Abstract

The head loss analysis in this study is focused on the existing piping system at the Ibnu Abbas Tarakan Tahfizhul Qur'an Islamic Boarding School, so that it is known that the flow losses that occur are both major losses and minor losses. The stages taken are; literature review by reviewing several previous studies then continued with data collection on the piping system in Ibnu Abbas Tarakan Islamic Boarding School. The discussion of head losses in the piping system is divided into four parts according to the existing branching of the pipe installation when the water comes out of the pump. Head losses in each section, namely; the first section (A) 0.21 m, the second section (B) 0.47 m, the third section (C) 0.3 m. Whereas in the fourth section, the existing pipe installation is not supplied by water when the water flow from the pump is distributed simultaneously in the four existing pipe branches. The pump is unable to serve the existing pipe installation, if it is flowed simultaneously.

Abstract

Abstract

Savonius turbines are among the types of turbines that can be used at low wind speeds. The variations in the number of savonius turbine blades are two blades, three blades, and four blades. The three-blade savonius turbine performs better at producing rotational speed than the two and four blades. The dimensions and construction are simple and cheap and easy maintenance of this turbine can be developed and used by the community. In this study, the addition of wind directors and wind speed on the three-blade savonius turbine were observed to determine their effect on the electrical energy produced. Observations in this study were carried out by using the experimental method. At a wind speed of 5 m/s, the prototype three-blade savonius wind turbine produces a 2 Volt electric voltage. Meanwhile, when using a wind direction, a 2 Volt electric voltage is obtained at a wind speed of 4.5 m/s, so that the addition of a wind direction to the three-blade savonius wind turbine prototype can increase the electrical energy produced. In addition, variations in the wind direction angle to the direction of the wind also affect the resulting electrical voltage. In the variation of angles of 15, 20, 25, 30 degrees, the angle of 20 degrees is obtained which produces the maximum electric voltage for each air velocity of 1.8 m/s to 4 m/s.

Abstract

Abstract

Improving the thermal efficiency of biomass cookstoves remains essential for enhancing energy utilization and reducing fuel consumption in household applications. This study investigates the effect of geometric size reduction on the thermal performance of a galvanized steel biomass stove equipped with a 12 V DC blower. The original biomass stove constructed from galvanized steel plates with dimensions of 50 × 50 × 55 cm³ equipped with a 12 V DC blower was developed in 2022. Due to its relatively large size, the air–fuel mixture delivered to the combustion chamber was not fully optimized, resulting in a thermal efficiency of only 10%. To address this limitation, the stove dimensions were reduced to 40 × 40 × 40 cm³. The performance evaluation was conducted using the Water Boiling Test (WBT) method with two water volumes (2 L and 5 L) and three fuel masses (40%, 60%, and 80%). The results indicate that reducing the stove dimensions contributes to a significant improvement in thermal efficiency, reaching up to 14.6%.

Abstract

The application of coconut coir in polymer composites is often restricted by poor interfacial adhesion due to the fiber’s hydrophilic nature. This study investigates the enhancement of tensile strength in coconut coir–epoxy composites via microwave-induced liquid plasma treatment with an electrolyte medium. The experiment employed a randomized design with four fiber treatment groups: untreated (control), plasma-treated in distilled water, plasma-treated in 10% NaCl, and plasma-treated in 10% NaOH. The plasma process was conducted at 400 W for 5 minutes under vacuum conditions (60–70 cmHg). Tensile test results indicate that the electrolyte medium significantly influences the treatment effectiveness. Plasma treatment in a 10% NaOH medium achieved the highest average tensile strength (5.70 MPa), corresponding to a 9.2% improvement over untreated fibers. In contrast, plasma treatment in distilled water resulted in a 21.6% reduction in tensile strength (4.08 MPa). The observed enhancement in the alkaline medium is likely related to combined chemical and physical effects induced by the plasma environment, which may contribute to improved fiber–matrix mechanical interlocking. These findings demonstrate that selecting a conductive, alkaline electrolyte medium is critical for optimizing liquid plasma treatment of natural fibers for composite applications.

Abstract

Laboratory-scale wave tanks are widely used to investigate surface wave behavior using different types of wavemakers, including flap and piston configurations. Previous studies by the authors showed that a simple transmission mechanism for a piston wavemaker produced unstable piston motion, resulting in variations in wave height and wavelength. This study designed and experimentally evaluated a crankshaft transmission system to drive a piston-type wavemaker and obtain more controlled piston motion. The experimental evaluation included mechanical performance analysis in terms of generated force and torque and measurement of wave characteristics at different distances from the wave source. The crankshaft system generated a force of 12.11 N and a torque of 0.24 Nm. The generated waves had average heights of 0.033, 0.029, and 0.027 m at distances of 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9 m, respectively, while the average wavelengths were 0.346, 0.350, and 0.334 m. The decrease in wave height with distance indicates wave energy attenuation during propagation. Compared with the previous piston wavemaker using a simple transmission system, the crankshaft system increased average wave height by 63.02% and average wavelength by 104.34%. The results indicate that the crankshaft transmission provides a more consistent piston motion and wave generation for laboratory-scale wave tank applications.
