Abstract

The lack of students’ activities seems to be the main reasons why the teacher failed to maximize the participation of the students in a senior high school in a small city in East Java Indonesia. The unification of two different basic competences into one lesson plan also makes the indicator of the lesson plan become not too clear and not specific enough. Thus the research questions of this study are: 1. How is the implementation of the teaching and learning process based on the revised lesson plan conducted by the teacher? 2. How is the teaching and learning process based on the revised lesson plan followed by the students? 3. How is the students’ participation in learning speaking after the teaching and learning process based on the revised lesson plan conducted? This research is a classroom action research with one cycle only. The first data is in the form of description of the teacher’s activities during the teaching and learning process, the source of the data is the teacher who conducts the revised teaching-learning process. The second data is the description of students’ activities during the teaching and learning process, the source of the second data is the students who follow the teaching and learning process based on the revised lesson plan. The third data is the participation of the students when they are taught using the revised lesson plan, the third source of the data is also the students who follow the teaching and learning process based on the revised lesson plan. Abstract

This community service activity stems from the lack of use of technology in the use of teaching media in several schools in Loei Province, Thailand. Educators tend to apply conventional media which ultimately gives the effect of boredom and decreased motivation to students. The role of teaching media is very important in the learning process of students, especially at the elementary school level where students tend to be active in moving and get bored quickly. Pre-surveys and interviews with schools and teachers that have been conducted show that students are more interested in learning activities by using technology-based teaching media. The use of technology or IT is not optimal in schools even though the school has been equipped with technological facilities such as laptops, computers, projectors and projector screens. The support from the principal and guardians of students for mastery of technology in teaching is very large, but due to the lack of information and knowledge about technology such as the application of teaching media, conventional techniques are always applied in every lesson. Armed with this problem, the service team offers a solution for assisting the creation of information and technology-based teaching media for English teachers in Loei Province, Thailand through several stages, namely 1. Introduction and strengthening of materials through socialization; 2. Assistance in making teaching media; 3. Monitoring of Media Implementation. The outputs that will be produced from this program are scientific publications in national journals with an unaccredited ISSN, publications in print and online mass media, increasing competitiveness (improvement of quality), and improving community values (education). The additional outputs of this service activity are scientific publications in international journals, CD ROMs and tutorial books with ISSBN.

Abstract

Corrective feedback is crucial for students to improve their speaking skill. The feedback is as important as the way of delivering it to students. Lecturers need to acknowledge students’ preferences on corrective feedback, so it will be useful for students’ speaking improvement. This study aims at investigating (1) the amount of corrective feedback that students think most useful and its reason, (2) types of corrective feedback that students think most useful and its reason. This study utilizes mixed method. Both close-ended and open-ended questionnaire are used to gain the data. The result shows that students need the lecturer to mark all their errors during speaking. When lecturer marks all their error, they will remember the correction and will never repeat the same mistake in the future. Furthermore, students also need the lecturer to mark their mistakes every time they make it to avoid them making the same mistake on the other occasion. In this study, most students prefer explicit correction as the useful way that can be done by lecturer to deliver the corrective feedback. Students need lecturer to do that way to give feedback in term of grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary or word choice. Explicit correction is saving time since it does not need further explanation why a certain word’s choice, word’s pronunciation or grammar is incorrect. It is also efficient because lecturer does not need to wait for students to think about or to guess the right form of certain word’s choice, word’s pronunciation or grammar. Keywords: Oral Corrective, Feedback, Students’ Preference, Speaking Skill
