Abstract

Abstract

Rhetorical construction may have a number of functions in a text. It attempts to prompt a reaction to the message of a statement by expressing it in words that have particular connotations. The study aims at the application of rhetorical constructions reflecting the author’s ideology, Dale Carnegie, in ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ and how the translator rendered them through the selection of translation techniques into Indonesian version using Van Dijk’s CDA model to determine the quality of translation. By applying a content analysis, the study finds that in general the author uses rhetorical constructions such as repetitions, metaphors, rhetorical questions, and hyperboles to represent his ideology in this book. The author explores a lot on the persuasive and motivational ideology. The findings also show evidence that the translator implements several different translation techniques, such as established equivalent, variation, transposition, amplification, and modulation in order to attain a high quality of translation and to preserve the author’s ideology. Meanwhile, the use of translation techniques such as literal, reduction, generalization, modulation (optional), and discursive creation result in a lower quality of translation and also create a shift (in form and meaning) in the translated version. Thus, these techniques used show the translator’s ability to comprehend what is behind the text, and the translator must also take into consideration any shift in meaning of the ideological construction in the translation process so as to avoid a low quality of translation. This implies that translator should consider the ideology behind the author’s intention to deliver his or her message and chooses the appropriate techniques of translation to maintain the original message in the translated version

Abstract

The study explores on the application of modality reflecting the ideology by the author, Dale Carnegie, in ‘How to tn Friends and Influence People’ book and how the translator rendered them through the selection of translation techniques into Bagaimana Mencari Kawan dan Mempengaruhi Orang Lain . By carrying Teun A. Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model in determining the ideology and Simpson’s Language, Ideology and Point of View in determining the modality, we analyse the ideological expressions applied through the modalities and the Indonesian translated version. Dijk’s model was chosen since it represents the genre of this book that he brings a great theme to his ideology by directing it to social cognition. The modalities found in this research are epistemic, boulomaic, evaluative adjective, evaluative adverb and deontic. These modalities were translated into Indonesian using 10 (ten) translation techniques initiated by Molina & Albir (2002) and rated with the model of translation quality assessment from Nababan et al. (2012). The techniques which lead to the good of translation quality were established equivalent, transposition, amplification, (obligatory) modulation, and compensation. In general, the translator has been able to render the author's ideology manifested in modalities by applying these translation techniques. Thus, translator’s competency in choosing the right translation techniques shows his or her capability in comprehending the context of situation, elements of ideology in accordance with the genre, function and communicative purpose of the text.

Abstract

Politeness possibly affects both in speaking and an action in an interaction. It performs the speaker has a good moral. According to Yule (2000:60), “Politeness, in an interaction, can then be defined as the means employed to show awareness of another person‟s face.” Based on this theory, it tells how the speaker acts to conduct awareness of the other‟s face. Furthermore, the speaker will act carefully whenever he faces the addressee to respect his/her face, as the addressee has a higher status than the speaker. Additionally, politeness is divided into four strategies, positive politeness, on record, off record, and negative politeness. Each strategy has own way in interaction. This paper aims at investigating (1) What are the politeness strategies applied in the English and Indonesian subtitle in Nanny Mcphee and (2) What kind of translation procedures used in rendering English politeness strategies into Indonesian.

The result of this study was that all of types were applied by Tommy but existential presupposition was used more frequent than other types. Existential presupposition found 78 data, structural is 19 data, factive is 5 data, lexical also is 4 data, non-factive was 2 data and counter-factual is2 data. Existential presupposition is commonly shown because Tommy as the main character is a sergeant/ leader. He has power, authority and wants to show the existence of situation, condition, people around him and himself by saying utterances that contain its presupposition. Later, he also wants and strives to cover his feeling, weakness, mental pressure from his interlocutors Thus, existential presupposition is more used by Tommy to show the situation that he faced, the power of Tommy as a sergeant and represent his mental pressure during his duty.
