Abstract

Knowledge of various teaching strategies is one of the important things that teachers need to have. In this case, every teacher must equip themselves with a variety of teaching strategies to achieve success in teaching BIPA. The text-based approach is one of the approaches that teachers can apply in teaching BIPA. There have been many studies that prove the success of this approach. However, the use of text-based approaches to teaching BIPA is still rare. Therefore, this article aims to provide a brief overview of the use of a text-based approach in teaching BIPA. This paper will present an understanding of a text-based approach in general, the advantages of using a text-based approach in teaching BIPA, and examples of using a text-based approach in teaching BIPA.

Abstract

This study is intended to analyze variations of formative assessment strategies applied in Language Evaluation class. The class was taught by an English native speaker. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in the study in which interviews and classroom observations were conducted to collect the data. In addition, syllabus and materials used for the class were also used as the supporting instruments in the study. The findings set out that various kinds of formative assessment used in the respective class. They were oral question, choral questioning, a quiz, Think-Pair-Share, Think-Pair-Write-Share, pair work and group work. The delivery of each assessment technique are differed in each lesson, but are always preceded with questions before a specific technique used. The study advocates that formative assessment in higher education is highly suggested, yet real challenges lie for lecturers to apply.

Abstract

This study sought to find out the result of implementing Flipped Learning in pre-university English class in one of private universities in Indonesia. The study answers the question on to what extend the flipped learning work or fail when being implemented in the respective class. The data which were the result of pre-test and post-test were collected using quantitative method. To analyse the data, a non-parametric approach was used to analyse the impact of the FL approach on student performance in the EPS program. The difference between the pre- and test- scores was calculated and used in a hypothesis testing method using the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon Test. The result indicated that there is no significance difference between the treatment group and the control group. Some possible reasons why the insignificance happen are presented as well as some recommendations towards future studies in FL context.

Abstract

Writing as one of the productive skills is offered as a required course in many English language program at many universities. However, research showed that teaching writing skill faced some challenges. Therefore, this article offered an approach that shed the light. The article discussed a description of what a comparison and contrast essay in general, the definition of Genre Based Approach in teaching writing and the application of GBA in teaching comparison and contrast essay. The article serve as a reference for teachers in teaching comparison and contrast essay for academic writing and other purposes.

Abstract

Directorate General of Higher Education Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia issued a decree named SK Dirjen Number 43 regarding the implementation of the personality development course in higher education. The vision of teaching those courses, including teaching Indonesian language, is to provide source of values and guidelines in the development and implementation of study programs to lead students to establish their personality as Indonesian people. The study brings comprehensions about students acceptance of teaching the course and be useful for study programs that offers ELE. The programs can use the findings as a reference how they have to design their curriculum to meet students needs as well as in line with the government regulations. this study applied a phenomenology under the qualitative approach. Based on the result of the data analysis to capture students of English Language Education (ELE) perceive the teaching of Bahasa Indonesia course at the university level, the researchers put into two major themes. The first theme is students positive perceptions Bahasa Indonesia course, while the last is students negative perception towards similar course.

Abstract

ABSTRACTTechnological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is a framework teachers can follow to implement technology in the classroom. With the presence of technology, mastering English skills and language components is beyond possible. In listening, for instance, exposure to meaningful inputs is greater. With the help of technology, students can access to meaningful inputs for their listening. Students have many different options to listen to what is happening in the English-speaking world. At the same time, teachers are provided with abundant resources online that they can use or incorporate to assist them in teaching listening. The abundant technology eases teachers’ responsibility for creating a supportive teaching and learning environment. Hence, this practical article aims to present a unit plan that considers elements involved in designing instructions for teaching listening in the EFL context as the setting that involves technology integration. Among many online resources, the ESL-lounge is selected as listening material that is free to use, interesting and meaningful. The plan is designed to teach listening to university students, yet the outline suits all education levels and can be adapted to teach other skills and language components. Through appropriate lesson planning, teachers’ TPACK and professional development are strengthened. Keywords: TPACK; lesson plan; EFL/ESL context

Abstract

Teachers are required to equip themselves with knowledge about the use of technology in teaching. The purpose of this community service activity is to strengthen technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK) of madrasah teachers through training in the use of a variety of free IT-based applications. The training that is as a form of teacher self-development focused on madrasah teachers in Pasuruan area and MAN 1 Pasuruan was the school where the training was executed. Using the ASSURE model, the training ran well. As indicated from the data resultsed from questionnaire distributed as part of the training evaluation showed positive attitudes, such as the training improved teachers’ motivation in utilizing IT-based applications in teaching, and added references to a variety of free IT applications. The results of monitoring also shows that teachers used the applications for teaching their classes. At the end, the teachers expected that the training on technology related topic should be conducted continuously in the future. Keywords: IT-based Applications, Training, Strengthening TPK
