Abstract

Color is a visual tool usually used in a movie which functions not only to make the movie looks good, but it is also to serve the story and build a character. Color brings a meaning behind its presences giving a sign that it can be interpreted accordingly. Chandler (2002) stated that sign is a meaningful unit which is interpreted as ‘standing for’ something other than itself.This current study analyzes the color red in The Giver movie as a sign based on semiotics approach. This study is a qualitative descriptive study. Document or content analysis is applied to analyze the captured scenes of The Giver movie whichcontains the color red. The study found out that the color red has several meanings behind its presences.The color is reflected in some properties. I found several things painted in color red around Jonas. The things are Viona’s hair, apples, books, and clothes.Even though the things have the same color red, each of them has different meaning beyond. The color red itself and the things that possess it have related meanings to complete each other. Also, the meaning of color red is closely related to Jonas’ character as the main character

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study aims to shed new light on Javanese language maintenance through the practice of English-Javanese code-switching reflected in a song entitled Lathi by Weird Genius feat Sara Fajira. The intrinsic merit of the song 'Lathi,' covering cultural values, song lyrics significance, and the song's moral message, were deliberately discussed here. The data are taken from interview transcripts, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed by first classifying the Lathi song lyrics into types of code switching, investigating the youths’ perception regarding the used of Javanese English code switching in Lathi song, and analyze the aspects of the songs highlighted the idea of Javanese language maintenance. The findings of this study suggest that the phenomenon of code-switching in Lathi songs is deliberately done to keep maintaining Javanese's existence as one of the popular vernacular in Indonesia. Language maintenance of the Javanese language in a song named Lathi can pique the public's interest in learning Javanese by creating Javanese language maintenance represented in its song lyrics. It makes the Javanese language gain popularity in the community, particularly among students and young people. It is, of course, a good sign of minimizing the threat of language shift. The continuous use of the local language as a language maintenance effort will avoid losing the community's first language

Abstract

There are numerous studies of linguistics landscape or study of texts in public spaces. However, study on the culinary sign is still rare in Indonesia. Thus, this paper explores the linguistics landscape of culinary signs around campus in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, the melting pot of cultures and languages. The research aims to analyze the form of language use and its function. The data collection is photographing culinary signs around three advanced campuses in Malang, namely the University of Brawijaya, State University of Malang, and the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Qualitative descriptive was used in analyzing the data. The results showed that Indonesian, English, and Javanese are the most frequent languages used in culinary banners or storefronts and other foreign languages (Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Malay) and vernaculars (Sundanese, Banjarese, Minangnese). It was found that the Malang culinary linguistics mirrored the taste and service of the store. Furthermore, foreign languages are becoming a way to go global and known by college students who most like modernization. The use of Javanese also acts as a symbol of maintaining the cultural heritage of Javanese people.

Abstract

This study aims to scrutinize the attitude of Javanese youth towards their use of local language. There are two research questions proposed in this study such as namely: 1) how is the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language, 2) what are the factors that effect on their attitudes. The objectives of this study are to define the attitude of Javanese youth towards their local language and to discover why they are behaving so. Furthermore, this study adopted qualitative method applying descriptive analysis and selected the students of English Department of Batch 2014 Batch in Brawijaya University as the participants. The results showed that the subjects indicated showed both positive and negative attitudes towards the use of Javanese language depending on the context. The positive attitude was frequently revealed on questions related to their efforts in conserving Javanese as the local language, while the negative attitude was mostly reflected on the statements associated with their language preference in daily life. Moreover, there are several factors affecting their language attitudes namely the Javanese language internal system, social and traditional, and the prestige and the power of language.

Abstract

The occurrence of Code switching phenomenon is relatively normal in bilingual and multilingual society. However, despite a large body of research on code switching, little attention has been given to code switching phenomenon in relation to language maintenance issue. This study investigates the types of code switching that are used by main characters in Yowis Ben The Series Episode 6; the main characters’ reasons to use code switching in Yowis Ben The Series Episode 6; and the investigation concerning Javanese language maintenance indication depicted in the movie. This descriptive qualitative study probes into the ways in which Javanese language as a vernacular language is used along with the standard Bahasa Indonesia in a movie.In addition to examining the types of code switching, this study also tries to go further within the issue of Javanese language maintenance the movie wants to convey. The results showed that there are a total of 20 data indicating three types of code switching in Yowis Ben The Series Episode 6: Intra-sentential switching (11), inter-sentential switching (8), and tag switching (once).The reasons of using code switching are to expresscertain feelings and attitudes, to talk about a specific topic, to express solidarity between people from different or the same ethnic groups, and to attract attention and persuade audiences.

