Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the difficulties that mostly faced by students in listening comprehension and the factors which cause the difficulties at English language and literature department FBS UNP. This study employed descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects of this research were K-2 Class which consists of 32 students selected by using cluster sampling technique. The data was collected from questionnaire and interview. The researcher distributed the questionnaire to all members of the class.  After that, the researcher chose six students to be interviewed. The results of this study showed that the difficulties that the students faced in listening comprehension were related into three categories, they were the listening material, the listener, and the physical setting. Besides, the factors which cause students’ difficulties in listening comprehension were depend on others, shame to ask the lecturer about the material, having emotional disturbances, the lecturer explains the material too quickly, lack of reward and reinforcement, and unfocused.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out the translation quality and the difficulties faced by the third year students of Universitas Negeri Padang in translating a hortatory exposition text. The data of this research were the translation quality and the difficulties faced in translating a hortatory exposition text entitled Bersama Atasi Covid-19. The data were collected by using a translation test and analyzed by using the TQA model by Sofyan and Tarigan (2019) and four components by Sari (2018). To gain the trustworthiness of the research, this research applies the validator and the raters. The finding shows that translation quality of students in translating hortatory text was 80 in almost completely successful level. There are 18 students (60%) categorized into successful level, 12 students (40%) in almost completely successful level, and no one (0%) in adequate, inadequate, and totally inadequate level. Furthermore, there were three thirteen mistakes found in the finding which grammatical structure is the most frequent mistake made by the students.

Abstract

A translator should be able to convey the intended meaning contained in the source language into the target language. The result of initial observation is some of the students in translation class tend to translate without reading the whole text that might lead to misunderstanding of source text. There might be some other translation problems faced by the student translators. This study aims at analyzing the problems faced by the student translators in translating a historical recount text from English into bahasa Indonesia. This study used a descriptive method. The participants were the third year English Department Students who took translation as their elective course. The data were collected using Keylogging (Translog) tools for more representative data. The data were analyzed using a translation process procedure. The results indicate that there are ten problems founds in the students’ translation, they are the improper use of generalization technique, improper of borrowing technique, target language structure, meaning deletion, the improper use of literal technique, context misunderstanding, target language interference, meaning addition, inability to find right equivalent, source text misunderstanding. These problems are mainly caused by the students’ low translation skills.

Abstract

The accuracy in translation is one of important aspects in translation quality. Accuracy is a term used to determine whether the message in the source language or target languages is equivalent or not. This study aimed to find out the accuracy the third year English Department students at Universitas Negeri Padang translate news item texts from Bahasa Indonesia to English as well as to describe inversion and deviation of meaning. The sample of this research was 32 students from Translation class at English Department chosen by using cluster random sampling. The focus of this study was the students accuracy in translating news item text from Bahasa Indonesia to English and kinds of errors in students translation work. The data of this research were obtained from the result of translation test about translating news item from Bahasa Indonesia into English. The data were assessed by using a rubric of accuracy rating instrument. The result of the research showed that the average of students accuracy in translating news item text from Bahasa Indonesia to English was 21.4 which categorized into almost completely successful. Furthermore, the occurrence of errors in students translation work was categorized into two types, namely, inversion and deviation of meaning in which deviation of meaning became the highest percentage of error (97.3%).

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the effect of academic procrastination and learning motivation on the learning achievement of English education students at Padang State University. This type of research is quantitative. The population in this study were students of English Language Education at Padang State University class of 2019 with the sampling technique using proportional random sampling. The number of samples used were 72 student. Data collection techniques used questionnaires and documentation with a Likert scale rating to measure respondents' answers. The data analysis technique uses path analysis with the help of the SPSS version 25 program. The results of this study indicate that (1) academic procrastination influences learning achievement, (2) learning motivation influences learning achievement and (3) academic procrastination and learning motivation influences simultaneously and significant to learning achievement. The implementation of this research is so that English Education students can increase their learning motivation and not take the action of procrastinating doing assignments so that English Education students can improve their learning achievement optimally.Key words: Academic Procrastination, Learning Motivation, and Learning Achievement

Abstract

This research investigates the students’ translating quality and difficulties in translating Explanation text from English into Bahasa Indonesia. This research is qualitative research. The sample of this research is 26 students in twelfth science one, selected by using technique of random sampling. To get the data, the researcher used two instrument, they are test to find out the translation quality and questionnaire to find out the difficulties. Based on the result, students’ translation quality in translating explanation text were mostly in good quality, with mean score 7,826. However the researcher found that the most difficulties in translating explanation text are linguistic factors, where the linguistic factor dominates students' difficulties compared to non-linguistic factors. although students can translate text explanations, students still need to fix their difficulties when translating explanation text, so that in the future they can improve their skills in translating

Abstract

This thesis presents a quantitative research study that assesses the digital literacy skills level of students in the English Department at Universitas Negeri Padang, focusing on factors influencing their proficiency. The research findings reveal that the majority of students demonstrate a high level of digital literacy skills, with a significant proportion categorized as very good or good. However, only one student falls into the poor level category, indicating an overall positive digital literacy skills landscape among the participants. The study employs a quantitative research approach, utilizing surveys to collect data on students' Knowledge of Digital Literacy and factors affecting their ability to use it. The questionnaires provide insights into various factors that students perceive as hindrances to their digital literacy development. The analysis of the survey data identifies the main factors as follows: (1) lack of budget, (2) lack of supporting resources, (3) lack of environment, (4) lack of training opportunities, (5) lack of time, (6) lack of facilities, (7) lack of interest, (8) lack of learning materials, (9) lack of skills, and (10) lack of knowledge. These findings shed light on the challenges faced by students in developing their digital literacy skills and inform potential areas of improvement in instructional practice. Educators and policymakers can utilize this information to address the identified factors and create an environment conducive to enhancing students' digital literacy competencies.
