<![CDATA[The study scrutinizes the negotiation of a person’s cultural identity in Viet Thanh Nguyen's short story, “The Americans”. As a diaspora, Nguyen wrote the character of Claire Carver in “The Americans” as a concrete depiction of a diaspora who struggles with negotiating cultural identity. This negotiation is depicted by tensions between Claire (a second generation of a multiracial family), who missed her Asian identity, and his father, who wants her to retain American identity. Therefore, this study explores the homeland (Asia) and host land (America) position in this diaspora character. The cultural identity and diaspora concept by Stuart Hall is applied to critically assess the identity negotiation experienced by the character in the short story. Then, this study applies the content analysis method. The data forms are sentences that indicate identity negotiation. The findings of the study indicate that the diaspora character engages in cultural identity negotiation, which involves American cultural identity of her father as the one who dominates her to embrace American identity and her Asian cultural identity, Vietnamese, as the effect of confusion of her cultural identity since she is a mixed race of black American and a Japanese. This study thus suggests that a further study that celebrates the diaspora’s identity may participate in cherishing the diversity.]]>

<![CDATA[Desa Ciemas merupakan salah satu dari beberapa desa di Kecamatan Ciemas yang merupakan wilayah penggerak perekonomian Kabupaten Sukabumi pada sektor pariwisata. Dinas Pariwisata setempat mencatat bahwa sekitar 6.000 wisatawan baik domestik maupun mancanegara berkunjung setiap tahunnya.. Jumlah wisatawan ini sebenarnya masih terbilang rendah jika dilihat dari potensi sumber daya alam yang ada. Hasil wawancara dengan salah satu pemangku kepentingan di pemerintah daerah Sukabumi menemukan bahwa sedikitnya ada tiga masalah yang dihadapi oleh Desa Ciemas dalam meningkatkan kunjungan wisatawan lokal dan mancanegara, yaitu (1) belum adanya upaya pemberdayaan sumber daya masyarakat generasi milenial; (2) keterbatasan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris; (3) pengelolaan teknologi informasti yang belum tepat sasaran. Maka program pengabdian kepada masyarakat dalam bentuk pemberdayaan generasi milenial melalui pelatihan Copy Writing dan Travel Writing penting dilaksanakan guna mempromosikan paiwisata di Desa Ciemas kepada masyarakat dunia. Dengan metode pelatihan berbasis blended learning, pengabdian ini berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan milenial dalam (1) kemampuan Copy Writing dan Travel Writing dalam mempromosikan pariwisata di Desa Ciemas melalui media sosial yang mereka miliki; dan (2) kemampuan untuk mengoperasikan aplikasi digital untuk mempromosikan tempat wisata di Desa Ciemas.]]>

<![CDATA[Kosakata sebagai elemen vital dalam komunikasi merupakan salah satu hambatan bagi penutur bahasa kedua dan atau bahasa Asing. Untuk bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing, masyarakat Indonesia memiliki hambatan dalam kosakata dikarenakan kemampuan mengingat yang rendah. Hal tersebut juga dialami oleh siswa kelas X SMA Negeri 10 Depok. Pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris bagi siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri (SMAN) 10 Depok melalui teknik bercerita. Teknik bercerita melibatka konteks yang dapat membuat siswa mampu mengingat dan memahami diksi sehingga kosakatanya akan meningkat. SMAN 10 Depok sebagai salah satu sekolah unggulan di kota Depok merupakan salah satu mitra pengabdian masyarakat program studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Pamulang. Pengabdian yang dilaksanakan selama 3 hari ini melibatkan 5 mahasiswa Sastra Inggris terpilih yang ditugaskn langsung untuk bercerita dan melakukan serangkaian aktivitas terstruktur. Hasil dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah siswa kelas X SMA Negeri 10 Depok mampu menikmti teknik bercerita dan mengikuti alur cerita dengan baik walaupun kemampuan koakata masih terbatas. Hal ini dikarenakan teknik becerita melibatkan konteks yang holistic dan membantu pemahaman terhadap kosakata yang masih terasa asing. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik bercerita merpakan teknik meningkatkan kosakata yang baik bagi siswa sehingga disarankan untuk para guru dalam mengajar kosakata agar dapat melibatkan konteks seerti halnya teknik bercerita.]]>

