Abstract

The prevalence of children aged 10-17 years who work in East Java is around 4.74%. About 28.03% of children who work are still in school. Whereas school dropouts reach 11.28%. Referring to the theory of collective model and using the method of multinomial logit regression analysis on the Intercensal Population Survey (SUPAS) data in 2015, this paper concludes that culture proxied through tlatah had a significant effect. Children who come from Arek tlatah are most likely to work. Children from the Pandalungan tlatah are the least likely to go to school. While children from Madura Pulau tlatah are most likely to go to school while working.. Interestingly, if maternal education is equal or even higher than that of fathers, children's participation in work increases and conversely the participation of school children actually decreases.

Abstract

Differences in economic opportunity, such as the difference between interregional wage gaps triggered the migration of workers to areas with higher wage rates, as happened in Gerbangkertosusila Area, East Java. In addition to economic factors such as wages, educational factor, age, marital status, unemployment and population number in many theories are also expressed to influence the tendency to migrate. On the other hand the denser urban area gives rise to commuting. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of individual and regional characteristics on labor migration in Gerbangkertosusila Area. Using multilevel binary logistic regression, the findings show that the variables significantly affecting commuting decision are age, marital status, secondary and higher education, wage gap and open unemployment rate. Furthermore, workers with a hingher tendency to commute are workers with individual characteristics of male, young, unmarried, highly educated, and self-employed, and with regional characteristics of smaller wage gap, higher open unemployment rate in the origin, and lower population on destination.

Abstract

This study analyzed the factors affecting the propensity internal migration of Indonesian elderly based on age classification of the elderly, i.e., young elderly, middle elderly, or old elderly. It used multinomial logit model that explored the affect of interaction between internal and external factors on elderly migration. This model was chosen beacuse the dependent variable had polichotomous scale, nominal or ordinal scale with more than two categories. The estimation results indicated the migration propensity of the elderly affected to internal factors, i.e., gender, health, education, employment status, and presence spouse. Meanwhile, external factors, that is, social protection does not affect to the elderly migration. Furthermore, the young women elderly migrants with good health and education background, still working, and lives with their spouse would have a higher propensity to migrate. Instead, these results differed for middle and old elderly migrants.
