Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of hedonic and utilitarian shopping motives on generation Z's online repurchase intention. The study also aims at examining the interaction between consumers’ internal factor (that is, shopping motives) and external stimuli (i.e, product type) on online repurchase intention. This research uses a quantitative approach, namely explanatory research. The research was conducted on 143 respondents of generation Z in Indonesia. The data analysis technique used in this study is multiple regression with mediating variables and independent sample t-test. The results showed that: 1) Hedonic and utilitarian shopping motives positively affect online repurchase intention of generation Z, 2) Attitudes towards online shopping partially mediated the influenceof utlilitarian and hedonic shopping motives on online repurchase intention of generation Z, 3) Hedonic shopping motives’ influence on online repurchase intention of generation Z is higher than that of utilitarian motives if the product category is a hedonic product, and 4) Utilitarian shopping motives’ influence on online repurchase intention of generation Z is higher than that of hedonic motives if the product category is a utilitarian. The research provides important implications that consumers (especially Generation Z) have hedonic and utilitarian online shopping motives. Therefore, managers need to provide online shopping experience which can evoke both both hedonic and utilitarian shopping motives.

Abstract

Abstract The digital technology enhancement and the COVID-19 pandemic have fastened the growth of cross-border e-commerce. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior as the main framework, we study the effect of belief on the quality of e-website service, customer need for uniqueness, normative beliefs, subjective norms, self-efficacy, and perceived behavioral control on attitude and behavior intention to shop online across national borders. This research provides empirical evidence on Indonesian consumers' attitudes and behavior in cross-border online shopping. Based on 200 respondents’ responses, we analyzed the data employing Structural Equation Modeling and Mean-Difference tests. The results of this study reveal that the antecedents of e-website service quality have significant effects on attitudes which in turn affect cross-border online learning behavior intention, but not for consumer need for uniqueness. This study also shows that marketers should pay attention to the demograhic characteristics of consumers which results in differences in predictors and intention in cross-border online shopping. The research extends the Theory of Planned Behavior by adding consumers characteristics in the context of cross-border online shopping. Global e-business companies need to study antecedents in understanding the complexity of Indonesian consumer online shopping behavior across national borders.

Abstract

Objective: The objective of the study is to analyze the factors that shape tourists' environmentally responsible behavior. The proposed research model integrates norm activation theory, stakeholder theory, and a utilitarian perspective. From the norm activation theory perspective, two variables, namely awareness of consequences and ascribed responsibility, are included in the model as antecedents of personal norms. Destination social responsibility, as a stakeholder effort to promote environmental protection, can strengthen the influence of personal norms on environmentally responsible behavior. Furthermore, the utilitarian perspective in the form of perceived value, which is the benefit that tourists obtain from traveling to a destination, is also a moderating influence of personal norms on environmentally responsible behavior. Methodology: This study involved 255 respondents who had visited Yogyakarta. Data were processed using Smart-PLS to determine the relationships between variables. Finding: The results show that awareness of consequences and ascribed responsibility are factors in forming personal norms. Personal norms have a positive influence on environmentally responsible behavior. Furthermore, the data supported the role of perceived value as a moderator. However, destination social responsibility does not moderate the influence of personal norms on environmentally responsible behavior. Conclusion: The study concludes that the norms activation theory holds that personal norms are antecedents to environmentally responsible behavior. Personal norms’s influence on environmentally responsible behavior is strengthened by perceived value.
