Abstract

Research with topics like this is not new, educators usually try to find out the weaknesses of their students in terms of mastery of grammar to solve the teaching and learning problems. English study Program of FKIP, Universitas Nusa Cendana also see this as something urgent so it is very necessary to do to see and identify the weaknesses of students English Education study program in writing scientific papers (thesis) from the grammatical point of view by using the surface strategy taxonomy approach introduced by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). This research is expected to contribute to the teaching and learning process in the study program, especially for several related subjects such as Writing I, II, III, and Academic Writing. By identifying students’ problems in writing thesis proposals, educators, especially lecturers of the English Education Study Program are expected to be able to map the problems of English study program students and make them a reference for teaching.

Abstract

This paper describes and explains the essence of reference and inference as the linguistic devices forming the unity of a discourse. The material of this paper is based on secondary data collected through library research and the method of data collection was a documentary study. The results of the study show that references and inferences as the linguistic devices are two external elements forming the unity of discourse that should be taken into account when someone wants to understand and interpret the meanings of the language used in a discourse of text of discourse. As such, it is required for him/her to know in more depth about the essence of reference and inference in line with their functions and significances as the external elements forming the unity of discourse.

Abstract

Students' English speaking ability in schools in general is still low. There are various affecting factors. Some most obvious factors include limited English exposure to students in class (classroom language) and students’ motivation to learn English. English language exposure which is very important in foreign language learning is limited. Then, it is necessary to find a strategy which is potential to provide more English language exposure and motivation for students. This study aimed to examine: (1) the difference in speaking ability between students taught with the learning strategy on the bases of classroom language and those taught with conventional learning strategy; (2) the difference in speaking ability between students having high motivation and those having low motivation; (3) interaction effect of the learning strategy on the basis of classroom language and motivation to students' speaking ability. This study used a quasi-experimental research design. In particular, it employed factorial 2x2 version non-equivalent control group. The subjects were the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang, Indonesia. Two classes were randomly chosen, one as experimental group and the other as control group. Contextual learning strategy on the basis of classroom language was applied in experimental class whereas conventional learning strategy was used in control class. Data taken from both classes were then descriptively and statistically analyzed (ANOVA) using SPSS version 16.0 for windows. Results showed that (1) there was a significant difference in speaking ability between students in experimental group and those in control group. Contextual learning strategy on the basis of classroom language was more effective; (2) there was a significant difference in speaking ability between students in high motivation group and those in low motivation group. High motivation students were more successful; (3) there was no interaction effect of learning strategy based on classroom language and motivation to students' ability of speaking. Based on these results, teachers of English in general and those teaching at SMAN 5 Kupang in particular are recommended to use classroom language that provides more language exposure and motivation for students.

Abstract

The aims of this research are: (1) to identify the types of language interference in learning English, (2) to find out the most dominant example of the mother tongue in learning English, and (3) to investigate the causes of interference in learning English. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with selected twenty students from the seventh grade as the respondents. This research used observation, interview, recording, and note-taking, for data collection while employing document analysis to analyze the gathered data. This study was conducted in the following procedure, (1) observation (2) interview (3) documentation. From the self-introduction by the respondents, the researcher found that there were three types of language interference made by seventh-grade students namely phonological, grammatical, and lexical interference. The findings also showed that the most dominant example of the mother tongue in learning English made by seventh-grade students is phonological interference. The analysis also revealed that the causes of language interference, there were students’ background and the students’ limited mastery of the English vocabulary

