Abstract

Global market provides opportunities for business owners to grow their business. However, to what extent farmers – as one of business owners – take benefits from the global markers remains unclear. This paper aims to investigate the impact of entrepreneurial orientation on farmers’ involvement in global supply chain, in turn on farm performance. The data were gathered from a survey of 320 samples of vegetable farmers in three regions in West Java, Indonesia. Using PLS analysis, our findings demonstrate that farmers with higher entrepreneurial orientation (reflected by dimensions of innovativeness, proactiveness, risk taking, competitive aggressiveness, and autonomy), involve more in global supply chain, and gain higher farm performance. Ultimately, the more farmers involve in global supply chain, the higher their farm performance. Our findings provide an empirical support for the impact of entrepreneurial orientation on enabling farmers’ ability to involve in broader supply chains beyond the domestic ones. As a consequence, farmers enjoy better farm performance.

Abstract

Background: Women entrepreneurship is emerging as a significant catalyst for sustainable development and economic growth in urban and rural areas in Indonesia. Empirical evidence suggests that women entrepreneurs having rich social capital and strong entrepreneurial orientation tend to achieve positive business performance.Purpose: This paper investigates the impact of social capital and entrepreneurial orientation on the business performance of women entrepreneurs in Bogor.Design/methodology/approach: A survey was administered to a sample of 136 women-led enterprises in Bogor. The independent variable of social capital was operationalized as trust, norms, and networking, while entrepreneurial orientation was assessed in terms of innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking. Profitability indicating business performance served as the dependent variable. Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis was performed to test the hypothesized subsequent relationships between the variables.Findings/result: This paper reveals that social capital significantly enhances entrepreneurial orientation (t-stat = 7.192, p < 0.01), and entrepreneurial orientation positively impacts the business performance of women-led enterprises (t-stat = 4.857, p < 0.01). Furthermore, entrepreneurial orientation mediates the relationship between social capital and business performance, as indicated by a significant indirect effect (t-stat = 3.442, p < 0.01).Conclusion: This paper proves the importance of social capital (namely norms, trust, and networking) and entrepreneurial orientation (including risk-taking, proactiveness, and innovativeness) to enhance the profitability of women-led firms. Enhancing social capital can be encouraged through family support, networks, business community engagement, and stakeholder policies in improving entrepreneurial orientation in women, leading to improved business performance and economic growth in Bogor.Originality/value (State of the art): This paper contributes to a better understanding how business performance of women entrepreneurs is influenced by subsequent relationships of social capital and entrepreneurial orientation, including the mediating role of entrepreneurial orientation. Keywords: business performance, entrepreneurial orientation, social capital, small and medium enterprises, women entrepreneurship

Abstract

The world population is aging and almost every country in the world, including Indonesia, is experiencing growth in the number and proportion of older people in its population. Entrepreneurship research on retiree candidates can contribute to knowledge and efforts to deal with the aging population problem. Entrepreneurial self-efficacy and motivation are estimated to have a relation with older entrepreneurs' entrepreneurial decisions. The study aimed to analyze the correlation between self-efficacy and entrepreneurial motivation of prospective retirees of oil palm plantation companies. Data were obtained from a survey of palm oil company employees who will retire in 2024 to 2028, with a total sample of 119 respondents. Then the data were analyzed with Spearman Rank correlation analysis by STATA. The research findings show that entrepreneurial self-efficacy and motivation of retiree candidates are in the moderate category. The correlation test results show that self-efficacy is positively and strongly correlated with entrepreneurial motivation. This study suggests that companies prepare employees who will retire with training containing self-efficacy strengthening material because strong self-efficacy will motivate company employees who will retire to do entrepreneurship in retirement.

Abstract

Entrepreneurial resilience in farmers is their ability to adapt to risks, learn, and recover from failures to maintain or enhance farm performance. Entrepreneurial resilience among vegetable farmers impacts agricultural sustainability, ensuring they continue farming and meet vegetable demand. This study aims to analyze the level of entrepreneurial resilience among vegetable farmers in Desa Baturiti and examine the role of learning and innovation in mediating the influence of entrepreneurial resilience on farm performance. Data collection was conducted through a survey of vegetable farmers in Desa Baturiti, Bali Province, using a cluster sampling technique. A total of 60 farmers participated as respondents. The results indicate that the entrepreneurial resilience level of vegetable farmers in Desa Baturiti is high, with a score of 39.86. This high level of resilience enables farmers to continue their farming activities despite past failures and adapt to changes. Hypothesis testing reveals that the roles of entrepreneurial learning and innovation in mediating the influence of resilience on farm performance are not significant, resulting in the hypotheses not being confirmed. However, in terms of mediation effects, entrepreneurial learning has a medium mediation influence, while innovation has a low mediation influence on the relationship between entrepreneurial resilience and vegetable farm performance.

Abstract

Background: Coffee farmers in Tanggamus, Lampung, operate small-scale farms with limited access to physical and non-physical resources, which can affect their farming performance. However, coffee productivity in Tanggamus is higher than the national average. Factors intrinsic to the farmers themselves are believed to be the main drivers of this enhanced farm performance. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effect of entrepreneurial competence, specifically the ability to identify opportunities, pursue opportunities, and build networks, on the performance of coffee farming in Tanggamus. Design/methodology/approach: The sample for this study was determined using a multistage random sampling method, resulting in a total sample size of 124. The analytical methods used were descriptive and PLS-SEM analyses. Findings/Result: The study's findings indicate that the ability to identify opportunities has a significant effect on the performance of coffee farming, while the abilities to pursue opportunities and build networks do not significantly impact farm performance in Tanggamus. Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of entrepreneurial competence in small-scale farming with limited resources. To improve coffee farming performance in Tanggamus Regency, farmers must be able to effectively identify opportunities.Originality/value (State of the art): This study contributes to the literature on entrepreneurship among small-scale farmers in rural areas with limited resources. It examines the impact of farmers' internal entrepreneurial competence on the performance of their farming enterprises. Keywords: identify opportunities, networking, pursue opportunities, small-scale farm, coffee farmer
