Abstract

This study is aimed at (1) generating the all possible deep structure and (2) describing what type of transformation applied to the selected newspaper headlines. This is a qualitative research since it involves analyzing and interpreting the selected newspaper headlines. The analysis in this study is thus interpretive rather than statistical. Purposive sampling is used in this study since the selected newspaper headlines published by ‘The Jakarta Post’ in the period of May 4 – July 1, 2013 are suited to the intent of the study. The findings show deletion transformation is frequently applied to them. Every single headline contains of words deletion making them ungrammatical. The headline writer applies this type of transformational process in order to attract the readers’ attention so that they are curious to know the contents of the whole story. To conclude, applying TGG analysis can provide an adequate explanation about how the deep structures of the selected newspaper headlines are generated into their surface structure. Abstract

Abstract

A growing body of literature on need analysis research has been carried out in indifference areas in various countries around the world. However, need analysis study in Indonesian vocational settings situated in marketing programs is still in its infancy. This article aimed at exploring participants’ angles toward the participants’ ESP Target Needs in the marketing program at a private Vocational High School (VHS) in East Java, Indonesia. By adapting Hutchinson & Waters' (1987) frameworks, this sequential explanatory mixed-methods (Creswell, 2014, 2018) employed a web-based questionnaire and a series of semi-structured interviews as the instruments. A web-based questionnaire consisting of 9 items: 2 items asking about wants, 2 items asking about necessities, and 5 items asking about lacks was administered to 15 participants who consented to take part in the recent study. Additionally, there were 3 areas of a series of semi-structured interviews exploring participants’ and the English teachers’ feelings about their wants, necessities, and lacks. A descriptive statistical method using SPSS v.25 was used to analyze the quantitative data, whereas thematic analysis proposed by Widodo (2014) was employed to analyze the qualitative data. The findings indicated that there were various perceptions related to their English target needs. Conclusions, limitations, and recommendations were then discussed. Keywords: English specific purposes (ESP); marketing program; need analysis; target needs; vocational high school (VHS)

Abstract

Many academic works of literature have acknowledged Google Classroom (henceforth, GC) in assisting pedagogical practices, particularly for virtual classroom instructions. Yet, there has been limited research about GC investigating participants' views about GC-mediated instructions in an EFL setting. This study investigated Indonesian undergraduate students' perceptions of GC integration in the EFL context. This sequential explanatory mixed-methods aimed to investigate the undergraduate students' views about GC utilization in the EFL domain. Six participants from a private university in Jember, Indonesia, were voluntarily involved in this study. Data were collected through a web-based questionnaire and a series of semi-structured interviews to get in-depth information with respect to their opinions related to GC integration in such a context. The findings report that GC has been recognized for its ease of use, being easily accessible, promoting teacher-student interactions, and creating a more interactive online learning atmosphere. The study concluded with the proposition that the majority of participants were affirmative in accepting GC in their virtual classroom. The analysis also revealed implications for both EFL teachers and students. Limitations and recommendations were then provided.

Abstract

Now, EFL pedagogical practices have gradually transformed from traditional classrooms into digital learning. Within this context, mobile devices have now been considered as an auspicious medium for future learning. This study investigated how EFL instructors from different secondary education institutions viewed the in-class use of Kahoot in English-language classrooms. To this end, they were invited to fill a 13-items web-based questionnaire covering several categories: factual, behavioral, and attitudinal. Twenty-seven (n=27) Indonesian EFL instructors in secondary education at both public and private high schools mostly located in East Java, Indonesia, voluntarily participated in this present study by completing the online survey. The results indicated that participants mostly demonstrated positive feelings toward the utilization of Kahoot in EFL classrooms. It showed that Kahoot was perceived as a promising software application to enhance the English-language learning process. To explore the effectiveness of this online game-based platform, more future-related research with large-scale participants in broader geographic regions should be carried out in this area.
