Abstract

Abstract

Abstract- Museum as an architectural object with its function as an educational and recreational facility is open to public and must be able to be used by all people. Therefore, the design of museums must be accessible for all people, including those with special needs. One of the museums in Indonesia which is considered to be a good work of architecture is the Museum of Bank Indonesia. It receives many visitors from various circles, including people with visual impairments. To accommodate visitors with visual impairments, the Museum of Bank Indonesia must have design features that help them to do activities, despite their limited sense of sight. Through this study, the research aims to find out how physical elements in the Museum of Bank Indonesia accommodates the orientation and mobility of visitors with visual impairments. This is a qualitative research, with a descriptive discussion. The collected data are the data on physical elements in the Museum of Bank Indonesia and the data on the behavior of visually impaired visitors while doing orientation and mobility in the Museum of Bank Indonesia exhibition area. The data are collected through observation and interview, then analyzed by using a table which elaborates physical elements from technical requirements aspect and sensory design aspect, and how they accommodate visually impaired visitors. Research shows that some physical elements in the Museum of Bank Indonesia are already adequate in accommodating visually impaired visitors. They able to provide assistance for visually impaired visitors while doing orientation and mobility, as well as gathering information on the museum objects. On the other hand, there are also some physical elements that hinder visually impaired visitors because they don’t technically meet the user’s needs. Therefore, improvement in the physical elements design is needed, so it can accommodate visitors with visual impairments better. Abstract

Abstract - Visual impairment is a term given to someone who does not have healthy vision. To fulfill their daily life needs, people with visual impairment tend to depend on the facilities in public open spaces. Accessibility that should support people with visual impairment in using public transportation facilities is often poorly maintained. This kind of condition could lead to fatal consequences to the safety of persons with disabilities. Options linked to accessing public open spaces for people with visual impairment become limited due to the lack of facilities. The refurbishment has been done at Tanah Abang Station by providing a transit plaza for users that is connected to various public transportation facilities, which enables easy and comfortable navigation. This has become an opportunity, to build better public facilities that are accessible to all users, including for people with visual impairment. Through this effort, the transit plaza should be able to serve as a public space that is beneficial for people with visual impairment, so there are more possibilities to ensure their quality of life. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which the transit plaza can provide accessibility for people with visual impairment. The method used is qualitative and data collection was carried out through literature studies, field surveys as well as interviews and simulations with people with visual impairment. The results conclude that the accessibility value referring to technical requirements indicates that the transit plaza sufficiently complies with accessibility standards regarding public open spaces. This value is compared to the experience of people with visual impairment . This study found that there are some differences from the aspect of convenience according to the people with visual impairment's point of view. The mobility in the transit plaza is considered easy and safe by people with visual impairment. When they had to determine direction or orientation, people with visual impairment who were not familiar with transit plaza still had difficulties to navigate independently. When facing these situations, blind people adapted by relying on abilities other than their sight as an alternative. Transit plaza could provide universal convenience for users by accommodate accessibility that can not only encourage the independence of the people with visual impairment, but also support comfort and safety of individuals without visual impairment. Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced daily activities, including educational activities, to prevent or minimize the transmission or spread of the disease caused by a coronavirus. Online architecture education demands significant adjustments in the embedded learning methods, especially those that entail architecture design studio. An architecture design studio that commonly involves direct interaction in physical spaces should be performed through online media and computer screens. Architecture students' comprehension of site or design contexts is usually formed by collecting information through on-site observation.  In an online architecture design studio, an on-site survey is replaced by observing visual representation of the site. This study aims to identify how well architecture students in architecture design studios can comprehend the site when they have to rely on data acquired from virtual observation and/or on secondary data and how beneficial the comprehension to their design process is. Students' understanding of the site was measured with thirteen attributes of the site. It can be concluded that when architecture students depend on mere audio and/or visual data collected from the internet and/or other people, without visiting the site, they tend to have partial comprehension regarding the site as context. Contextual and responsive design demands a comprehensive understanding of all attributes of the site. The architecture design studio should incorporate on-site observation concerning the site according to the health protocol, so that the architecture students involved in the studio can have a better understanding of the site and create more contextual and responsive designs

