Abstract

This research analyzes sexually-assaulted child’s silent tendency as depicted in Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak. This social problem reflects one of social issues in America in 1999. I use sociology of literature theory from Alan Swingewood to analyze social issue in American society. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. I find that Laurie Halse Anderson depicts Melinda’s silent tendency is influenced by people around her. Sexually-assaulted child tends to not reporting the assault. It reflects sexual assault issue in America in 1999.

Abstract

Not only marginalize and discriminate big-size women, social contruction of ideal body has contribute to eating disorder and anorexia on women in America. Thus it triggers rejections of protest through all platforms and one of them is Julie Murphy’s Dumplin’. The purpose of this research is to reveal Julie Murphy’s worldview of fighting discrimination because of social construction in novel Dumplin’. Dumplin’ is chosen as the material object of this study. The formal object of this study is how the main character fight the social construction through its relation with other characters. Julie Murphy’s Dumplin’ is believed to express the social group world vision thus Lucien Goldmann genetic structuralism theory is used. Dialectical method is used to achieve the purpose of this study. The primary data are taken from Dumplin’ novel. The secondary data are taken from journals and books related to this study. The focus of the research are 1) analyzing the literary structure of the novel through the relations of its characters, 2) finding the genesis of the novel by analyzing the social structure, 3) the author’s (social group) worldvision in the novel. Therefore, the structure of the novel are analyzed through the characters relations and the genesis found as the social structure investigated and analyzed. The result of analysis shows that the author World View represents social groups fighting againsts body ideal construction such as NAAFA, The Fat Acceptance Movement and Body Positivity Movement that try to fight and modify the body ideal construction as dominant social construction that exists in society through her novel Dumplin’.

Abstract

This article is designed to offer comprehensive analyses of characterizations, plot, setting, intertextual relationships, and hypogram of Cerita Cinta Enrico, the folklore of Sangkuriang (Tangkuban Perahu), and the myth of Oedipus. Qualitative descriptive method is used along with intertextual approach. Based on the analysis of the data, the results are: (1) the three stories analyzed employ the main character as their title; (2) the three of them use the traditional plot and flashback; (3) all of them address Oedipus complex issue; (4) Sangkuriang (Tangkuban Perahu) and Oedipus are the hypograms of Cerita Cinta Enrico.

Abstract

Garnier is one of the most famous international beauty products among women in Indonesia. Founded in France, Garnier is specialized in beauty products such as hair care, skincare, and hair color products. Among all the skincare products, Garnier Light Complete Serum Cream is one of the top sales in Indonesia. This paper is intended to analyze beauty product advertisements from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) perspective. This study applied qualitative research by using purposive sampling. Garnier’s advertisement does not only convince customers to buy their products but also plant their standard of beauty on women. The advertisement also standardizes the real beauty. The primary data were taken from the advertisement of Garnier Light Complete Serum Cream of Chelsea Islan Edition. This analysis is based on Fairclough’s 3-dimensional model of discourse. Fairclough’s 3-dimensional model discourse focuses on the standardization of real beauty of women through Garnier advertisement. The results show that the advertisements standardize the real beauty of women by using several linguistic devices, semiotics, and strategies. At the end, the Garnier advertisement establishes their ideology of “real beauty” in society.

Abstract

MORFOLOGI KISAH Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis morfologi cerita rakyat Jambi Putri Pinang Masak. Ada berbagai versi Putri Pinang Masak yang dikenal di Riau, Jambi, dan Sumatera Selatan. Peneliti akan menggunakan versi Kisah Negeri Jambi yang telah didokumentasikan dalam bentuk tulisan oleh Amran Tasai. Fokus objek yang diteliti meliputi fungsi-fungsi pelaku, skema dan pola cerita, dan distribusi fungsi di kalangan pelaku. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui struktur cerita rakyat ini. Model analisis yang dikembangkan Vladimir Propp digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui studi pustaka dan analisis struktural naratologi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan ada sebelas fungsi yaitu Absentation (β), Delivery (ζ), The difficult task (M), Struggle (H), Fraud (ƞ), Return (↓), Villainy (Α), lack (a), Victory (I), Marking (J), dan The initial misfortune or lack is liquated (K). Fungsi terebut terdistribusi ke dalam tiga lingkaran tindakan, yaitu lingkaran aksi penjahat, aksi donor, dan aksi perantara. Kata kunci: morfologi, Kisah Negeri Jambi, Putri Pinang Masak, fungsi pelaku, Vladimir Propp, deskriptif kualitatif.Abstract: This study aims to analyze the morphology of Jambi’s folklore of Putri Pinang Masak. The story of Putri Pinang Masak varys in Riau, Jambi, and South Sumatera. However, the documented Kisah Negeri Jambi by Amran Tasai is selected. Narrative functions, schemes and the patterns of the story, and function distributions among characters are observed. This study is intended to find out the structure of the story. The Analysis’s model by Vladimir Propp is used to achieve the author’s target. This study uses qualitative approach of narratological analysis and literature studies. The result showed that there are eleven narrative functions which are Absentation (β), Delivery (ζ), The difficult task (M), Struggle (H), Fraud (ƞ), Return (↓), Villainy (Α), lack (a), Victory (I), Marking (J), dan The initial misfortune or lack is liquated (K). The narrative functions are distributed in three spheres of action which are villain action, donor action, and dispatcher action. Keywords: morphology, Kisah Negeri Jambi, Putri Pinang Masak, narrative functions, Vladimir Propp, descriptive qualitative.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the narrative structure of Pasambahan Kamatian as one of oral literature of the people of Lubuk Tarok. This study is also intended to observe social functions of Pasambahan Kamatian for Lubuk Tarok community. Theory of formula by Albert B. Lord is used. Data were collected in the form of recording, transcribed and described, then analyzed. The result showed the formulas and formulaic expression of Pasambahan Kamatian which are syntactic formula and repetition formula. The formula inherited through two ways, observation and special informal education. The sosial function of Pasambahan Kamatian is the function to honor their dead realtives or loved ones, the function of dakwah, social interaction to avoid individualism, and education of social values.

Abstract

This research examines the representation of spring in D. H. Lawrence's poetry entitled “Craving for Spring”. This representation of spring is examined through the lens of ecocriticism theory and the theory of ecological consciousness found by Bannan-Watts. This research is evaluated by applying qualitative method to examine the data. The main data of the research are in the form of sentences related to ecological consciousness portrayed in the poem. This research found there are three kinds of ecological consciousness in the poem: (1) Comprehending the fundamental nature of the environment, (2) Recognizing the interconnectedness of human and nature. (3) Concerning about the condition of the nature. The result of this research indicates a shift in the meaning of spring. In the past, spring was depicted as natural harmony due to the rebirth of new plants after winter. Today, the meaning of spring has shifted. Spring does not represent the natural beauty. Spring becomes a season that brings fear to the people due to the natural disasters that emerge during spring.
