Abstract

English is a language that is generally difficult to understand for most students. Providing reading materials is one of the necessary approaches that should be undertaken by professors. This research aims to explore information regarding the needs of students in learning English and describe how reading materials for law students at a university in Indonesia are designed. The research and development (R&D) method is employed, implementing the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The results indicate that the majority of students greatly require materials that can enhance their reading skills. After the reading materials are designed and implemented in class, an evaluation is conducted to further develop the materials. The evaluation results, as responded to by students and expert professors, indicate that the materials align with the students’ needs. The average percentage of students’ needs fulfilled by the reading materials is 84%, while the average assessment percentage from the experts is 90.4%. This demonstrates that the reading materials are valid for use as English learning materials for law students.

Abstract

This paper aims to provide information that pragmatic strategies is needed to offer university campaign. It is related to applied linguistics that make brand of universities known by many people. There are theory namely Ethos, Pathos and Logos that need to implement advertiser to make attention and awareness of the target audience. The results of this research can also help stakeholders determine the promotion and branding strategy of the institution such as higher education. A great university may not be known to many people, or it may only be known by certain people. Small universities could be even worse. This research is a marketing trial using google ads to increase the number of new student registrants at a State Islamic University (UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta). Promotion technique is adopted the Aristotle’s rhetoric namely trend consideration (Ethos), fundamental consideration (Pathos) and technical consideration (logos). All of these techniques use a pragmatic strategy approach where the advertiser does not invite the target audience directly, but the university and the target audience are brought together based on core of supply and demand. If compared to the previous year, there will be a 41% increase in registrants in 2021. This strategy has a significant impact and is very influential. A metadata analysis was chosen because this research studied deeply three sources of statistical data including keywords trends, enrolment statistics and a campaign statistic.

Abstract

This service is based on the urgent need to address the decline in the number of young farmers in Indonesia, which if left unchecked could threaten national food security. This study aims to explore more deeply the potential of Islamic boarding schools in forming agropreneur generations. By using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method which includes five cycles: knowing, understanding, planning, acting, and changing, this study successfully mapped the potential of Islamic boarding schools. After understanding the potential, an agropreneur education and training program for vegetable and fruit cultivation was implemented. The researchers collaborated with the Wonogiri Agriculture Service as a partner in this study. The subjects of the study included stakeholders of Muhammadiyah Green School Wonogiri, including leaders, religious teachers (Asatiz), and students (Santri). The results of the study showed that the school has the potential for human resources in the form of motivated Santri and Asatiz, as well as natural resources in the form of unused agricultural land. The Agropreneur Training Program succeeded in fostering motivation among the Santri to be involved in the entire agricultural process, from planting to harvesting, as evidenced by their active participation. Cognitively, both Santri and Asatiz understand the process of planting, plant care, harvesting, and processing the results. The benefit for Islamic boarding schools is that some of their food needs can be met through the empowerment of these agropreneur students.

Abstract

Indonesian students studying both at home and abroad, especially those taking the political negotiation course, are very much interested, but they do not understand the many cultural factors that must be taken into account when negotiating with other people from different backgrounds. This study aims to provide an overview of the understanding of Indonesian students of negotiation in intercultural settings. This study presents a literature review with primary data on articles, magazines, reports, and theories. This study indicates that a good cross-cultural understanding can increase the percentage of success in the research negotiation process. Cultural barriers such as the lack of foreign language skills in communication, a sense of ethnocentrism, and prejudice can hinder the study negotiation process.

Abstract

Early marriage is a phenomenon that must be prevented because it has the potential to deprive children of their rights, such as the right to protection from discrimination, the right to education, the right to health, and social rights. The main drivers of early marriage include economic, religious, parental, and environmental factors. Early marriage has various consequences and impacts that are detrimental to personal well-being. This study used a systematic literature review method by taking data from Scopus and found 9 articles relevant to the research topic. The results showed that the impacts of early marriage on children include interruption of education, low economic status, stress, and the risk of maternal and child mortality. Therefore, the impact of early marriage is not in line with the principles of maqashid sharia which upholds human welfare. This study aims to determine the impact of early marriage and reveal that early marriage is not in line with the principles of maqashid sharia. The principles of maqashid sharia are protecting the mind (hifdz al-aql), protecting the soul (hifdz an-nafs), and protecting property (hifdz al-mal). In addition to discussing the impacts of early marriage and observing maqashid sharia, this study also provides recommendations for preventing early marriage. Keywords: Early Marriage, Impact of Early Marriage, Maqashid Sharia, Maslahah.

