Abstract

The construction of religious moderation is not only derived from the context of practices but also the texts of its theological doctrines. Manuscripts of Kitab Sifat Dua Puluh from West Kalimantan is a primary source to study the basis of Islamic religious moderation in Interior Borneo. The texts of the manuscript are no longer presented as a copy of al-Sanūsī’s Umm al-Barāhīn but it has become a corpus that accommodates local genius and tradition. This article aims to examine the moderation of Islamic theological doctrine derived from the texts of the manuscript of twenty attributes of God. The texts of a manuscript considered as one of the sustainable best practices of South-East Asian localisations of Islam because it was one of the basic references for the local Dayak Muslim community learning Islam in interior Boneo. This article is based on the results of philological studies on the manuscript collection written by Abang Ahmad Tahir (1860-1945) in Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan, Indonesia.  The moderate Islamic theological doctrine in Abang Ahmad Tahir’s manuscript collection can be seen through three indicators namely the simplicity of the narrative articulation and arguments of the attributes of God, the synthesis of Islamic theological doctrine with Sufi doctrine, and the content of the text that gives no room for hate speech against local tradition and different systems of belief of the indigenous offspring of West Kalimantan.

Abstract

Sunnatullah (Causality Law) as the basis of interpretation is intended to make its concept as a limitation (taqyîd) from the generality or absoluteness of the al-Qur'an and Hadith texts. For example, the texts that talk about the implementation of congregational prayers, Friday prayers, other worship suggestions related to the crowd, are restricted by the rules (sunnatullah) of social distancing taken from the understanding of other religious texts. The massive number of people who state they should not be afraid of Covid19 and should only fear Allah is evidence of the lack of use of the concept of sunnatullah as the basis for interpreting the Qur'an and Hadith. Qualitative research using field-library and ethnographic research methods find that it is necessary to understand religious texts coupled with an understanding of the social sciences and humanities, especially the concept of sunnatullah. This research is intended to contribute to proper comprehension in understanding the Qur'an and Hadith so that there will be no contradiction in its interpretation with social, economic, political and health realities.

Abstract

This article examines power struggle in the discourse of Islam Nusantara which becomes very popular in contemporary Indonesian Islam. The idea of Islam Nusantara is not different from Islam in general, but with distinctive charactericstics, such as tawâzun, i‘tidâl, and tawassut}. The proponents of this idea claim that their intellectual framework is based on the principle of maslah}ah mursalah, istih}sân, and ‘urf. Using critical discourse analysis, this article attempts to see the other side of Islam Nusantara discourse. This study is based on an assumption that language and discourse are not only an instrument to convey ideas, but also a means to construct social reality. Social activities are always related to and constructed by their social settings. This article argues that the discourse of Islam Nusantara emerges as a part of struggle for influence between mainstream Islamic movements, such as Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, and new transnational Islamic movements, such as Tarbiyah, Hizbut Tahrir, and Salafis. The use of the term Islam Nusantara is indeed the effort of mainstream Islamic movements to create the image of indigenous Islamic movements, different from the newly imported Islamic movements. However, the discourse of Islam Nusantara seems to be reductionist and monolithic in perceiving diverse realities of Islam in Nusantara.

Abstract

This study explores Quraish Shihab's interpretation of gender equality issues, such as equality in creation, marriage, prophethood, the role of women in the public world, and others. This research uses the library research method, and the first and primary source is Tafsir al-Misbah. Operationally, the researchers readvarious literature written by scholars, both East and West, on the concept of gender from the perspective of feminism. Then, the researchers read the Tafsir al-Misbah on the same theme. Does feminist thought influence Quraish Shihab's interpretation or not? This research finds that according to Quraish Shihab, the issue of gender equality in the Qur'an must be understood proportionally, unlike gender practitioners who interpret the Qur'an excessively and seem to impose their will. Quraish Shihab argues that men and women are naturally different both physically and psychologically. Both also have equality in terms of humanity and rights. Women have advantages that men do not have and vice versa. Both need each other. Keduanya saling membutuhkan.
