Abstract

This research was to figure out the students’ ways of increasing vocabularies to support language skills of fifth semester students of Radya Binatama Broadcasting Academy Yogyakarta. Class activities were insufficient for each student to learn maximally. This hindrance made some students to be more creative in learning vocabularies to support their language skills of English. The study was categorized as descriptive qualitative research. The writer used documentation, observation, in-depth interview, data triangulation and open-questionnaire methods. To analyze the data, the writer used constant comparative study. The results were as follows: first, the students increased vocabularies through listening from news and interview programs on TV and radio, music and films from their private collections such as CD, DVD, cassette or learning from the family member. Second, they increased vocabularies through reading from text, book, novel, newspaper and film/ song text. Third, they increased vocabularies through speaking by oral repeating from song and film, taking part in debating activities or competitions, making conversation in working place or in the organization, and delivering speech. Fourth, they developed vocabularies from writing via emails, composing story, writing articles and diary. Fifth, in translation, they used both internet because of the time efficiency and also dictionary. Keywords: increasing vocabularies, students, language skills

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is one of the goals of language learning. Vocabulary is very important because it is one of the most functional language elements needed to perform communication. This paper reports a case study on vocabulary learning by a group of adult students learning English in two different universities. The objective of this research is to describe the profile of the vocabulary learning of the ten best vocabulary masters in two private universities. The research involved 5 students from STMIK Amikom and 5 students from ABA Sinema; both are in Yogyakarta. Those participants were chosen based three criteria; their cognitive, affective and psychomotor factors. The findings show that the masters develope varying degree of their receptive as well as the productive skills; second, the masters learn from authentic material because it is more effective; third, in order to produce a better translation, the vocabulary masters review results of their internet-based translation due to their lack of grammatical use.

Abstract

This research was to describe the autonomous learning of the ten best students of STMIK Amikom and AKBA Sinema Yogyakarta. Big classes were not sufficient for everyone to learn maximally. Abstract

The purpose of organizing English training for tour guides in Jagalan Tourism Village, Yogyakarta is to improve the English language skills of Pokdarwis tourism partners so that they can provide services to foreign tourists well which will directly support the progress of the tourism village. In this activity, the stages of service activities begin from proposing and identifying problems, preparation, socialization, implementation of activities and the implementation and evaluation of activities. In the implementation of this training, English practice and learning methods are applied. The training methods provided are interactive games, speaking, listening, writing and roleplay aimed at improving the participants' English skills. Interactive games provide participants with the opportunity to learn English in a fun way which is expected to have a positive impact on participants' desire and motivation to remain consistent in learning English. Training with the simultaneous application of speaking, listening, and writing skills could develop the trainees' English skills efficiently. These language skills are needed for professionals such as tour guides. Weaknesses or limitations in the vocabulary of the trainees can be targeted by researchers and community service teams to develop a more specific approach to improving English vocabulary mastery. This approach will benefit the English language skills of the tour guide in Jagalan Tourism Village

Abstract

This research aims to identify the learning strategies used to improve English speaking skills by Informatics students of Universitas Amikom Yogyakarta. The necessity of studying speaking skills has been highlighted by a lot of researchers in recent years. This research used questionnaires of Language Learning Strategies (SLL) to collect the data. The research respondents were 22 students of the academic year 2023/2024 from an international class of Informatics Study Program, Faculty of Computer Science. They were divided into three categories; seven students with high English speaking skills, eight students with medium English speaking skills, and seven students with low English speaking skills. This study employs a quantitative research method with a Linear Regression Analysis to explore the learning strategies used to improve speaking skills among Informatics students. The strategies are divided into 6: Affective Strategy, Cognitive Strategy, Social Strategy, Meta-Cognitive Strategy, Memory Strategy and Compensation Strategy. The result showed that students with high speaking skills implement the social strategy. It gives high influence to the success of their speaking skills. The students from medium level use the cognitive strategy. Whereas the students with low speaking skills also implement the cognitive strategy but in low frequency.