<![CDATA[This article aims to explore the relationship between gender and power in the short story, Accidental Transients, by Randa Jarrar. It discusses how women’s freedom is limited in a patriarchal society. In this kind of society, there is male supremacy which places men as the superior one. This study applied feminist existentialist concept by Simone de Beauvoir. It engages with an idea that women have to be able to become subjects in order to be not dominated by men. Furthermore, this study employs content analysis method. The data used in this study are sentences that show the issue of gender and power in Accidental Transients written by Randa Jarrar. The results of this study show that the main character, Dina, in patriarchal life is burdened by her gender role to be responsible for domestic tasks. In addition, she also does not have the freedom to act as she intends. Dina's character in this story shows that male dominance over women is still difficult to eliminate in a patriarchal society.]]>

<![CDATA[This study is purposed to reveal cultural displacement and diaspora in Saeed Teebi’s short story, Woodland. This story tells about an Algerian diaspora, Noor, and her experiences for being uprooted from her native country. Noor's experiences exemplify the complicated of mental and physical upheaval which also illustrate the long-lasting effects of relocation on personal identity. Her observations provide insights into the difficulties experienced by people of the diaspora as she makes her way through life in a new cultural setting. This study applies a concept of diaspora by Stuart Hall focusing on cultural displacement experienced by diaspora. This displacement relates to identity construction due to the process of leaving the homeland. Furthermore, a content analysis method is applied in this study. The result of the study shows that Teebi's exploration of Noor's journey sheds light on the diverse dimensions of displacement, providing a nuanced understanding of the diaspora experience. Through Noor's narrative, the study contributes to the broader discussion on the complex nature of identity, belonging, and the persistent echoes of one's homeland in the lives of diaspora individuals.]]>

<![CDATA[This study was purposed to reveal doubleness of cultural identity experienced by diaspora individuals in a short story written by Randa Jarrar, entitled Him, Me, Muhammad Ali. This story captured a life of diaspora who was not easy for a completely different culture between the homeland and the hostland. Jarrar depicted how being a Muslim living in a western country could be totally a mess for her cultural identity. To conduct this study, the method used was qualitative descriptive by collecting the data through reading the novels. Then, the certain quotations that relates to diaspora were analyzed by cultural identity and diaspora concept from Stuart Hall. This diaspora term refers to the character who owns two or more different culture in his life. The result of the analysis framed that being a diaspora living in a country with a completely different culture is complicated, especially to define the diaspora individual’s cultural of identity. The diaspora character was in the state of doubleness, which they could not completely belong to one culture. The character has culture in between his homeland (Muslim culture) and hostland (American culture). However, Jarrar depicts that there was a tendency for a culture to be more dominant than the other one.]]>

<![CDATA[The study aimed to depict how the beauty standards construct female objectification in Nappily Ever After and to analyze how the main character struggled toward beauty standards in the Nappily Ever After novel. This study is sought with qualitative methods to reveal the novel's issue. This study applied the theory of beauty myth from Naomi Wolf. The result of the study found that the beauty ideal is a woman who has straightened hair, brightening skin, a tall, slim body, and a pointed nose. Those highlighted Venus’s physical appearance which made her seem to be a typical woman and objectified her to conform to beauty standards. The study concluded that Venus internalized the beauty ideal which made her feel restricted by her looks and resulted in body image dissatisfaction. Venus struggled after she cut her hair which made her become an outcast in beauty image, being invisible by men, dismissal, and judged by people.]]>

<![CDATA[Mentawai is an island in West Sumatera inhabited by indigenous community that still maintain their culture. However, this origin culture still cannot strongly attract international tourists. Most of these tourists come to Mentawai for surfing. In fact, Mentawai can potentially become a tourism destination that offers authentic culture, primarily through the existence of cultural center created by local people. One of the cultural centers is Sanggar Pasigeugeu Puro 2. This cultural community has made some efforts to promote Mentawai culture through social media. They have uploaded various content about Mentawai culture in Instagram. However, they have lack of skills in to create cultural content that have a good engagement for Instagram users. They also face obstacles in English skills so that they are not able to create English caption for their cultural content. This fact shows that the partner faces problems in creating and producing English-based cultural content for social media to reach international Instagram users. Therefore, this community program is purposed to provide trainings on producing cultural contents and to improve English skills for members of Sanggar Pasigeugeu Puro 2. In this community service, they can enrich their skills in various fields. As a result, they have chances not only to promote Mentawai cultures but also to document them in the forms of photos and videos. The result of this community service shows that the members’ skills in English, photography, and videography has improved that they can produce a more qualified cultural content.]]>
