Abstract

A mosque is an efficient tool for inhabitants to engage in diverse religious activities, contributing to its prosperity, filling it with diverse religious activities, and fostering Islamic brotherhood ties between locals. This study explores the religious transformation of urban populations in the East Pamulang neighborhood of South Tangerang. The purpose of this study is to determine the tendency of solid religiosity of residents in four mosques in housing complexes, including Bukit Pamulang Indah complex (Al-Muhajirin mosque), Pamulang Indah complex (Darussalam mosque), Pamulang Estate complex (AtTaqwa mosque), and Vila Inti Persada complex (Inti Iman mosque). This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological perspective, showing an exciting interaction between the Mosque Prosperity Council and the community, which have diverse understandings of religion, ethnicity, culture, and regional origin. The excellent relationship between the Mosque Prosperity Council and the locals has increased the religiosity of Muslims in East Pamulang. For locals, a mosque is a place of worship and a space to create unity and improve family ties, encouraging East Pamulang residents to become dependent on the mosque, emotionally attached to it, and devoted to its growth

Abstract

This article examines the “urang awak”, a term referring to the Minangnese who trace their origin to Minangkabau in West Sumatera , and their dakwah activism in diaspora. It problematises the relation of Islam activism and ethnic identity of a diasporic community in contemporary West-Java, Indonesia. It further argues that mosque has been central to the activities of dakwah activism of the urang awak in diaspora. As this article demonstrates, the Harakatul Jannah Mosque and Al-Anwar Mosque reserve as important bases for dakwah activism of urang awak in a dominant culture of Sundanese and Javanese. Through these mosques, the urang awak attempt to preserve their ethnic identity, mainly expressed through the mosques’ architecture, language, and religious activities that clearly symbolise the identity of urang awak.

Abstract

This study investigates the promotion of religious moderation in Pamulang, South Tangerang, through the revitalization of moderate Islam by Kiai. The research uses a qualitative phenomenological approach and attitude-behavior relationship theory to explore the role of Kiai in fostering religious harmony within the Muslim community and across religious groups in Pamulang's diverse society. Data was collected through literature reviews, documentation, interviews, observations, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). The findings indicate that Pamulang, while multi-ethnic and culturally diverse, is predominantly Muslim. The revitalization is led by ten charismatic kiai, two locals and eight immigrants, with strong educational backgrounds, both domestic and international, which grant them legitimacy as religious leaders. This revitalization has led to significant changes, with the community shifting from conflicts over religious differences to greater tolerance, attributed to the Kiai's efforts to promote moderate Islam.

Abstract

The decentralization of governmental administration during Indonesia's Reform Order era has facilitated educational autonomy, enabling Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to redefine their institutional frameworks. This study examines the transformation of pesantren in South Tangerang City within the context of educational autonomy. Using a qualitative methodology that combines historical and phenomenological approaches, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observations, literature reviews, and focus group discussions. The research identified seventy pesantren distributed across seven sub-districts, with a significant concentration in Ciputat. These pesantren have undergone substantial transformations, integrating traditional religious education, such as kitab studies, with modern schooling systems, including madrasas and formal educational institutions. Certain pesantren serve specific demographics, such as orphans and converts, while others focus on formal education or the practice of specific Islamic tariqah. The observed transformations encompass human resources, curricula, educational facilities, and management structures. These changes highlight pesantren's dual commitment to preserving their religious heritage while responding to contemporary societal needs, embodying the philosophy of holistic education (tafaqquh fi ilmi al-ukhrawy wa al-dunyawy). This study contributes to the discourse on educational autonomy by offering a comprehensive perspective on pesantren's evolving role in balancing tradition and modernity within a dynamic educational landscape.
