Abstract

This study aims to, 1) show the similarities and  differences between language style used by Jimmy Kimmel and Wendy Williams in the level of ideational  metafunction, 2) show the similarities and different language styles used by Jimmy Kimmel and Wendy Williams in the level of interpersonal metafunction,3) show the similarities and differences of language styles used by Jimmy Kimmel and Wendy Williams in the level of textual metafunction. The objects of this research are eight talk show videos. Four videos from man presenter and four videos from a woman presenter of talk show. The result of this research show four similarities and three differences between two speakers in level Ideational metafunction. In Interpersonal metafunction there are six similarities and three differences. Then, there are two similarities and three differences between both speakers in textual metafunction. The conclusion of this study there are more similarities rather then differencies, and the differences in style are affected by different gender which are pepresented through speech and lead to the different ways of producing and selection of word in the three level of metafunction.

Abstract

This study aims to compare language style from stand-up comedian through three level of metafunction. The objects of this research are eight videos, four from each of them on youtube videos.. This study is comperative qualitative with the presence of tables to show the comparison. The result show that they share three similarities and two differences in level Ideational metafunction. In Interpersonal metafunction there are five similarities and four differences. Then, there are four similarities between Daliso and Elon and there are two differencies in textual metafunction. The conclusion of this study there are more similarities rather then differencies, and the differences in style are affected by different cultural ethnic background which are pepresented through speech and lead to the different ways of producing and selection of word in the three level of metafunction.

Abstract

Translation is an activity that plays a very important role in acquiring information that comes from a foreign language. In translating a text, every translator will certainly encounter several problems such as vocabulary, grammar, and culture in the target language (TL). One of the ways to solve such problem is using translation techniques, and different problems need different techniques. this study is aimed at: finding out the techniques used by the third year English Department students in translating a narrative text from English into bahasa Indonesia. Based on the results of data analysis, it was found that the translation of narrative text entitled “Snow White” from English into bahasa Indonesia done by the third year students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang uses nine translation techniques. They are literal translation, established equivalent, discursive creation, amplification, generalization, adaptation, borrowing, modulation, and linguistic compression.

Abstract

This paper aims at describing syntactical stylistic devices used in the poems published in Hello magazine. This study was conducted using a content analysis method. Five editions of Hello magazine published from February 2010 to December 2010 were taken as the source of data. Based on the data analysis, the poems in Hello magazine use seven types of syntactical stylistic devices, they are inversion, parallelism, climax, repetition, asyndenton, rhetorical question, and question in narrative. The syntactical stylistic device mostly used by the writers of the poems published in Hello magazine is parallelism and the least frequent devices used are climax and question in narrative. By using parallelism in poems, the writer is able to catch reader’s attention to focus on the content of the poem.

Abstract

This research paper is entitled “An Analysis of Slang Word in Song Lyrics Eminem on Album  Kamikaze.” This study was intended to find out the slang words that appear in the lyrics of the song of Eminem and classification of slang words in song lyrics of Eminem on album Kamikaze. The method of the research was qualitative descriptive method. The research got the data from transcript, which was from the internet. The writer uses transcript of this song as his main sources, the sources of data are 5 transcripts of the lyrics of the song by Eminem. Data obtained from the data collection through reading and comprehending the lyrics, the data were analyzed based on the theories of word formation proposed by Yule (2006). Based on the data analysis, it was found that there are 4 out of 9 types of word. They are (1) Coinage, (2) Compounding, (3) Blending, (4) Clipping, (5) Converstion, (6) Acronym, (7) Derivation, (8) Back-formation, and (9) Multiple Processes. Among the 4 types of word formation found, the type of word formation most frequently used in Eminem song lyrics on album Kamikaze is clipping with the frequency of 50 data (84%). This finding shows that Eminem in song lyrics mostly used clipping to make the rhyme and beat balance.