Abstract

Penelitian kualitatif ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi guru dan siswa terhadap pengajaran dan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing (EFL) di Sumba Hospitality Foundation. Persepsi guru dan siswa EFL berperan penting dalam proses belajar mengajar maka penelitian terkait hal ini harus dilakukan dalam banyak konteks. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui bagaimana guru dan siswa memandang pengajaran dan pembelajaran EFL di lingkungan mereka berdasarkan persepsi mereka sendiri. Dua kelas bahasa Inggris (masing-masing terdiri dari 15 siswa) telah diobservasi. Dari jumlah tersebut diambil 10 siswa secara acak dan seorang guru untuk dilibatkan dalam diskusi kelompok terpumpun serta wawancara terkait proses belajar mengajar di kelas. Berdasarkan analisis kualitatif, hasil temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru dan siswa EFL memiliki sikap positif terhadap pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Kedua belah pihak pada dasarnya berpendapat bahwa bahasa Inggris sangat dibutuhkan dalam bidang studi mereka, yaitu perhotelan, karena mereka pada akhirnya harus menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa utama yang digunakan para pelancong, tidak hanya untuk memahami permintaan pelanggan tetapi juga untuk berkomunikasi. Sebagai calon staf perhotelan, siswa telah diarahkan oleh guru bahasa Inggris mereka untuk memahami pentingnya belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai mata pelajaran sekolah, dan berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris sebagai keterampilan yang dianggap penting. Pemahaman ini menggarisbawahi pentingnya inisiatif yang dapat dimulai DPR RI, khususnya Komisi X yang membidangi pendidikan dan pariwisata. Sebagai pengambil kebijakan, Komisi X harus mengetahui kondisi dan perkembangan di pusat pelatihan seperti Sumba Hospitality Foundation, khususnya mengenai praktik dan manajemen pengajaran dan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.AbstractThis qualitative study aims to discover teacher’s and students’ perceptions of teaching and learning English at Sumba Hospitality Foundation. Due to the fact that EFL teachers’ and students’ perceptions have a critical role in the teaching and learning process, more studies have to be conducted in contexts related to this issue. This study has been organized to investigate how both parties view EFL teaching and learning in their setting based on their perceptions. Two English classes (each consisting of 15 students) have been observed. Ten students were randomly chosen, and a teacher was invited to the focus group discussion (FGD) and an interview related to the teaching and learning process in the classroom. Based on the qualitative analysis,the findings indicate that both EFL teachers and students have positive attitudes toward English. Both parties recognize the urgent necessity of English within their field of study, namely hospitality, as it serves as the primary language for tourists, enabling them to comprehend customer demands and facilitate communication. As the future hospitality staff, students have been directed by their EFL teachers to understand the importance of learning English as a school subject and communicating in English as an essential communication skill. This understanding underscores the importance of initiatives spearheaded by the DPR RI, particularly Commission X, responsible for education and tourism. As policymakers, Commission X must be apprised of the conditions and developments at training centers like Sumba Hospitality Foundation, particularly regarding English teaching and learning practices and management.

Abstract

Tujuan kegiatan pelatihan peningkatan kapasitas dosen dalam persiapan akreditasi internasional FIBAA adalah untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dosen mengenai kriteria dan standar akreditasi FIBAA. Kegiatan pelatihan ini bertujuan memberikan keterampilan dalam penyusunan dokumen akreditasi yang komprehensif, serta mendorong penerapan praktik terbaik dalam pengajaran dan penelitian. Selain itu, kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat memfasilitasi diskusi dan kolaborasi antar dosen, sehingga menciptakan sinergi dalam upaya mencapai akreditasi internasional. Penyelenggaraan pengabdian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan beberapa manfaat signifikan, baik bagi para pengajar maupun bagi peserta didik. Hasil dari kegiatan pelatihan peningkatan kapasitas dosen dalam persiapan akreditasi internasional FIBAA meliputi pemahaman yang mendalam dan dosen memahami kriteria dan standar akreditasi FIBAA secara menyeluruh. Melalui serangkaian sesi yang interaktif dan informatif, dosen telah memperoleh pemahaman yang mendalam mengenai kriteria dan standar akreditasi FIBAA.

Abstract

Budaya Dawan berfungsi sebagai penanda identitas dan simbol pembeda bagi kelompok etnis Dawan. Hal ini menonjolkan rasa memiliki masyarakat sekaligus membedakannya dari kelompok etnis lain. Perwujudan utama dari budaya ini terlihat dalam praktik perkawinan tradisional mereka, yang mencerminkan struktur sosial dan nilai-nilai masyarakat Dawan. Penelitian ini berfokus pada dua bentuk utama perkawinan tradisional: perkawinan endogami, khususnya perkawinan lintas sepupu dan perkawinan antar marga. Perkawinan silang sepupu, bertujuan untuk memelihara ikatan keluarga dan memastikan warisan tetap berada dalam keluarga, berupaya memulihkan hubungan yang sebelumnya terputus oleh perkawinan sebelumnya. Sebaliknya, perkawinan antar suku, yang banyak dilakukan di kalangan Dawan, menumbuhkan jaringan kekerabatan yang lebih luas dalam satu suku. Perbedaan kedua bentuk ini terletak pada proses dan mekanismenya masing-masing. Struktur perkawinan adat Dawan yang dikenal dengan nama tamam nasako atau tamam man toet bi fe mencerminkan keunikan budaya masyarakatnya. Proses perkawinan secara sistematis dibagi menjadi tiga bagian yang saling berhubungan: lamaran (perkenalan), hantaran (bagian inti), dan tahap akhir pergantian marga. Unsur-unsur tersebut tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai validasi budaya warisan Dawan, namun juga sebagai mekanisme memperkokoh ikatan sosial dan melestarikan adat istiadat leluhur. Perkawinan adat Dawan mempunyai makna yang beragam melalui simbol-simbol verbal dan nonverbal, meliputi aspek agama, sosiologis, ekonomi, politik, sejarah, dan hukum. Selain itu, mereka mewujudkan nilai-nilai inti seperti ketuhanan, kemanusiaan, persatuan, konsensus, dan keadilan. Secara keseluruhan, perkawinan adat dalam masyarakat Dawan berperan penting dalam menjaga struktur sosial, membina hubungan, dan melestarikan norma dan nilai budaya.
