Abstract

Abstract

The utilization of daylighting as an effort to reduce the usage of building energy needs to be optimized. This is because, low-rise buildings with large volumes require specific strategies for proper light distribution throughout the space. Hence, this study aims to explore and compare the effectiveness of daylighting in the openings design of skylight, roof monitor, and sawtooth in large-volume buildings in Bandung. The effectiveness is assessed by examining lighting performance based on distribution patterns, the value of Daylight Factor (DF), and the Coefficient of Uniformity (CU). Experimental research method with simulation program known as Velux Daylight Visualizer 3.0 is used to present and analyze the lighting data. The results showed that the type, position (openings' height and distance), as well as the opening direction affected the distribution patterns and daylighting performance. Based on the simulation, the skylight opening is the most effective in meeting the standard value of Daylight Factor (> 2%) and Coefficient of Uniformity (CU min. 0.3 and DF min. 0.8%). Thus, space and openings model with a percentage roof area of 16.3% in the simulation can be used as a reference for large-volume buildings because, it meets the requirements of Daylight Factor value and sufficient Coefficient of Uniformity.

Abstract

The interpretation differences of the policies implemented by the Second Vatican Council have a significant influence on the increasingly diverse views and manifestations of the sacred expressions in the Catholic Church. Therefore, this research focuses on the sacred expression of the Sanctuary as the most important space of the Catholic Church. It was carried out at St. Laurentius Catholic Church Bandung because it applies various artificial lighting techniques to its worship space. Furthermore, this research discusses how and to what extent artificial lighting techniques are able to support the sacred expression of the contemporary Catholic Church Sanctuary. Data were quantitatively collected through working drawings, measuring the illumination level in the work area, and determining the brightness of space-forming materials. Meanwhile, data were also qualitatively collected through field observations and visual recordings. The analysis process was used to analyze the architectural sacredness, such as orientation, hierarchy, balance, and symbols. In addition, visual analysis was used for clarity, uniformity, balance, brightness, and spatial intimacy. The results showed that artificial lighting techniques play a significant role in forming sacred expressions of the Sanctuary of the St. Laurentius Catholic Church Bandung.

Abstract

One of the biggest contributors to energy usage are built infrastructures (up to 40%). Minimizing energy usage efficiently could reduce cost and give a better impact on the environment in terms of sustainability. As a tropical country that experiences sun exposure throughout the year, designing a building in Indonesia needs to respond to the impact of solar radiation inside the room for comfort and energy-saving effort. In addition, the topography of the site is considered throughout the process of designing a building, in which the site is located on sloped terrain (with a slant of 15 degrees celsius) and may influence the orientation and shape as it affects access to sunlight and view. This paper aims to identify which building orientation and shape of a project have the least energy usage during its preliminary phase on sloped terrains in tropical climate areas. 3 different building orientations (west-east, combination, North-east – South-west) and shapes are analyzed through experimental method by utilizing Sefaira as a plugin to Sketchup software using ASHRAE 90.1 - 2019 (ZONE 2) as material standard for the analysis. This research focuses on how a sloped site, as well as climate, affects building efficiency and how the orientation and shape of the building affect the building’s energy consumption. Difference in characteristics of the land, preferably regarding flat or sloped terrain lands, does not guarantee whether the energy usage will change, but it shows that sloped terrain sites could benefit on reducing the cooling load of a building as well as daylighting.

Abstract

Title: Space and Lighting Design to Support Contemplation Atmosphere in Regina Caeli Catholic Church, Jakarta The study examines how the light and space in the Church of Regina Caeli able to reinforce the presence of God?s impression and support contemplation?s atmosphere. The discussion reviewed by spatial elements (lobby/narthex, pulpit/nave, and sanctuary/chancel), enclosure elements (floors, walls, ceilings), and interior elements (furniture, decoration, and symbols). The lighting aspects explored are physical aspect (light source, technique, light distribution, colour, and level of light) and perception aspect (psychology of light). The study shows that the lighting support contemplation by emphasizing the sacred-secular space?s transition and strengthen the sacred space?s orientation. The contemplation is weakened due to the excessive number of liturgical symbols that blurring the people?s focus. As a pluriform church, Regina Caeli applying the combined effect of vertical and horizontal shape and space, but the lighting only emphasizes the horizontal effect that caused the impression of a church that is humane.

Abstract

Abstract - Multi-story row buildings such as shophouses have problems in accommodating the need for natural lighting due to the linear typology of the building, limitations in making side openings, and consisting of two or more floors. This typology of buildings results in an uneven distribution of light, especially in the middle to the back of the building and on floors other than the top floor. One effort to incorporate natural light or daylight into the elongated shophouse building is to use top lighting. However, the existence of the top lighting does not allowing light to reach the floor other than the top floor of the shophouse due to the obstruction of the floor surface.Transparent materials such as glass allow higher light transmission than opaque materials, so using glass materials can increase the illumination of the space behind the glass. The purpose of this study was to assess the suitability of the illumination level in Ruko Gaia's natural lighting design to the values of Daylight Factor (DF), Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA), and Annual Sunlight Exposure (aSE) according to the BREEAM and IES LM-83-12 standards, to examine the effect of changing the position of the stair-skylight and the use of transparent materials on the floor-stairs plane to the illumination level, as well as optimizing the design to increase the DF value according to the standards used. The research begins by evaluating the illumination level of Ruko Gaia’s natural lighting design. By conducting alternative simulations, an assessment will be made to see the effect of changing the position of the skylight-stairs and the use of transparent materials on the floor-stairs plane to the building’s illumination level. If the resulting illumination level has not reached the specified standard, optimization is carried out by increasing the Visible Transmittance value or adding skylight dimensions. The method used is quantitative in the form of evaluation of planning designs and alternative simulations. The theories and data for the Ruko Gaia were collected from literature studies, websites, brochures, and property agents, as well as simulation data processing with SketchUp and Lightstanza software. Based on the evaluation, the illumination level at the Ruko Gaia has not met the BREEAM standard of the DF value in overcast sky conditions, especially on the ground floor. Various alternative studies have concluded that although increasing the DF value, changing the position of the skylights and the use of transparent floors have not resulted in the DF value according to the BREEAM standard. Optimization of the DF value can be achieved by increasing the VLT value or increasing the dimensions of the skylight.
