Abstract

Metaphor is two things of an implicit comparison which two unlike objects are compared with factual, the first is original meaning and the second is describing of metaphor. The purpose of this research is to analyze the types of metaphor using the theory of Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The researcher used descriptive method. The data were collected by downloading Minangkabaunese songs based on themes which fail in love or romance theme and rantau theme, listening them repeatedly, identifying and putting them into table. The data were also analyzed by classifying the data, analyzing the data, deciding the research findings, and drawing the conclusion. The result in this research there are 23 the data found in Minangkabaunese songs whose theme is fail in love or romance: structural (34,78%), orientational (39,13%), ontological (26,09%) and 25 the data found in Minangkabaunese songs whose theme is rantau: structural (56%), orientational (36%), ontological (8%). Therefore, a number of selected Minangkabaunese songs were dominated by both structural and orientational metaphor.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find the multimodal analysis used in Man of Steel and Avengers Infinity Wars movie posters. The Method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method. This research used theory semiotic approach which focuses on multimodal system proposed by Cheong (2004). The researcher found 6 types elements of multimodal in Man of Steel and Avengers Infinity Wars posters such as material, behavioral, mental, identifying, attributive, and intensive. The data were collected by analysis the movie posters. They were 30% on material, 15% on behavioral, 15% on mental, 15% on identifying, 10% on attributive, and 15% on intensive in Man of Steel poster. Meanwhile in Avengers Infinity Wars poster, the research found 40% on material, 5% on behavioral, 15% on mental, 10% on identifying, 10% on attributive, 20% on intensive.

Abstract

This research breaks down about sorts of ecolexicon in pantun of petatah petitih in Minangkabaunese wedding ceremony found in Lintau Buo sub-area. The point of this research is to discover the ecolexicon in the wedding ceremony and its connection to the biological condition of the locale. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The aftereffect of this exploration shows that the most widely recognized sort of ecolexicon discovered is biotic lexicon with flora 10 data, at that point fauna lexicon 7 data and the latter is abiotic lexicon which discovered 10 data. The outcome shows that all ecolexcion utilized in the petatah petitih of the wedding ceremony are additionally found in the ecological environment of the locale.

Abstract

This research investigates the comparison between Batusangkar sub-dialect and Lintau Buo sub-dialect, which focuses on phonetic and phonological aspects. The aim of this study is to identify the types of sound changes that occur between two sub-dialects in the same language from phonetic and phonological aspects. This research used a descriptive method. The researcher used elicitation techniques in conducting interviews to collect data from each informant. The results of this study indicate that there are 13 sound changes, which are divided into 5 vowel changes, that are [a] to [əʊ], [ɪ], [ə], and [ɑ:] to [ɔ:]. Then, 4 consonant changes, that are [k] to [ɳ], [r] to [w] and [ɰ], and [t] to [m], and 4 diphthong changes, that are [ɪa] to [ɪə] and [ɪʊ], [ʊa] to [ʊə] and [ʊ]. In addition, there are sound changes caused by phonological processes; assimilation, dissimilation, insertion, and deletion. Furthermore, there are several words that have full vocabulary changes. The results show that the pronunciation between the two sub-dialects is different. The significant changes occurred when the word in sound [a] in Batusangkar sub-dialect is changes to [o] in Lintau Buo sub-dialect and the word, which have a phonological process that is deletion.

Abstract

AbstractThis article analyzed words in Minangkabaunese that share the same semantic prime: TOUCH using Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM). This research was conducted using the descriptive qualitative approach. The data that were found in this research were the words connected that are connected to the semantic prime TOUCH in Minangkabau language. The sources of this data were the 11 informants from the 11 districts in Padang city, which is the capital city of the West Sumatera Province. The data were collected using interview guidelines, recording equipment, and writing equipment. An interactive model of data analysis is used to analyze the data. From the data that were collected and analyzed there are a total of 6 words that are connected to semantic prime TOUCH: maawai, manggaduah, maambiak, marabuik, marameh, and maresek. These words are similar but not exactly synonymous that they will create a misconception in diction.

