type of code-mixing used was insertion, a total of 253 pieces of data.

Abstract

This research dissects the shift of Javanese into Acehnese in Pulo Loih village, Pidie. The Javanese live in the Pulo Loih village they followed the transmigration program which was not extended by the government and then moved to Pulo Loih village. This community is the focus of the researchers to conduct research that includes factors shifting Javanese into Acehnese and patterns of language shifting. Qualitative descriptive is a method applied in this study to collect data from 12 participants (eight adults and four children). After analyzing it, it was revealed that Javanese language users have disappeared among children while parents still interact with Javanese. There two factors that the researchers found in this study, namely internal factors and external factors. As for internal factors, parents do not teach Javanese and never interact in Javanese with their children. External factors include safety factors, economic factors, and social factors. These factors have proven that the Javanese language shift into the Acehnese language happened in Pulo Loih village, Pidie. There were four patterns of language shift when interacting, namely monolingual, subordinate bilingual, equal bilingual, and monolingual interaction patterns. Three patterns of language shift occurred in Javanese parents in the first generation who arrived in Pulo Loih village. The pattern is monolingual, subordinate bilingual, and equal bilingual. In the third generation, Javanese children, they have lost the fourth patterns, and the patterns of language shift directly to the fifth language shift pattern is monolingual.