Abstract

Abstract - St. Gabriel's Church is the house of God and a place for Catholics to worship Him. St. Gabriel Catholic Church has a concept that prioritizes the relationship between human and God; between human and other people; and between human and the environment. Spatial comfort is an important factor in supporting the atmosphere of worship, therefore St. Gabriel Church strengthens the concepts with the application of passive and ecological design. The concept is applied through transparency and openness of large church buildings to the environment, to optimize natural lighting and air conditioning. This makes the physical form of St. Gabriel Church looks different from the Catholic Church in general, which is relatively closed with limited openings, to minimize noise disturbances from outside in order to form a more sacred atmosphere of worship. The experience of the room in the church will affect the atmosphere of worship and the experience of spirituality of the congregation when carrying out worship activities. The atmosphere and use of space are not only perceived through visual sense, but also through auditory and olfactory sense. Therefore, this research is interesting to be conducted, in order to understand how a design opening in a sacred building can effecting the congregation’s sense of sacred space. This study applies qualitative – descriptive approaches. The data was collected by field observation, literature studies, and disseminating questionnaires to church congregations. The data is analyzed in accordance with the theoretical studies used and also from the results of questionnaires regarding the sense of sacred space of the congregation concerning the design of openings at St. Gabriel's Church. The results showed that the sense of sacred space of the congregation can be formed, with a calm and conducive atmosphere of worship space. The building openings have an important role in shaping that atmosphere. Therefore, it can be concluded that the visual and audial quality resulting from the openings, whereas their role as role as an audio – visuals buffer are greater than the role as a light filter, will create congregations’ sense of sacred space in the St. Gabriel’s Church. Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused drastic changes in everyday life in Indonesia, including Muslim religious activities facilitated by mosques. A mosque is intended to accommodate all worshipping activities that can provide benefits not only for congregants performing activities within, but also for communities and the environment around the mosque. One thing that remains constant in terms of the main functions of mosques is the accommodation of praying (salat) activities. In the times of Covid-19 pandemic, the implementation of rules concerning compulsory congregational prayers should be adjusted according to health protocols to minimize the spread of the coronavirus, especially the parts related to interpersonal space between individuals. This study intends to capture the dynamics of perception regarding interpersonal spaces according to congregants performing congregational prayers in the mosque. This study applies behavior mapping and questionnaire to collect data concerning the dynamics of perception regarding interpersonal spaces from Salman Mosque in Bandung. This study identifies the difference, in terms of congregational prayers, between how congregants perceive their interpersonal space differs from how they apply interpersonal distance. The difference is mostly influenced by self-interpretation concerning religious and/or government rules rather than total compliance to religious leaders and/or government instructions.

Abstract

During the pandemic in early 2022, some Muslim congregants chose to close ranks while others kept their distance during prayers and non-ritual activities. Therefore, the aim of this research is to determine the behavior patterns of congregants during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically at the Great Mosque of Al-Ukhuwwah-Bandung in West Java. The method used involves (1) mapping techniques to observe the congregants' behavior, (2) distributing questionnaires to validate their comfort level with interpersonal space and adherence to health protocols, (3) analyzing the questionnaire results, and (4) drawing conclusions based on the observed behavior patterns and questionnaire analysis results. The research shows that during the Omicron period, the congregants tended to revert to their pre-pandemic behavior patterns, with intimate and personal distance being dominant during ritual and non-ritual activities, respectively. However, the questionnaire results suggest that congregants still adhere to social distancing protocols during activities in the mosque, despite implementing health protocols.

Abstract

The Republic of Indonesia's Ministry of Religion reports more than 700,000 mosques in the country. Insufficient research has been conducted concerning this mosque-turned-building, particularly regarding how it may help the country accomplish its environmental commitments. The Istiqlal mosque received a green building assessment certificate (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiency) from the International Finance Corporation in April 2022. This certificate should serve as a foundation for future research into the distinctive features of mosque building designs in Indonesia and their potential to contribute to accomplishing national environmental targets. Mosque buildings as an embodiment of the concept of Rahmatan Lil Alamin or mercy for all of nature should be in line with the concept of green buildings which strive to preserve nature. This research aims to determine the challenges of implementing the green building concept in mosque buildings with a case study of two mosques in the city of Bandung. To identify their traits, this study employed observational methods, case studies, and interviews with mosque managers. The Minister of Public Works Regulation Number 21 of 2021 about Green Building Performance Assessment will be employed to examine and assess the gathered data. The outcomes demonstrate that the low-performance value persists. Considerable work is required to achieve the desired results. In-depth talks with stakeholders are also required to map the distinctive qualities of mosque structures and identify methods in which they can support the realization of national environmental preservation objectives while also exemplifying the principles of Rahmatan lil Alamin.

Abstract

Reformed Christianity is one of the Protestant denominational branches in Indonesia. The Reformed tradition exhibits distinct theological and liturgical characteristics compared to other Christian denominations. Consequently, architectural design must accommodate Reformed theological concepts while supporting its liturgical practices and doctrinal views. Although Reformed churches share a unified theological belief, their architectural forms vary significantly, influencing the sacred atmosphere within these spaces. In 2024, the Gereja Reformed Injili Indonesia (GRII) in Bandung inaugurated a new church building. Preliminary observations indicate that this church's architectural design diverges from typical Reformed churches, impacting the spatial ambiance. This study focuses on the relationship between the sacred atmosphere and the architectural design of Reformed churches, specifically examining the new GRII Bandung church. The research investigates the connection between the sacred ambiance and the architectural design of the GRII Bandung church. It seeks to provide insights for the academic community, contributing to theories and concepts related to church architecture in general and Reformed church architecture in particular. The findings are anticipated to offer alternative design approaches for Reformed churches and provide valuable input for church management policies. Ultimately, this study aims to lay the groundwork for more comprehensive future research in this area.
