Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study analyzed qualitatively the cohesive devices used in argumentative essays of undergraduate EFL students in South Sumatera, Indonesia. Eighty essays were collected from eight universities in which ten essays were obtained from each. Halliday and Hasan (1976) concept of grammatical cohesion was used as the framework for the analysis of the essays. All the cohesive devices were found. Reference had the highest frequency which is 50.24% of the total cohesive devices followed by conjuction which is 37.34%, lexical cohesion which is 7.7% and ellipsis which is 3.57%. Substitution was the least used type of cohesive device which is only 1.15%. In terms of correctness of using the devices, most of the devices were all used properly. It was revealed that there was still few mistakes of using reference and substitution since they both were frequently used in the essays. Hence, it can be concluded that the students are more familiar with the use of reference and conjunction even though they are able to use the other devices as well. Keywords: cohesive devices, argumentative essay

Intended to delve into the film scripts written by English students of Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya Palembang, twenty-three students of the Introduction to Scriptwriting course were divided into 5 groups to carry out this research. Using a qualitative approach, the scripts were collected as the instrument and then analyzed using the data analysis method proposed by Leavy (2022). The results show that thriller and mystery films are the chosen genres. While focusing on the hospitality industry, students chose housekeeping, front office, and food and beverage. There is more than one main character developed in the film's stories in many different settings such as hotels, cruises, businesses, and universities. The script lasts six to ten minutes depending on the total number of pages in the script. This study shows that the script can meet the short film standards for the hospitality industry.

Abstract

Websites for hotels are essential sources of information for prospective guests. Because of this, their readability and appeal are crucial to hotel internet marketing. The objective of this study is to gain insight into the linguistic strategies utilized by hotels for online promotion. This study initially introduces an analytical framework grounded in appraisal theory to elucidate the underlying mechanisms employed by hotels to foster interpersonal interactions. This framework is subsequently employed to analyze the online linguistic strategies utilized by the five-star hotels in Palembang. The overall linguistic strategy is found, along with the hotels' preference for using it. This study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology, analyzing samples from hotel websites in Palembang based on their usage of language style. The findings indicated that metonym, hyperbole, metaphor, personification, simile, and synecdoche are the language types that the hotel frequently uses to entice readers to stay there with metaphor as the most dominant. In conclusion, one of the most important parts of making ads is using language style, which means changing the meaning of words and using figurative language to make them more fun to read.

Abstract

This research analyzed the English slang in the SCREAM VI movie through a sociolinguistic framework focusing on Chapman's primary and secondary slang. Teenage characters for group identity widely use primary slang while secondary slang conveys attitudes and serves as a covert code. The qualitative descriptive method reveals that slang in SCREAM VI creates informality, expresses rebellion, and provides in-group exclusivity. The researchers collected the data by watching the film SCREAM VI, downloading the movie script, and extracting the slang words used in it. The findings highlight the dynamic role of slang in reflecting social dimensions and cultural values within youth subcultures towards the primary and secondary slang found. It is expected that future research explores slang across different media and cultural contexts to further understand its evolution and functions.
