Abstract

This qualitative interview study (Kvale, 2007) aims to explore students’ perceptions about the integration of Edmodo into an Indonesian EFL writing classroom. Three participants enrolled in the Advanced Paragraph Writing course at one of the private universities in the East Java Province, Indonesia, voluntarily involved in the current study. Drawing upon semi-structured interviews,  the thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) showcased that the participants felt so comfortable with Edmodo as a learning management system (LMS) integrated into their classroom. Not surprisingly, they recommended this app to be incorporated into their classroom in the future as a complement to the traditional face-to-face classroom. Finally, we drew conclusions, limitations, practical implications, and recommendations.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the difficulties of linguistic aspects in writing descriptive paragraph experienced by undergraduate students at English Education Program of UIJ. It used descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects were 20 students of English Education Program at second semester. They were instructed to write 100 – 150 words about descriptive paragraph entitled “A Description of My Village”. After investigating students’ writing product, the result of the research revealed that the students faced some difficulties in linguistic aspects. The most common difficulties of linguistic aspects made by the students were vocabulary problems (21,5%). Secondly, a cognitive problem was capitalization (20,5%), then fragments (16%) as a sentence structure problem, punctuation (14%) as a cognitive problem, spelling (6%) as a cognitive problem, preposition (5,5%) as a grammatical problem, word order and SVA (5%) as sentence structure problems. In addition, the follow-up interview supported these findings by indicating that most students was still assisted by looking up the dictionary in determining appropriate vocabularies. It was suggested that provide specific descriptions of linguistic aspects in writing skill be designed by the writing’s lecturers to improve students’ writing.

Abstract

The development of education world not only supported by the factors of teaching such as teaching methods, learning process and others but also influenced by the factors which doesn’t related with the teaching process at the class that is evaluation of learning. The writer conducted observation in Eight grade at MTs Bustanul Ulum Kasiyan Timur. The objectives of this research are to describe the characteristics of the item of teacher made test for English subject for Eight grade in MTs Bustanul Ulum Kasiyan Timur – Puger in the 2014/2015 Academic Year on daily test 1, daily test 2 and daily test 3 which are include validity and reliability. Type of this research is descriptive research with analyzing the item of question, reviewed from its content validity based on the syllabus and reviewed from theirs face and construct validity based on the question made by teacher an reviewed its criterion-related validity based on the answer of the students at MTs Bustanul Ulum. Based on the data analysis which is done, so it can be concluded that on generally the item of the teacher made test on daily test 1, 2 and 3 has not fulfill the criteria of content validity. From face validity on daily tests 1, 2 and 3 the teacher using layout well. On construct validity, the teacher using different skill to make the question between daily test 1, 2 and 3. And from Criterion-related validity on daily tests 1, 2 and 3 has not fulfill standard of KKM. And for reliability has not reliable because on daily test 2 and 3 have low reliability.

Abstract

Gender issue has become a topic of numerous studies in educational field. However, the availability of texbooks that representing gender equality are still limited. Thus urges textbook designers become aware in accomodating gender equality in EFL textbook. To fill this gap, the present study aims to investigate gender equality in Indonesian EFL textbook mandated for Junior High School grade IX. Adopting content analysis as research design, the content of textbook including multimodal texts, verbal and visual texts were analyzed by researcher. Gender neutral vocabularies, a balance proposition male and female vocabularies, the frequency of male’s and female’s visibility throughout images in the textbook were found to construct gender equality represented in the textbook. The finding show that the textbook designers are aware to minimize gender inequality represented in EFL textbook. Finally the implication of present study is English teacher and textbook designers should be fully aware and pay attention more about gender equality depicted in EFL textbook.

Abstract

This research investigates the vocational school students’ needs on the implementation of English teaching and learning that is focused on the target needs and learning needs. By adapting Hutchinson and Waters’ model (1987), questionnaire consisting of parts A and B was administered to 32 students. Part A deals with the target needs centred on the learner’s necessities, lacks and wants that are effectively functioned in the target situation. In contrast, part B concerns about learning needs that encompass learning inputs, procedures, teacher’s and learners’ role, and setting. Additionally, interviews were also conducted with the students and an English teacher to gather data in order to examine in-depth results of the practices of English teaching and to uncover possible areas of students’ language difficulties in learning English. The results suggested that the students have different perceptions of their necessities, wants, and lacks. The findings also demonstrated the students’ learning needs including the learning inputs, teaching-learning procedures, the teacher’s and learners’ role, as well as the teachinglearning settings.

Abstract

This study is an endeavor to depict undergraduate students’ perception of a digital game-based learning (DGBL) platform called Kahoot! integrated into the undergraduate students’ learning. To this end, a sequential explanatory study was employed. Undergraduate students from a private university in Indonesia (N=21) agreed to participate in this study. A web-based five-point Likert scale questionnaire was developed to examine their perceptions of this platform. A focus-group interview was also conducted to detect their in-depth feelings. The results indicated that they positively appreciated the integration of this tool into classroom instructions. Implications, conclusion and limitations were then discussed.
