Abstract

This is a case study research in this paper reports on findings from the case study (syntactic and morphological) in an individual diagnosed with a genetic disorder, Down Syndrome (DS), that affect language development without getting the help of any official therapists. We perform pragmatic and phonological analyses alongside morphology and syntactic analyses on data collected from studying documents, observation, and interview results. The qualitative descriptive linguistic method is used in this study to provide a detailed description. The result shows some deficits performed by the DS caused by articulatory limitation, difficulty to follow some words in long statements, and difficulty to respond to the topic that he has not known before.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the use of taboo words in the modernized communication application named TikTok. A total of 67 samples were found, classified into 9 types of taboo words proposed by Jay (2009). The dominant type of taboo word found in TikTok is psychological, physical, social deviation insults, with a quantity of 31,3%. This major category was followed by the second largest type, sexual references by 18%, and at the third level, ethnic-racial-gender slur, which counted as much as 16,4%. Hereinafter, the researchers found offensive slang as much as 14.9%, profane and blasphemy as much as 8.9%, scatological reference & disgusting objects as much as 6%, and animal names as much as 4.5%. During the analysis regarding taboo words in TikTok, the categories of ancestral allusion and substandard vulgar terms have not been found. These types of taboo words are then classified based on the motive for their use, namely to signify various emotions, to obtain certain outcomes, and to express the speaker’s anger and frustration.

Abstract

This study deals with a strategy named Group Discussion model of CooperativeLearning strategy applied in the teaching of Critical Reading course at English Study Program,Brawijaya University. By using that strategy, it is expected that the problem in CriticalReading class can be solved and students’ ability in critical reading will, in turn, be improved.The design of the study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) since the study is aimed atimproving the students’ critical reading ability and solving the classroom’s problems on theteaching of reading. Based on its characteristics, the classroom action research is donerepeatedly until those problems can be solved. Dealing with the classroom setting, the study isdirected to develop the teaching strategy in order to find out a solution to the classroom’sproblem in the teaching of reading. This study reveals that Cooperative Learning strategy hassuccessfully improved students’ critical reading ability. In doing so, there are stages conductednamely, having cooperative work organization, using appropriate media, having creativity (forteachers), monitoring teaching and learning processes closely, and giving students feedback ontheir work. In conclusion, Cooperative Learning can be beneficial for students’ learning incritical reading as it can make students active and enjoy the classroom activities. However, italso has weaknesses such as time consuming and less appropriate for classes with biggernumber of students. Despite the weaknesses, teachers are still recommended to apply thisstrategy in critical reading classes.

Abstract

ABSTRAKKegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di PKBM (Pusat Kegiatan Belajar Masyarakat) Kendedes Kecamatan Lowokwaru Kota Malang. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk mengembangkan kemampuan literasi kritis peserta Kejar Paket di lembaga ini. Kegiatan ini dianggap sebagai kegiatan peningkatan kemampuan literasi dasar sebagai salah satu upaya percepatan edukasi warga di Malang pada khususnya. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat kali ini difokuskan pada upaya peningkatan literasi kritis sebagi pengembangan kemampuan literasi dasar peserta didik yang mengikuti pendidikan kesetaraan Paket A, B, C agar lebih baik. Dari hasil pelatihan yang diselenggarakan, seluruh peserta pelatihan menunjukkan keseriusannya untuk mengikuti proses pelatihan dari awal sampai akhir dan hasil akhir menunjukkan adanya tingkat literasi yang meningkat dan peningkatan motivasi belajar dari siswa dalam proses pembelajaran. Dengan demikian, hal ini dapat berpotensi menjadi pilot project untuk pengembangan pelatihan di PKBM lainnya di Malang Raya. Di samping itu, kontribusi kegiatan ini adalah mengembangkan pengetahuan dan daya literasi dan motivasi belajar siswa. Kata kunci: literasi kritis; motivasi; kejar paket; PKBM. ABSTRACTThis community service activity was carried out at the PKBM (Community Learning Activity Center) Kendedes, Lowokwaru District, Malang City. This activity aims to develop the critical literacy skills of Kejar Paket students at this institution. This activity is considered an activity to improve basic literacy skills as an effort to accelerate the education of residents, particularly in Malang. This community service activity is focused on efforts to increase critical literacy as a means of developing the basic literacy skills of students who take part in Equivalency Education Packages A, B, and C to make them better. From the results of the training that had been organized, all participants showed their seriousness in participating in the training process from the beginning of the sessions to the end; moreover, the final results showed an improved literacy level and increased learning motivation from students in the learning process. Thus, this could potentially become a pilot project for developing training at other PKBM in Malang Raya. Apart from that, the contribution of this activity is to develop students’ knowledge, literacy, and learning motivation. Keywords: critical literacy; motivation; kejar paket; PKBM.