Abstract

Complimenting is a typical speaking act and the method in which it is responded to can vary based on the culture of the speakers as well as the influence of other circumstances. The purpose of this study was to provide a more in-depth knowledge of compliment response research based on how it is used by university students learning EFL in everyday life. Furthermore, this study also aims at finding out if exposure to another culture affects university students learning English as a second language while responding to compliments. The data were garnered using data elicitation method by complimenting the participants’ look, possession, character, or aptitude. The finding found that the participants used ten types of responses; listed from the most frequently used type of compliment responses to the least used type of compliment responses: Comment Acceptance (8), Appreciation Token (2), Comment History (2), Question (2), Praise Upgrade (1), Reassignment (1), Return (1), Scale Down (1), Disagreement (1), and Qualification (1). According to the data, the majority of students in an international English literature class at Brawijaya University are likely to accept the compliments. Students tend to take compliments by thanking them and then making related comments. English-speaking countries consider a simple "thank you" to be an adequate response to a praise. This present study also confirms that short term encounterance with foreign culture exposure slightly affect EFL learners’ way of responding to compliments. This shows that the students learn the English language culture in terms of compliment.

Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of functional delayed echolalia towards an autistic individual in   Life, Animated documentary. The obtained data were derived from Owen Suskind's utterances and words in the aforementioned documentary, which the researchers manipulated and structured to fall into two categories of functional delayed echolalia. The study used qualitative descriptive method in analyzing the functional delayed echolalia of Owen Suskind using interactive and non-interactive functional categories of delayed echolalia theory proposed by Vicker (1999). The findings show that there are 8 (eight) out of 9 (nine) types of interactive delayed echolalia were discovered namely   Turn taking, Verbal, Completion,   Providing information, Labelling,   Protest,   Request,   Calling and Affirmation. Meanwhile, the non- interactive   delayed echolalia consists of three types namely   non-focused,   situation association, and   rehearsal.   The findings of this study are expected to give   a positive impact on both readers who are dealing with children with autism who have echolalia. It will provide information on their language development in order to later determine the ideal method to handle them with care.

Abstract

This study analyzes the types and reasons for code-mixing used by the speaker with a concern for the interlocutors, who are a native speaker and a non-native speaker. The significance of comparing the speaker's code-mixing aims to know if changes in the interlocutors affect the types and reasons for code-mixing adopted. This analysis applied the qualitative descriptive method to analyze data taken from two YouTube videos of an American native speaker namely Edward Avila entitled Chopping all my friend’s hair off and giving him makeover with Korean native speaker as the interlocutor and catching up with Sorn + A soft glam lewk with Korean non-native speaker as the interlocutor. For Korean native speaker interlocutor, the most frequently used code-mixing type is alternation, while for Korean non-native speaker interlocutor is insertion. However, the data identified three specific reasons for code-mixing with Korean native speaker interlocutor, notably clarification of the speech content, interjection, and quotation of someone else. Meanwhile, there are two specific causes for code-mixing revealed in the data of Korean non-native speaker interlocutor, namely discussion of a specific topic and repetition used for clarification. The varied types of interlocutors had an impact on the forms of code-mixing and the reasons for code-mixing in the dialogue

Abstract

Tasks and technology are reciprocally related since the integration of technology can benefit task-based language teaching (TBLT) implementation. This study investigates students’ speaking performance, learning experiences, and perceptions in a speaking course specially designed with video recording activities involving online audiences based on the principles of TBLT. Thirty-eight undergraduate students majoring in English and enrolled in the speaking class served as the respondents. The data were collected through speaking tests, Likert scale questionnaires, and interviews. The findings indicated that the students developed their speaking performance after experiencing speaking class through a computer-assisted language learning (CALL)-mediated TBLT with video recording activities. They were also able to find their strengths and weaknesses by watching their own video recordings on YouTube. The findings also showed that the students had positive learning experiences and perceptions of video recording activities with online audiences on YouTube. Nevertheless, a further investigation of the online interactions toward the use of tasks and digital learning platforms with online audiences is highly advised.

Abstract

This narrative inquiry is based on the lived experiences of parents who have a speech delayed child. A child with a language delay must go through in order to appropriately have strong competence in the language learning process. The data were derived from parents’ stories, a speech therapy progress book, medical records, and video recordings of classroom activities. Findings were focused on the thorough process a research subject has undergone to finally survive in catching up his lag of language development compared to the mainstream children of his age. After four years of intensive labor requiring parental involvement and three years of programmed therapy, the research subject achieves improvement milestones that enable him to catch up to conventional children's language development, which he should have completed. More research into the deployment of other linguistic aspects is needed to provide a clear picture of the development of his language learning.
