Abstract

This research is to know teachers’ perceptions on methods of teaching English for classes with mixed-English proficiency students: primary, elementary, intermediate, and advance levels.  These methods were some differentiated instructions taught in training to teachers of English as a community service activity which conducted to the teachers of English at Lembaga Bahasa (LB) Bagus Palembang. In this training, the participants learned the methods because they did not get the knowledge in their pre-service teacher training. They only had teaching methods for classes with one level of English proficiency. After they completed the training, they were monitored during the methods application in order to find their perceptions on teaching such class. The data were gathered via observations in the class during the monitoring. The observation data were, then, matched to the data from semi-structured interviews to know the participants’ perception on the methods in their classes.  The research revealed that the methods were proven to increase students’ participation in class with notification to high proficiency ones. However, it was not possible to suggest other best practices for dealing with all students in that class because not all practices work in a mixed-English proficiency class.

It revealed that all types of sentence structures were used in the descriptive paragraphs. There were 34.77% simple sentence structures, 22.96% compound sentence structures, 26.36% complex sentence structures, and 15.91% compound-complex sentence structures. Thus, the most widely used was simple sentence structures. Regarding the errors, it was found that only a few errors were made by them; omission (3 errors), addition (7 errors), misformation (19 errors), and misordering (1 error). Hence, misformation was the dominant error. In summary, the students wrote their descriptive paragraphs in simple sentences mostly and made errors in misformation the most.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to analyze the types of slang language used in the movie Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method and referred to Elisa Mattiello’s (2008) classification theory, which divided slang into five categories: Group and Subject Restriction, Secrecy and Privacy, Informality and Debasement, Vulgarity and Obscenity, and Time-Restriction, Ephemerality, and Localism. Data were collected from the film's dialogue and screenplay, then identified, categorized, and analyzed based on the context and usage of each slang expression. The findings showed that slang language appeared frequently throughout the film and served various communicative functions, such as building character identity, reinforcing group belonging, and reflecting cultural nuances in informal speech. Abstract

For final-year English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, producing final reports is an important academic milestone. However, little research has been done on how students feel about this process in vocational higher education settings. The purpose of this study was to look into the actual experiences of final-year Diploma III EFL students when preparing their final reports. Twelve final-year students from Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya's English Study Program participated in semi-structured interviews to gather data using a qualitative phenomenological approach. Thematic analysis was then used for analysis. Academic and research-related difficulties, emotional experiences, sources of support, coping mechanisms, and academic and personal development were the five main themes that emerged from the findings. Finding pertinent references, writing literature reviews, analyzing data, structuring ideas, and using academic writing conventions in English were all challenges faced by the participants. Stress, perplexity, frustration, exhaustion, anxiety, and self-doubt frequently accompanied these difficulties. However, students were able to handle them and maintain their motivation with the help of peers, family, supervisors, and online resources. Goal-setting, time management, asking for help, sticking to regular work schedules, and self-motivation were among the coping mechanisms used by them. The final report writing process was seen as a life-changing event that improved research competency, academic writing skills, critical thinking, independence, resilience, confidence, and problem-solving abilities despite the obstacles. The study comes to the conclusion that writing final reports is a significant learning experience that advances students' academic, personal, and professional development in addition to being a graduation requirement.

Abstract

This research explores the use of figurative language in the album The Car by Arctic Monkeys, focusing on its role in enhancing lyrical depth within the alternative rock genre. The main objectives are to identify the types of figurative language used and determine the most prevalent type in the album’s lyrics. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed, with data collected by active listening and recording of linguistic phenomena, specifically by analyzing lyrics from the Genius website and listening to the album on Spotify. The analysis was guided by Perrine’s (2017) framework, which categorizes figurative language into 12 types: simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, hyperbole, understatement, and irony. The findings reveal 64 instances of figurative language across the album’s 10 songs, with metaphor being the most frequent (22 instances), followed by symbol (14 instances), irony (11 instances), personification (7 instances), hyperbole (4 instances), paradox (3 instances), understatement (1 instance), simile (1 instance), and synecdoche (1 instance). Notably, apostrophe, metonymy, and allegory were absent. The study concludes that figurative language significantly enriches the artistic expression of The Car, making the lyrics more engaging and emotionally resonant. These findings contribute to understanding the creative use of language in alternative rock music.
