Abstract

Considering the significance of proverbs in Abui communities in Alor island, this study aimed at 1) identifying the types of proverbs found in Abui language, 2) discovering the meaning conveyed by the proverbs and 3) investigating the functions served by the proverbs. The research employed qualitative case study by conducting the in-depth interview with five informants from West Welai Village, Teluk Mutiara Sub district, Alor Regency. The data were collected by using open ended questions. The data were then translated and transcribed to be analyzed by using thematic analysis. The findings and discussion led to three conclusions. First, there were thirty proverbs found in Abui language which consisted of twelve aphorism (40%), eleven idioms (36,67%) and seven parables (23,33%). Second, the majority of the proverbs (80%) conveyed proverbial while only six proverbs (20%) expressed idiomatic meaning. Lastly, regarding function, twelve proverbs (40%) in Abui language served as advices, nine of them showed the notion of sarcasm (30%), five proverbs gave warnings (16,67%) and the rest functioned as expressions (13,33%).

Abstract

The aims of this research are: (1) to identify the types of language interference in learning English, (2) to find out the most dominant example of the mother tongue in learning English, and (3) to investigate the causes of interference in learning English. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with selected twenty students from the seventh grade as the respondents. This research used observation, interview, recording, and note-taking, for data collection while employing document analysis to analyze the gathered data. This study was conducted in the following procedure, (1) observation (2) interview (3) documentation. From the self-introduction by the respondents, the researcher found that there were three types of language interference made by seventh-grade students namely phonological, grammatical, and lexical interference. The findings also showed that the most dominant example of the mother tongue in learning English made by seventh-grade students is phonological interference. The analysis also revealed that the causes of language interference, there were students’ background and the students’ limited mastery of the English vocabulary

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the elements that helped and hindered the implementation of English literacy programs at SMA Negeri 1 Hawu Mehara. The descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. Open-ended questionnaires, interviews, and observation are the methods utilized to collect data. Students, librarians, English teachers, and school principals are the research's data sources. Based on the data, the author examines and discusses the factors that help and impede English literacy in SMA Negeri 1 Hawu Mehara. Two factors help. 1. internal elements, such as the students' condition, interest, motivation, and mode of learning. 2. External variables, specifically the community and the parents of students. English literacy is hampered by several internal and external factors, such as low student motivation and students who spend a lot of time on social media for play rather than to promote an English-literate culture. Other external factors include government and teacher support for the implementation of English literacy programs.

Abstract

This project aims to investigate the use of video podcasts by English students at Nusa Cendana University to explore local tourism objects in Kupang City. The study focuses on the student's engagement with video podcasts as a tool for understanding and promoting local tourism. The methodology mainly involved two procedures namely field trips to different tourism objects as well as creating video podcasts for promoting the destinations to the world. Field trips are an essential part of experiential learning and creating video podcasts allows students to develop cooperation and critical thinking along the process. The findings showed that 80 students divided into small groups explored natural spots such as beaches, a cliff, and bathing places. In addition, the students also dined at several culinary attractions. Next, they experienced going to the local museum as the historical venue. The results indicated that video podcasts are an effective means for English students to explore and showcase local tourism objects in Kupang City. The discussion highlights the potential of video podcasts in enhancing English language learning and promoting tourism.
