Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this study was to find out the tendency of slang words used in Straight Outta Compton movie and word formation processes of slang words. The type of this study was descriptive qualitative. This research used the theory of word formation processes by George Yule (2010). The researcher found 6 types of word formation in slang words in the Straight Outta Compton movie script namely coinage, blending, clipping, compounding, acronym, and multiple-process. The data of slang words collected from the movie script. This study found that the most dominant type of word formation was blending with the percentage of 29.24%. It was followed by coinage and clipping with a proportion of 26.16% and 24.65% respectively. Then, it was followed by compounding with a percentage of 13.84%. Acronym and multiple-process were the least dominant ones with a percentage of only 3.07%. Keywords: Language Style, Slang word, Word Formation

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research is to find out the types and the functions of associative meaning in the opening statements used by the host of Mata Najwa Talk Show. This research uses descriptive qualitative research as the research method. Data of the research are words, phrases, and sentences that contain associative meaning. This research uses the theory conducted by Leech (1974) to find out the types of associative meaning, and the theory proposed by Searle (1979) to find out the functions of associative meaning. The result shows that the types of associative meaning in this research are connotative meaning (25 data), stylistic meaning (1 data), affective meaning (5 data), reflected (21 data), and collocative meaning (0 data). This research also find out the functions of associative meaning; connotative meaning is used to assert the hearer about the speaker’s ideas; stylistic meaning is used to show the expression of the speaker, expressed through the style of the use of words, affective meaning is used to express the feeling of the speaker; reflected meaning is used to present the new sense of word. The function of associative meaning in this research mostly used as representative. Key words: Associative Meaning, Opening Statement, Talk Show.

Abstract

Tawa tasapo is one of the examples of oral tradition that persists in traditional medicine in Solok Regency. This research aimed to see linguistics meaning of language in tawa tasapo. The analysis was done by the application of Leech theory of meaning that divide meaning into seven types of meaning: conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflective, collocative, and thematic meaning. This research used descriptive-qualitative method with simple mathematic to determine the finding of this research. After analyzing the data, it was found that connotative meaning and social meaning as the dominant used in this research. The result was influenced by Minangkabau and Islam culture.

Abstract

 In an effective and efficient communication, speakers and listeners are required to work together to build a good conversation by considering the principles proposed by HP Grice in 1975. He categorizes the maxim into four types, namely maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. This paper tries to find out the maxim violations and characters’ reason to violate it in situational comedy “The Big Bang Theory Season 11”. Qualitative method was used for this research. The result shows that there were 140 violated utterances found in 336 scenes from 12 episodes: violation of maxim quantity (31.4%), violation of maxim quality (17.1%), violation of maxim relation (27.8%), violation of maxim of manner (20%), and multiple maxim violation (3.5%). Also, the researcher found that some indicators to identify the reason of maxim violation based on the guidelines from Tupan and Natalia (2008) and Christoffersen (2005) were not found such as avoiding to hurt the hearer, building one’s believe, and convincing the hearer (violation of maxim quality), Do the wrong causality (violation of maxim relation), and voice is not loud enough (violation of maxim manner).Key words: Maxim Violation, Sitcom TBBT

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the errors made by the third year English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang in translating a narrative text from English into bahasa Indonesia. This study used a descriptive method. The data were the translation of the narrative text entitled Snow White done by the third year English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The data were collected using a test and were analyzed using the error analysis. The results of the study indicate semantic error is the error frequently committed by the students in their translation with the frequency of 72 times (59%). Pragmatic error (29%) is the second most frequent error, while morphological error and syntactical error are seldom found in the students’ translation. In conclusion, the errors made by the students are mainly motivated by their tendency to follow the meaning of the dictionary (word for word translation).

Abstract

This research studies about directive speech acts in Big Hero 6 movie. The objectives of this research are to know the kinds of directive speech acts and the kinds of politeness strategies. The researcher takes the data from the movie entitled Big Hero 6. This research is a qualitative research by employing descriptive method. The result tends to focus on the deep meaning of the dialogue’s quality rather than the quantity of number. The data of this research are taken from directive speech acts in dialogues in the movie. The instrument of this research is the reseacher herself who collects, analyzes, and presents the data findings of the researchthen draw the conclusion. The researcher applied the trustworthiness of the data to obtain the valid data. The result of the analysis shows four kinds of directive speech acts uttered in Big Hero 6 movie. There are 34 data (42.5%) belongs to ordering,21 data (26.25%) belong to request,20 data  (25%) belong to asking,5 data (6.25%) belong to suggesting. The kinds of politeness strategies in Big Hero 6 movie are positive politeness strategy and bald on record strategy. There are 26 data (32.5%) belongs to the positive politeness strategy,54 data (67.5%) belong to bald on record strategy.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze Ariana Grande‟s song lyrics in the album “Sweetener”. This study used a descriptive research method. The result of word formation used in song lyrics showed that there is one word formation process of the borrowing type. In the second aspect, the word formation of the coinage process appears two data. In the third aspect, the word formation of the compounding process appears five data. In the fourth aspect, the word formation of the mixing process appears seven data. In the fifth aspect, the word formation of the clipping process appears three data. In the eighth aspect, the word formation of the inflection process appears five as in compounding and the last, the word formation of derivation appears six data.

Abstract

Human use language in their interaction in daily life to convey or deliver their thoughts and communicate with each other. This research belonged to the descriptive qualitative research to find out ecolexicons and the description of each ecolexicon based on the knowledge of community in Nagari Gunuang using triple dimension of social praxis. Based on data analysis and discussion found 30 words belonged to ecolexicons. Afterward, the data were classified into three categories biotic flora, biotic fauna, and abiotic. The researcher found 28 biotic lexicons, 22 of them are categorized as flora lexicons and 6 of them are categorized as fauna lexicons. On the other hand, abiotic lexicon was found only 2 by the researcher. Lexicons about biotic flora are considered as the most dominant type of ecolexicons that found. Among 22 biotic flora lexicons, 4 of them are classified as death words because it no longer used in daily life and unrecognized by the informant or society.
