Abstract

Abstract - In contemporary architecture, the practice of assimilating and reinterpreting traditional philosophies in recent architectural works are experiencing a surge. Traditional architecture of the past are conserved in present-day time, and is considered a development of traditional concepts with advanced technology. In spite of these progressions, the advent of modern architecture replaces the craftsmanship of local designs, such as the simplification of structural elements and ornaments. These conservation efforts are sometimes done without any care for the philosophical aspect of traditional forms, only imitating the physical aspects. This research aims to discover Javanese cultural forms embedded in Said Naum Mosque, and the preservation methods used. Specific attributes to be researched further are the structural and construction systems. Qualitative methods are used to elaborate the structure and construction system of Said Naum Mosque, and identification of the Javanese cultural forms. The mosque is then compared to other Javanese mosques to break down the similarities and differences. The end result of the research uncovers the Javanese culture preserved in the structure and construction system in the form of artefacts, activities, and ideas. Conservation methods taken are adapting and preserving of the cultural forms. Adaptation of Javanese artefacts in the physical attributes of Said Naum Mosque were found, where the architect’s reinterpretations such as the removal of soko guru and the innovation of tajug are done in accordance to make use of newer, more modern materials such as concrete and steel. Activities are mostly preserved, considering the function did not stray much from the Javaneses’ piety and social relations. The forms of ideas and concepts underwent both adaptations and preservations, where adaptations happen as a more modern movement in structural and spatial, while preserving the Javanese people’s characters; understanding of each other and consideration for the nature. The research concludes that Said Naum Mosque’s structural and construction aspects have underwent an extensive adaptation process, but still yielded an architectural product that conserved the culture of Java. This is especially evident in the structural order which follows the Javanese concepts of verticality and the honest, as-is nature of Javanese structural expressions. Abstract

Abstract: This paper aims to describe the physical elements of the lobby architecture - the Royal Pita Maha resort restaurant, and furthermore to reveal the meaning of Balinese culture. According to its method, the architectural object is expressed as 'physical existence', subsequently 'aspects of purpose', and finally 'essence' in the form of Balinese cultural meaning. The shape of the resort gate is the result of re-interpretation and improvisation of the past Puri Ubud gate. The lobby architecture is the result of re-interpretation and improvisation of the Balinese traditional public building with modern construction, manifesting the harmony of past-present life. The roof is more special than the others, representing the 'three layers of nature' in Balinese culture, open space and utilizing local resources referring to the 'harmonies of nature'. The layout of the continuous lobby - restaurant towards the South - North is adapted to the condition of the original land and utilizes local natural resources, standing for 'harmonies of local nature'. The re-interpretation of Balinese Traditional communal public building architecture with modern construction patterns means 'harmony of life' between the past and present. Once again, the roof is more outstanding than the other parts, referring to the 'three layers of nature.Keyword: Balinese culture, meaning, harmony.

Abstract

Abstract: Garut Station, inaugurated on August 14, 1889, has undergone various historical transformations, including its destruction in 1947 and revitalization in 2022. The existence of this building as a cultural heritage is important for preserving the character of local architecture amidst the unplanned urban development. This study aims to identify the architectural characteristics of the old Garut Station building, focusing on the components that make up its facade. The research method used is qualitative descriptive, involving field observations and literature studies. The data obtained are reconstructed into a three-dimensional model to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the facade components, including the entrance, walls, doors, windows, roof, signage, and ornaments. The results of the study indicate that the Garut Station, rebuilt in 1949, represents a modern colonial architectural style characterized by symmetrical buildings and sloped roofs. The influence of Art Deco is also evident in the geometric details of the building's facade elements.

Abstract

Bali's Sanur tourism sector is home to many well-known structures with unique, non-Balinese architectural styles. This paper aims to expose the Balinese physical-meaning system found in the Three Monkeys restaurant's architecture in Sanur. The approach is descriptive; first, the "physical" architecture is explained, followed by the "purpose of existence" and "essence." Open frontage, bottom level raised over the terrace, and an alang-alang roof supported by bamboo poles. There is an open figure to the left and north, with bamboo trees around it and a glass-block wall atop. a blend of Balinese traditional and modern architecture. The arrangement: an open pool acts as a mediator between the dining room, kitchen, and bathroom; the terrace is shaded by frangipani trees, and there is a place of prayer in the northeast corner. The upper rooms are conditioned, enclosed by glass walls, modern compared to the lower rooms. The terrace materials are traditional (alang-alang roof, parasol stone wall - bamboo), the lower dining room is a mix of traditional (bamboo wall, alang-alang roof, wooden furniture) and modern (polished concrete floor, glass-block wall), and the upper room is modern (frameless glass wall, stainless-steel railing). The traditional-modern Balinese blend is displayed through the building's figure, layout and materials.