Abstract

The aim of this study is analyse the speech style used by Ellen Degeneres in Ellen Talk Show. The title “Ellen Meets a 5-Year-Old Geography Expert”.Ellen Degeneres talk show is a TV show. The objectives of the study are to identify the speech styles used by the host and the guest in Ellen Degeneres Talk show and to identify the dominant speech styles used by the host and the guest on Ellen Degeneres Talk show.The findings of data is quantitative data, is it present in numbers and percentages. In analyzed the data, the writer read the transcript of conversation between Ellen and Nate and analyzed the data based on Joos theory. Then, the data has been presented in the form of a percentage table. The result of this research the writer found there are four speech style used by Ellen and Nate and once of category didn’t exist from this data (frozen style).This research is presenting of the data as main characters utterance containing speech styles. Based on Martin Joos theory (Frozen style, Formal style, Consultative style,Casual style and Intimate style) the writer found the speech styles used by Ellen and Nate, they are casual style that only occurs 11 times or 68%, consultative style that occurs 2 times or 13%, formal style that occurs 2 times or 13%, and intimate style that occurs once or 6%. The mostly used by Ellen and Nate occurs 11 times or 68%. Finally, the writer suggests the next researchers to explore more theories and the newest theory of speech styles.

Abstract

AbstractMulitimodal is a study that analyzes the meaning of text containing two or more semiotic systems; linguistic, visual, audio, gesture and place. Analyzing multimodal through semiotic approach has been used in the analysis of cover magazine (Gill, 2015), mascara advertisement (Baykal, 2016), cartoon movie (Wulan, 2017), and music video (Brady, 2015). Meanwhile, in this research the writer analyzes multimodal in beauty product advertisement especially lipstick product. This research is intended to, 1) investigate how verbal and visual elements conveyed meanings in both Wardah Lip Cream Matte Lipsticks and Purbasari Hi Matte Lip Cream advertisements. 2) find the comparison between verbal and visual elements used in Wardah Exclusive Matte Lip Cream and Purbasari Hi Matte Lip Cream advertisements. This research used descriptive qualitative method. Based on the data of analysis, it reveals that the visual and verbal processes of these advertisements are in harmony and they complement each other to give a complete message to the audience. The analysis also reveals the similarities of these two advertisements in the three level of metafunctions. In ideational metafunction the most dominant processes used are material and attributive processes, for interpersonal metafunction the most dominant mood used is declarative and for textual metafunction the most dominant theme used is unmarked topical theme.Keywords: Advertisement, beauty product, multimodal analysis, verbal element, visual element.

Abstract

This study aims at describing verbal and visual elements in Sumbar Holiday tourism brochure of Mandeh Island, West Sumatera. The verbal and visual elements are analyzed by using Cheong′s (2004) generic structure. The researcher used descriptive research method. The data in this research were verbal and non-verbal texts found in Sumbar Holiday tourism brochure of Mandeh Island. The brochure was downloaded from travel and tour agent Instagram account that is chosen randomly. The result of the study reveals that the brochure have all generic structure which is lead, display, emblem (verbal), announcement, enhancer, emblem (visual), tag, and call-and-visit information. The finding of Sumbar Holiday brochure fully supports Cheong′s (2004) theory. The verbal and visual elements support each other and cohere to convey a message to the reader. The message conveyed to readers become more persuasive, and it arouses their interest to use the tour and travel company service.

Abstract

Geography and social life were two main causes of why a language has the variation. One of them is lexical variation The purpose of this research was (1) to identify the lexical similarities between Simarasok sub-dialect and Padang Tarok sub-dialect (2) to identify the lexical differences between Simarasok sub-dialect and Padang Tarok sub-dialect. In this research, the researcher used descriptive method; it is possible to compare two sub-dialects so the researcher can find the similarities of vocabularies, the lexical variation and the uniqueness of lexical changes. From the research that has been done, the researcher used 200 words of swadesh list and 100 words of basic vocabularies to see the lexical similarities and differences that exist between Simarasok sub-dialect and Padang Tarok sub-dialect. From the data, the researcher found the similarities of vocabularies used between Simarasok sub-dialect and Padang Tarok sub-dialect. The differences or the lexical variation that found in Simarasok sub-dialect and Padang Tarok sub-dialect are caused by the affixation, derivation, borrowing from other languages and blending. From this paper the researcher hope that this paper can be useful in learning as an additional knowledge in learning Dialectology.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze multimodal in Samsung Galaxy S9 audiovisual advertisement. The systemic functional linguistics theory by Halliday, multimodal theory by Kress and van Leeuwen and generic structure analysis theory by Cheong were applied to analyze this research. The method used in this research was a descriptive research method. The data in this research were images, texts, symbols, sounds, and gestures used in Samsung Galaxy S9 advertisement video. The source data of this research was obtained from Samsung Youtube account. The finding of this research obtained that all semiotic systems in Samsung Galaxy S9 are in harmony and complete each other. The analysis also shows that there are five generic structures found in this advertisement video; lead, display, announcement, emblem, call and visit. Meanwhile, the other structures (tag and enhancer) are not found in this advertisement.
