Abstract

In Indonesia, female migrant domestic workers’ representations tend to contain negative meanings. Although they are named as “heroes of development”, but their position is nothing more than a commodity for the country. Such treatment makes female migrant domestic workers becomes vulnerable to violence and exploitation by employers, agents, andgovernment staff. Nevertheless, there is an alternative narrative that is rarely highlighted in literature or media, namely the representation of female migrant domestic workers as powerful actors. This paper seeks to fill in that alternative narrative by highlighting the agencies did by these six female migrant domestic workers. The author believes that by using the standpoint feminism perspective to analyze the struggle of these six female migrant domestic workers in empowering themselves after the oppression, it can be seen that agency has been manifested by female migrant domestic workers during the migration process. This study reveals the efforts of female migrant domestic workers to manifest their empowerment through migration decisions in the middle of patriarchal structures, their ability to resist structures with activism, and become agents of development and change for their communities.

Abstract

Kata-kata kunci: Nasionalisme Indonesia, Nasionalisme Papua, Benedict Anderson, Nasionalisme, identitasViolence, discrimination and racism have remained to be major issues faced by Papuans ever since the independence of Indonesia and the inclusion of Papua in Indonesia’s territory until today. This phenomenon can be seen through various aspects. One of those is the determinant aspect of a country’s existence: nationalism. Within the framework of the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia, the existence of Papuan nationalism is undeniably still present and alive, even though Indonesian nationalism is the central one in maintaining the pillars of the Indonesian nation and state. This article discusses how Indonesian nationalism positions Papuan people, and vice versa. Furthermore, this article questions whether the Papuan identity is a part of Indonesia’s. The discussion of this article focuses on the developing nationalism discourse, in the hope to overcome the ‘double-nationalism’ in Indonesia when it comes to Papua’s issue, by using Benedict Anderson’s concept of nationalism. Finally, this article addresses a crucial question, which is how to develop the Papuan idea within the framework of Indonesian nationalism. Keywords: Indonesian Nationalism, Papuan Nationalism, Benedict Anderson, Nationalism, identity

Abstract

Diaspora is commonly used term. Its discursive nature makes diaspora means everything, adjusted to whoever articulates it. The idea of Indonesian diaspora has been spread since 2012. Diaspora is articulated by non-state actors, the expatriate group. This group change the perception of the state against expatriates from traitors to state assets. State and non-state actors aim to maximize capital through skills, remittance and investment. This is confirmed in The Presidential Decree No. 76 Year 2017 on Facilities for Indonesian Society Abroad. We argue that the Indonesian diaspora is a discourse articulated by interest groups and supported by the state to maximize capital. Whereas diaspora is a continuously created, transformed and maintained metaphor to redefine identity of a nation. This article analyzes power relations within Indonesian diaspora discourse and also review the concept of national identity in IR which commonly use state-centric perspective that seen state as unitary and sovereign entity. Keywords: constructivism, discourse analysis, diaspora Indonesia, nation-state, national identityAbstrakDiaspora merupakan istilah yang umum digunakan.

Abstract

This article aims to see how the diasporas’ nationalist ideas are manifested in the homelands’ conflict through a comparative case study of the Armenian and Azerbaijani diasporic nationalism in the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict. Factors affecting the efficacy of diasporic activity from Shain & Barth (2003) is used as the conceptual framework within which the comparison is conducted. The result of this case study indicates that the manifestation of Armenian diasporic nationalism tends to be radical while Azerbaijani diasporic nationalism tends to be moderate. In conclusion, this case study finds that there are various aspects other than nationalism that influence the dynamics of diaspora activism and need deeper investigation, for example by integrating approaches that are sensitive to the experiences of marginalized groups such as feminism and postcolonialism in the diaspora studies. Keywords: diaspora, diasporic nationalism, international relations

Abstract

This article aimed to examine the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), focusing on the rights of the Indigenous Papuan people in the Indonesian provinces on the western half of the island of New Guinea, commonly referred to in English as Papua or West Papua. By drawing on the theory of norm diffusion in the study of international relations, this article argues that despite adopting a declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples, the Indonesian government seems to find fulfilling the rights of Indigenous Papuans challenging due to obfuscation and lack of political will. This article finds that the implementation of special autonomy in Papua has been a failure, as the human rights situation has deteriorated and the fundamental rights of Indigenous Papuans remain unfulfilled.

Abstract

Civil society organisations or CSOs are unique compared to other groups. They help advocate the society by mentoring, raising public awareness, and campaigning values to improve the quality of understanding the public issues. By analyzing the rejection of the death penalty, this study examines the role of KontraS and Imparsial as norm entrepreneurs in human rights campaigns. Both view the death penalty as incompatible with the universal human rights norm, and the government should comprehensively pay greater attention to this issue. With this belief as a rationale, KontraS and Imparsial are motivated to promote the rejection of the penalty as depicted in their campaigns. The two organizations conduct malicious actions like criticism, demonstration, and collaborative strategies such as research, education, and community empowerment in human rights campaigns. This paper is qualitative research using an intensive literature review combined with in-depth interviews. The findings revealed that both succeeded in overspreading counter norms to create political debates regarding death punishment. However, due to the coalition’s socio-political dynamics and internal factors, KontraS and Imparsial failed to influence the actors and state policies to abolish the capital penalty.

Abstract

AbstractBoth state and non-state actors need the power to influence others to achieve their desired goals. Soft power isoften used by state or non-state actors to attracts the attention of others without using coercive actions to achievethe desired goals. This strategy has been widely used in various cases, including in the issue of China and Taiwan, especially in the "Taiwan Flag" incident involving Tzuyu, a K-Pop artist who declared herself a Taiwanese andcarried the Taiwan flag on a South Korean television program. This incident was later brought up by Tsai Ingwen, a politician from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to cooperate with the Taiwanese people against Chinain the 2016 Taiwan Presidential Election. This article will discuss how Tsai Ing-wen and the people of Taiwan usedKorean wave as a soft power strategy in the 2016 Taiwan Presidential Election to “fight” against China. Thosegave positive results due to the similarity of political values believed by Taiwan and carried by the Korean wave,as well as the goals shared by Tsai Ing-wen and people of Taiwan, thereby defeated the pro-China Kuomintang(KMT) party in the election. Keywords: Soft Power, Taiwan, China, Korean Wave, Taiwan Presidential Election 2016, Taiwan Flag IncidentAbstrakBaik aktor negara maupun non-negara memerlukan kekuatan untuk mempengaruhi pihak lain agar tujuan yangdiinginkan dapat tercapai. Abstract

International relations as an academic field of study has a reputation for being masculine, violent, aggressive, or even brutal because of its focus on power projections and the state as the main actor. His academic and practical discussions rarely discuss issues related to other matters outside of defense, military, and state power, such as issues of gender equality or social welfare that have international and transnational dimensions. This paper criticizes the conception of masculinity which has been the heart of various schools of thought in international relations through the lens of feminism. This paper will explore more deeply the approaches and main ideas in the concept of masculinity and international relations, by focusing on the ideas promoted by the realism and constructivism paradigms. These ideas will then be contested with the concepts narrated by feminists in international relations. After reviewing the masculinity approach, this paper will also attempt to map the consensus between the feminist approach and the traditional notion of international relations regarding the concept of masculinity.
