Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the structure of debate and the difference of usage of modulation by the candidates in the third session debate of Pilkada DKI Jakarta in 2017. The debate in a general election was a new medium in the campaign. This research revealed the form and meaning of dominated modulation used by the candidates by applying Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). This was a descriptive qualitative research using observation method in collecting the data. The source of data was a video of the third session debate of Pilkada DKI Jakarta in 2017. The data contained aspect of grammar and lexicon of the speech. Then, it was analyzed by using identity-method by Sudaryanto and content analysis suggested by Spradely. The result shows that there are two forms of modulation marker. It is modulation of inclination that is dominantly used by the first candidate and third candidate. Then, the second candidate dominantly uses modulation of obligation. The domination is a strategy of each candidate to defend and prioritize their programs for the next five years.

Abstract

The study explores on the application of modality reflecting the ideology by the author, Dale Carnegie, in ‘How to tn Friends and Influence People’ book and how the translator rendered them through the selection of translation techniques into Bagaimana Mencari Kawan dan Mempengaruhi Orang Lain . By carrying Teun A. Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model in determining the ideology and Simpson’s Language, Ideology and Point of View in determining the modality, we analyse the ideological expressions applied through the modalities and the Indonesian translated version. Dijk’s model was chosen since it represents the genre of this book that he brings a great theme to his ideology by directing it to social cognition. The modalities found in this research are epistemic, boulomaic, evaluative adjective, evaluative adverb and deontic. These modalities were translated into Indonesian using 10 (ten) translation techniques initiated by Molina & Albir (2002) and rated with the model of translation quality assessment from Nababan et al. (2012). The techniques which lead to the good of translation quality were established equivalent, transposition, amplification, (obligatory) modulation, and compensation. In general, the translator has been able to render the author's ideology manifested in modalities by applying these translation techniques. Thus, translator’s competency in choosing the right translation techniques shows his or her capability in comprehending the context of situation, elements of ideology in accordance with the genre, function and communicative purpose of the text.

Abstract

In the field of simultaneous translation, live captioning has not been sufficiently touched by research. There have been shifts in translating characterization due to this being done in real-time and on the spot. It is critical that target readers or viewers get the same impression of a character's personality as portrayed in the original work. Consequently, translations of literary plays must be thoroughly checked for fidelity. The objective of the study is to undertake an in-depth analysis of the live captioning provided in "The Life Struggle of Sagopi" puppet theater. It compares the character portrayal of the protagonist, Sagopi, in the original play and the translation. Employing a content analysis technique, all of the utterances describing Sagopi's beauty were collected. As a method for analyzing the data, the theory of Appraisal was utilized. When the described Appraisal elements are identical to those in the original, the characterization would be considered equivalent. The analysis reveals that the live captions do not fully represent the portrayal of Sagopi. While the description of Sagopi's beauty in the shadow puppet performance is detailed, the English live caption does not reflect this. In the target language, deletions and shifts of appraisals indicate the changes. The lack of culturally relevant terminologies and the time lag between the puppeteer's oral utterances and the translator's typing speed during live captioning are the main causes of the problem. Furthermore, live captioning is time and space-constrained. Almost always, it is a condensed version of the oral source text. This demonstrates how difficult it is to achieve the same level of appraisal as the original. This is not to suggest that viewers have no right to a high-quality translation. Despite its shortcomings, the written text in the form of a live caption is regarded as the finest way for foreigners to enjoy a puppet show.

Abstract

Indonesian elementary school students show their motivation to write. A kind of books written by and for children of their age, commonly termed as Kecil-Kecil Punya Karya (KKPK) ‘although young we have writing works’, are nowdays available at bookstores. These books can further motivate other children to compose. To accommodate this motivation, the language center of Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta held a writing contest for elementary school students in Surakarta and the surrounding area. Thirtyfour students participated the contest, thus 34 texts from such a competition were collected as the object of analysis in this study to see the quality of the text structure as well as the text texture of the texts. The analysis on the text structure shows that several texts are arranged in a single kind of genre. However, the other texts are composed in multi-genre—meaning that each text in this kind demonstrates the features of a genre, but it accomodates other short texts with different genre. The former is named as a text with a macro genre, whereas the latter are termed as texts with a micro one. Meanwhile, the choice of words and the exploitatio of grammatical construction for the clauses of most of the texts shows weaknesses. Many academic and technical terms as well as nominalization are exploited. In addition, several texts have metaphorical words in them. This phenomenon influences the readability level of the texts. Furthermore, many clauses are constructed in complex arrangement, while some otheSrs incomplete in terms of grammar substances. This, therefore, add the negative quality of the texts. Several systemic strategies are provided to make the texts better. They can be effective models for the young writers as well as for the teachers of Bahasa Indonesia subject at elementary schools. Keywords: Genre, Cerita, Gramatika, Teks
