Abstract

This study discusses the emerged language teaching methodologies practiced in Engineering Fields. There are many methods applied in teaching language. However, the needs of technical fields in English learning, especially for workforce, academic and social demand, seemed to have appropriate treatment. Career choice has given a great impact influencing the study of English language. In addition, there are specific needs in the engineering workplace that are inevitably used by engineers to correspond with their colleagues or customers. This situation leads to some thought in English for specific purpose practices. Recently, there are two teaching methodologies adjusted for the needs of technical school students that are being studied. First, Corpus linguistics: the lexical approach has been mostly practiced before. Innovated by data-driven corpus, this methodology arises as to the new common method applied in the engineering area. Second, Dialogic Pedagogy: the thought of dialogism is grounded by the sociocultural theory that considers learning as a social act. Social engagement is believed in improving one’s ability to be a decider and problem solver. Through dialogic pedagogies, students learn to eliminate some problems related to language barriers, such as the anxiety to speak English and apprehensiveness in making mistakes.

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic impacts on vocational education. Lectures that were originally conducted face-to-face learning are diverted to online learning to avoid the spread of the pandemic. Online learning is very difficult to apply for courses conducted in the laboratory. This study discusses vocational students’ responses to the practice of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected through a questionnaire created on Google form consisting of 20 questions. The questionnaire used a Likert scale to find out the attitudes and students’ perceptions of the implementation of online learning. The number of research respondents was 107 people consisting of 45 respondents from the West Aceh State Community Academy and 62 respondents from Lhokseumawe State Polytechnic, Aceh, Indonesia. The results of this study found that 59.81% of students disagree with online learning. The results also showed a score of 76.95% of the students agree that internet access is the main obstacle in online learning. However, students’ satisfaction with the current online learning system for students shows a score of 67.50%. Opinions related to online learning from 107 respondents showed that 45.42% of them less agree if online learning is still applied when the COVID-19 pandemic ends.

Abstract

This study analyzes the needs of an Android-based Acehnese-Indonesian dictionary for the vocational field. The needs analysis ensures alignment with user expectations. The instrument is tested for validity and reliability, with the product-moment correlation showing an r-value higher than the table value, and Cronbach's alpha exceeding 0.6, confirming its validity and reliability. Data were collected using purposive sampling through questionnaires distributed to 100 Acehnese speakers in West Aceh, Greater Aceh, North Aceh, and Lhokseumawe. The results showed that 87% supported the development of the dictionary, 87% wanted features such as images, pronunciation, and IPA writing, 84% considered audio important, and 79% preferred technical vocabulary, category-based search, and offline access. The novelty of this study lies in its user-driven approach, integrating interactive features that are essential for vocabulary acquisition. Unlike conventional bilingual dictionaries, this study focuses on vocational terminology, preserving the Acehnese language while enhancing its practical use. High user demand and a rigorous validation process ensure that the developed instruments accurately capture user needs, laying a solid foundation for further development.
