Abstract

Being a teacher in a classroom needs knowledge not only in terms of the knowledge of the subject itself but also in term of knowing how to handle the class such as leadership skill because  this skill is able to maintain students spirit or morale also requires skill so  that the students have self confident to speak English without being afraid of making mistakes and being laughed by their friends. The aim  of this paper is to analyze leadership styles available and to find out an appropriate style that can be  applied in an  English classroom. Several types ranged from  an authorization style to  democratic  to laissez faire have been viewed and analyzed. An autocratic is one in which the manager retains the decision making rights to herself, it is  task oriented, it gives orders to subordinates, and the type of communication is one-way downwards. In contrast, in a laissez-faire decision style, the manager imposes few, if any, controls on subordinates. Decisions are left to subordinates and it is they  who are the principle initiators of actions. In English  class room the situation of learning  a foreign language has been discussed. Some principles required  by a foreign language  have been mentioned. The situation required by a foreign language classroom should be relax and able to encourage students to talk or communicate using the target language. Besides the situation, learners should also be taken into consideration. The way to behave to one student as individuals is different to another. It is mostly influenced by the maturity task owned by a student and a class. By looking at the advantages and disadvantages of two extreme styles, it is suggested that there is no best style in leadership. The best is the leadership which considers situation that can build up good relationship between leader and followers.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate peer mentoring program being implemented at English Department. Some problems are identified in this study such as how it is implemented, challenges faced, and student’s perception on this program. Interviews, observation and document review are done in the area of mentoring covering concept, mentoring characteristics, its advantages and  disadvantages. The result shows that students give positive feedback to this program such as the increase of students’ engagement, academic atmosphere, communication skill and service learning. The atmosphere then motivates students to study among themselves which improve not only their intellectual ability but also their soft skill including communication, leadership and teamwork. While implementing the program, some challenges factors such as inexperienced mentors and time management makes the team not run smoothly.

Abstract

The concept of English as an international language means English is treated as a global means of communication. This concept shows that English has a various dialects influence by the first language or it refers to the array of varieties of English spoken throughout the world. Therefore the focus of having a good model in English speaking countries, but we can look around and see cultures available around us and integrate them into English language teaching. May studies have highlighted that inserting culture particularly target language culture in EFL class is necessary because language is considered as  carrier of culture. Moreover, integrating local culture is also interesting because local culture is hands on, available any time around us; it isliterally spoken, and accessible; therefore it is not time consuming, it is cheaper and easier to be implemented. Moreover, it advances cooperative learning which improves independency and prepares students to live in globalized world. Viewed from teaching materials, local cultures is rich for its diversity and helps students to develop their identity by thinking about their own culture and by learning about others. Through differences or similarities, they establish an understanding that each of them is different, and understanding that each of them has a culture which is interesting and beneficial to look at.
