Abstract

Functioned as a social medium, tour commentaries are used by tour guides to interact and communicate with tourists, especially in explaining activities, locations, cultures, and knowledge regarding the place they are visiting. These commentaries bring interpersonal function that is realized through the use of modality. This current study, therefore, aims to (1) identify the use of modalities that bear the interpersonal function found in students’ tour commentaries and (2) describe the meaning of the modalities used. This study employed descriptive qualitative and text analysis methods using Halliday’s theory of modality. The data, 57 utterances containing modality, were obtained from tour commentaries of Tour and Travel Business Study Program’s students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung. This study reveals the use of both modalization, to show ’probability’ and ’usuality’, and modulation, to show ’obligation’ and ’inclination’, on students’ tour commentaries. The ’probability’ and ’obligation’ functions are most discovered. The results can be beneficial academically and practically. They can give insight into how tour guides apply modality in their tour commentaries.     Keywords: modality, modalization, modulation, tour commentaries

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) menjelaskan nilai yang terkandung dalam pilihan kata yang digunakan dalam wacana kampanye kesetaraan gender UN Women dan (2) menjelaskan representasi konsep kesetaraan gender yang dimanifestasikan melalui pilihan kata yang digunakan dalam wacana kampanye tersebut. Objek penelitian adalah wacana-wacana kampanye kesetaraan gender yang diperoleh dari situs resmi UN Women (www.unwomen.org). Ditemukan lima belas wacana yang memiliki muatan kesetaraan gender dan pemberdayaan perempuan. Wacana-wacana ini dianalisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan Analisis Wacana Kritis berdasarkan teori Fairclough sebagai dasar untuk menemukan nilai yang terkandung dalam pilihan kata yang digunakan. Selanjutnya, metode interpretasi diaplikasikan untuk melihat representasi konsep kesetaraan gender yang termanifestasi melalui pilihan-pilihan kata tersebut. Penelitian ini menghasilkan dua simpulan. Pertama, pilihan kata yang digunakan dalam wacana kampanye kesetaraan gender UN Women mengandung tiga nilai, yaitu nilai eksperiental, nilai ekspresif, dan nilai relasional. Kedua, berdasarkan interpretasi terhadap pilihan kata, diperoleh tiga representasi konsep kesetaraan gender. Representasi 1 yaitu kesetaraan gender dipandang sebagai sebuah kondisi ketika perempuan ditempatkan pada posisi yang setara dan diberi kesempatan yang sama dengan laki-laki. Representasi 2 yaitu kesetaraan gender dinilai dapat membawa perubahan bagi masa depan yang lebih baik. Representasi 3 yaitu kesetaraan gender merupakan tanggung jawab semua pihak.

Abstract

Making errors is an unavoidable part of learning a new language, especially for those who do not use that new language as their first medium of communication. Writing in a foreign language can be a considerably tough challenge for EFL learners, one of the problems is regarding the grammatical rules. This present study attempts to discover and analyze the grammatical errors found in EFL students’ final project writing. It employed a descriptive qualitative method using a textual analysis process by adopting the theory of Dulay et al regarding grammatical error analysis. (Dulay et al., 1982) classify grammatical errors into four; omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. Five students’ final projects with a total number of 2884 sentences became the object of this research. The final projects were taken from Politeknik Negeri Bandung (Polban) English Department graduates of 2018 and they were limited to the project of ‘Travel Writing’ only. Travel Writing was chosen due to the fact that it contains more various types of sentences, more complicated sentence structure, and higher level of language modification. The results of this study claim that all types of grammatical errors presented by Dulay et al are found in those five students’ final projects. Misformation is the most frequent error the students made in producing their travel writing products by 74% (380 out of 516 errors) while misordering is the least one by 1% (7 out of 516 errors). Theoretically, the findings can be a base for the next researchers to further analyze the cause of this error production. Meanwhile, practically the results can be used by curriculum makers as a guide to evaluate and develop new curriculum, syllabus, materials, and teaching methods which are more suitable for EFL students in order to communicate effectively and write skillfully. Abstract

The conjunction is known as one of the most challenging topics to acquire by EFL learners. Its close correlation with the ability of writing makes this topic imperative to master by English learners. The study intends to identify (1) the types of conjunction used by EFL learners in writing English texts, and (2) the combinations formed by using conjunction in writing English texts. Data was collected from the background part of final project reports of English Diploma-III students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung, Indonesia. It resulted in 213 uses of conjunctions to be further analyzed. This study employed the qualitative descriptive method to identify the type of conjunction used and the model of combinations formed. The results show that EFL learners have been able to use coordinate conjunction, subordinate conjunction, and correlative conjunction in writing English texts. The most conjunction used is the coordinate conjunction. Also, they have been able to form combinations of word-word, word-phrase, phrase-phrase, and clause-clause by using conjunctions in their English writings. These results may bring both theoretical and practical implications. First, theoretically, the findings can enrich the knowledge of English Grammar and Writing in general. Second, practically, the results may be beneficial for curriculum designers and lecturers as one of the evaluation resources to arrange more suitable materials for EFL learners, especially at the level of Diploma-III.      Keywords:  Conjunction; Final Project; Background; EFL Learners

Abstract

Karang Taruna sebagai sebuah organisasi potensial dan diharapkan menjadi potensi sumber kesejahteraan sosial, khususnya generasi muda yang dibentuk dari, oleh dan untuk masyarakat. Dalam menjalankan program kerja, Karang Taruna dapat bekerjasama dengan Pemerintah, Pemerintah Daerah Provinsi, Pemerintah Daerah Kabupaten/Kota, Kecamatan, Desa atau Kelurahan, Potensi Sumber Kesejahteraan Sosial, Badan Usaha atau Masyarakat. Untuk menjalin kerjasama, Karang Taruna harus mampu menuangkan konsep, ide dan gagasannya ke dalam sebuah proposal kolaborasi kerjasama disertai denga. Akan tetapi menulis proposal kolaborasi tidaklah mudah karena ada beberapa kaidah yang harus diperhatikan. Hal ini yang membuat pengurus Karang Taruna mengalami permasalahan dalam menulis proposal. Solusi yang dapat diberikan untuk mengatasi permasalahan yaitu melalui pelatihan dan pendampingan dalam penulisan proposal kolaborasi kerjasama. Kegiatan pelatihan dibagi menjadi tiga tahap: (1) perencanaan meliputi analisis kebutuhan mitra, (2) pelaksanaan meliputi pengelompokan kebutuhan mitra, penyusunan materi pelatihan, pelaksanaan pelatihan, dan (3) evaluasi meliputi evaluasi dan pelaporan hasil kegiatan. Hasil dari pelatihan ini adalah proposal kolaborasi yang dibuat oleh peserta selama pelatihan yang sudah sesuai dengan kaidah penulisan yang tepat sehingga proposal tersebut dapat dimanfaatkan masing-masing pengurus untuk menhalin kolaborasi dengan pihak ketiga.