Abstract

The rapid integration of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education has created a new landscape filled with both opportunities and challenges, especially in the context of language learning. While AI offers undeniable convenience for English language tasks, its independent use creates significant ethical and pedagogical dilemmas. This study, therefore, aims to explore these challenges and the potential of AI in completing English language course homework. This case study utilized semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to describe and explain the revealed duality in the role of AI. The research reveals a duality in the role of AI. As a positive catalyst, AI serves as an effective cognitive assistant, providing ideational frameworks, initial concepts, and instant feedback that empower students to learn independently (self-directed learning). However, as a source of challenges, AI has been shown to produce biased and inaccurate data, and its unwise use raises serious ethical issues. These issues extend beyond plagiarism to include the erosion of critical thinking skills and a decline in intellectual originality when students use it indiscriminately as a substitute for cognitive effort. This study recommends using AI as a tool for self-learning, but it is necessary to limit students' use of AI. Furthermore, institutions are recommended to adapt AI but need to strengthen students’ digital literacy through structured AI usage guidelines.

Abstract

Although previous studies have acknowledged the significant effect of flipped classrooms in language learning, few research has concerned about its potential impact on EFL learners’ sociopragmatics knowledge. The present study aims to examine the promising role of flipped learning assisted by WhatsApp applications (i.e., WhatsApp-integrated flipped learning) in enhancing EFL learners’ appropriate use of refusals in English. Another objective is to examine EFL learners’ perception of the WhatsApp-integrated flipped learning activity in facilitating the learning process. This study employed a quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test design of experimental and control groups. The experimental group (N=36) was taught in a WhatsApp-integrated flipped learning, while the control group (N=36) was enrolled in a similar class but did not experience the use of any digital platform. The intervention was conducted in eight meetings, including the process of data collection using Discourse Completion Tests, semi-structured interviews, and a TAM questionnaire. The results revealed that WhatsApp-integrated flipped learning was proven as an effective strategy to enhance EFL learners’ speech acts of refusals, indicated by a significant difference in the post-test scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. They showed positive acceptance toward the use of the WhatsApp application to facilitate flipped classrooms for teaching sociopragmatics. In addition, the semi-structured interview further disclosed that the learners positively perceived WhatsApp-integrated flipped learning activity. Implications for English language teaching and suggestions for future research are further discussed.

Abstract

The increasing availability of digital knowledge resources has not been matched by the ability of students to engage effectively with academic texts in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts. This study investigated how the use of research articles as core learning materials supported knowledge construction, enhanced critical thinking, fosters student independence, and examined the role of lecturer feedback as pedagogical scaffolding. Using a qualitative case study design, the research involved 34 second-semester students in a Sharia Economic Law program, with data collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with seven purposively selected participants. Data were analyzed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. The findings indicated that engagement with English-language research articles facilitates progressive knowledge construction through collaborative and independent learning processes. Group work enhanced idea exchange and comprehension, while individual tasks promoted deeper reflection and autonomy. Lecturer feedback played a crucial role in guiding analytical thinking and improving students’ evaluation of academic texts. This study highlighted the importance of integrating authentic materials, structured feedback, and balanced learning approaches to strengthen ESP students’ academic literacy and higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

Research on the integration of digital technology in English language teaching has enormously been conducted. However, studies exploring digital teaching awareness and practice among English for specific purposes (ESP) teachers still remain a paucity of evidence. The present study aims to examine Indonesian ESP teachers’ digital teaching awareness and technology-based classroom activities. To reach the objective, qualitative approach under the procedure of narrative inquiry is applied. Semi-structured interview, observation, and document analysis are employed to obtain the required data from 14 Indonesian ESP teachers teaching at various fields of study. The results reveal that the Indonesian ESP teachers develop their digital teaching competence and awareness through professional training programs (e.g. joining workshop, seminar, and conference) and personal practice (e.g. learning from Youtube and other platforms). The results further depict that they utilize Social Networking Sites (e.g. Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram) and web-based materials (web-blog, Kahoot, Canva, and Edmodo) to assist their digital teaching practices. The results contribute to offering valuable insight and reference for English teachers to conduct interactive technology-based teaching and learning activities. In addition, the results can be used as a reference for school/college policymakers to ensure the efficacy of digital language learning practice.
