Abstract

The low of undergraduate students’ writing motivation is one of the classic problems encountered in many universities around the world. This phenomenon can be observed from the frequency of text produced by university students in various levels. Teachers around the world had practiced many methods and strategies in hope that the students’ writing motivation could be enhanced. However, this classic problem is still faced in the classroom today. It is interesting that the students who seldom to write in the classroom but are very active in writing in social media. The researcher then decided to investigate whether blog can enhance the students’ writing motivation. 21 students were involved in this research. After observing the students’ blog in almost 5 months and gathering information through open questionnaires, it has been concluded that blog could enhance the students’ writing motivation but the lack of students’ knowledge on how to operate the blog could be the reason why the students’ writing motivation (in this research) enhancement occurred only in small degree.

Abstract

This study aims at the perception of English teachers on the influence of the conducive environment of the school on students' English learning achievement (SMA Negeri 3 Ternate City, Indonesia). By involving two English teachers at the school, researchers conducted interviews to obtain the required information. By using content analysis, researchers find a variety of very interesting information to pay attention to. In fact, the level of environmental conduciveness in the school also affects the level of achievement of English learning. The contributing factors are differences in students' linguistic backgrounds, lack of technology support, and low time allocation for English subjects. Researchers also found that differences in culture, race, and religion did not affect the conduciveness of the English learning environment at all so that these variables were not relevant to student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the improvement of translation skills through a combination of the grammar translation method. This study shows that the students' translation skills have not improved significantly. This can be seen from the achievement of student understanding. The results obtained through a questionnaire show that the translation course is very liked by 66.7 percent of students. Meanwhile, other aspects have not been seen to increase optimally. For assignments / exercises the percentage of 53.3 percent of students showed sufficient results. Meanwhile, for the implications and benefits aspects, the achievement was only in the range of 13.3 percent and the benefits aspect of 20.0 percent.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the most pronounced vowel errors and what types of errors are made by the third-semester students of the English education study program at Khairun University. The research used a qualitative research method and the participants were twenty students at Khairun University. The results of the study can be concluded that the dominant error of vowel sounds made by students is the sound /i:/ reaching 62 (or 28.44%) and the data shows substitution is a type of pronunciation error made by students reaching (86.66%).
