Abstract

The disparity of women leadership in higher education has been the concern of scholars for decades. However, the problem still exists until today. In the context of Islamic higher education in Indonesia, similar problem also continues to occur, yet the aspiration of young women lecturers has not been examined. This research aims to investigate the aspiration, hope, and challenges of young women lecturers at Islamic University in Banda Aceh, Indonesia on leadership positions. Employing in-depth interviews with 12 women lecturers in junior and mid leadership career this study found that: first,  women lecturers are less represented both in academic and managerial leaderships; second, all participants aspire more for academic leadership than the managerial one. However they would accept leadership position if they are given trust (amanah) or are appointed for that position; third,  the university uses a direct appointment model in the managerial positions, thus limiting highly motivated women or even men to apply for leadership career; and fourth, women academics have to deal with triple challenges in leadership careers: related to balancing between career and family as well as organizational culture and policies.

Abstract

Research about Islamic educational institutions, the market and the rise of the new Muslim middle-class in Indonesian society has mainly focused on schools. Its correlation with pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) as Islamic education providers has not yet been deeply portrayed. This paper aims to identify changes in pesantren management practices in relation to the growth of the Muslim middle-class and questions whether pesantren management practices intended to cater for the middle-class segment of society can be categorized as commodification or as acts of pious neoliberalism. As a preliminary examination, this paper was based on extensive literature and media research, interviews with teachers and parents in pesantren, and non-participant observation. This research highlights three different strategies developed by pesantren to respond to the growing size of the Muslim middle-class in Java, Indonesia: ‘developing’, ‘inserting’ and ‘creating’ new pesantren education programs. Three models are highlighted here in three select pesantren in Java: Firstly, a pesantren established and designed to accommodate middle-class Muslims that employs an approach that is an amalgamation between religious education and international educational standards. Secondly, a well-established traditional pesantren which built new ‘elite’ buildings to respond to demand from middle-class Muslims. And thirdly, a pesantren that targets urban middle-class students of all ages who have limited religious knowledge and which mainly focuses on a tahfidz program (memorizing of the Qur’an) through creating a ‘friendly’ image of learning the Qur’an. These pesantren maintain a deeply religious curriculum similar to traditional pesantren and provide good facilities for students but charge high fees for education, and as such may connotate a commodification practice. Using Mona Atia’s concept of pious neoliberalism, the writer questions whether the fusion of religious practices of any kind, commodification and adjustment to market logic, in this context, might be better understood as pious neoliberalism. In this sense, the commodification practices in the examples offered here should not always bear a pejorative meaning. While admitting that global changes have introduced new challenges to the Muslim community and in relation to Islamic education, it is hoped that this article will encourage further discussion and investigation on the subject of the changing nature of provision and management of Islamic educational institutions, in particular pesantren, in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper focuses on two issues. Firstly, the role performed by women (nyais) in managing pesantren by considering the issue of work division, authority and responsibility principles in management practices. Secondly, it observes on how knowledge is managed and preserved in pesantren. This paper is based on reviews of the previous research about women and pesantren. Thi study shows that there are three types of nyai’s role in managing pesantren education. First, a nyai who hold clear responsibility, work division and at the same time owned authority in managing a male and female students. Second, a nyai who has a clear division of work, and responsibility but does not have authority in managing a male and female students. And third, a nyai who leads a sepcific female pesantren and hold authority, responsibility and task in developing her pesantren. It is through various method of learning, espceially memorization of knowledge and the Qur’an, that tradition and knowledge of Islamic tradional subjects in pesantren are preserved and practiced.

Abstract

[Unequal and unbalanced roles of women and men have become the subject of intense debate in Muslim society. Common cultural and religious perceptions have long been that men’s roles should dominate over women’s roles and that women’s subordination is an unalterable fate. This study examines conceptualization by Indonesian Muslim teachers regarding Islamic texts, primarily of the hadith (the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad), that describe and prescribe aspects of gender roles. This qualitative study was designed to explore perceptions of five male and five female teachers, employed in Islamic Secondary Schools in Yogyakarta, as related to their understanding of women’s status in Islamic society. The data were gathered through mixed-gender focus group discussions conducted online via Zoom. Findings show that the subjects clearly acknowledge that individual and institutional attitudes persist for circumscribing women’s participation within Muslim society, and that most Muslims derive these attitudes from Islamic texts (mainly the hadith) that have been translated in historical and/or literal ways. The teachers varied in their views about three Islamic concepts which were analyzed as influential for the societal and occupational status of women, namely kodrat (human nature), qiwama (societal standing and leadership), and laknat (judgment by, or wrath of, the angels). Basically, not all of the teachers in this study had occasion to teach the subject of Islamic Jurisprudence (fiqh), in which the marriage topic is specifically covered, yet they were all aware of an ongoing need in classroom and society. This study has practical implications of the pedagogical approaches in Islamic schools for education on gender equality.]
