Abstract

There are more than 170 universities in Indonesia that are organizing study program of architecture. Those entire study programs is applying studio format as one of the main ways of learning, as well as most schools of architecture in the world (Lawson, 2004: 20). Studio dominance is reflected in the national curriculum of architecture degree program that requires a minimum of 48 credits of studio. Among those many study programs of architecture, there are various "colors" or paradigm that has been adopted by each study program. The paradigm is also color the task and the implementation of architectural design studio. Diversity in the design studio is a power of knowledge and skills that need to be absorbed. Joint studio is one way to "absorb" this power. Abstract

City center is an urban place which always attract people either for visit or work purpose. Those activities generates pedestrian traffic that needs to be managed by providing transition space. So far, the need of transition space in urban Indonesia has not been clearly regulated and considered related to the design of transition space that can be use by pedestrians in the city center. Furthermore, there are no studies related to the aspects that need to be considered in the design needs of urban transition space from pedestrians point of view. The study aims to design transition space requirements in the CBD through a visitor and worker pedestrian preferences approach.  Moreover, physical aspect / design element that need to be considered are conditions, potentials and factors that affect the existence of transition place. Field study and analysis found that visitor and workers found in Bandung central area mostly prefer pedestrian mall type as a transition space. Furthermore, the design principles for transition space consists of component of form, access and the character of space.

Abstract

Kampung Bahari Tambak Lorok is a coastal settlement in Semarang that has a vulnerability to disaster. The main problem of the vulnerability is the tidal and annual flooding every rainy season. The flooding is caused by the location of Kampung Bahari, the land subsidence issue, and the effect of climate change that causes extreme weather and sea-level rise (SLR). Kampung Bahari is located in North Semarang and is formed by the young alluvial deposits that trigger subsidence, while the subsidence itself is not only caused by geology reason but also geotechnical reasons, such as excessive water consumption, consolidation, and excessive land loads. This paper aims to examine the design approach that is most probable to be implied due to the vulnerability of Kampung Bahari towards the tidal and annual flood caused by the reasons mentioned above. The research will be carried out by data collection about Kampung Bahari, finding the actual settlement condition, and describing the problems deeper. The result will focus on the physical intervention consisting of implementing water-sensitive design principles, especially in the spatial planning of the settlements, urban system efficiency, building prototype guidelines, and infrastructure.

Abstract

Individuals' multi-sensory experiences play an essential role in understanding a place of cultural significance. Understanding urban area/environment in the conception of a place is not limited to physical aspects alone. This understanding contradicts to the common paradigm in cultural heritage conservation, which is still limited to improving physical quality based on visual senses. This study aims to discuss the role and potential of multi-sensory in understanding the concept of place, which is beneficial to the conservation of urban heritage areas. This study employs the content analysis method with data from library studies and field observations of cultural heritage areas in and around Gedung Sate, Bandung. The results demonstrate that multi-sensory perception plays a pivotal role and has the potential to facilitate the process of reading and understanding its sense of place. This discussion opened a new discourse to integrate non-physical aspects based on subject perceptions in discussions on urban heritage areas.

Abstract

Multisensory perception is essential for individuals or communities to fully appreciate urban historic areas. Recognizing non-physical aspects such as sound, smell, and tactile sensations based on human senses is crucial for enhancing the relationship between individuals and their environment. Discussions on heritage conservation extend beyond physical aspects evaluated visually to encompass non-physical elements. This article presents five questions covering the definition, influencing factors, types and categories, and methods for multisensory perception research. Furthermore, this article aims to explain gaps in multisensory research in urban historic areas to determine what and how future heritage conservation studies should be conducted. The research employs content analysis methods to analyze discussions from selected literature regarding the benefits of multisensory research in urban historic areas. Multisensory perception significantly influences the diverse sensory experience of intangible aspects in an environment, enriching urban heritage conservation approaches.

Abstract

This paper explores the transformative potential of AI in urban design studios through a case study where 28 master's students were tasked with simulating an urban design plan for Nusantara - Indonesia's new capital city.  The studio was designed to allow students to engage with each phase of the urban design process using manual techniques, AI-driven tools, or a combination of both, creating a comparative framework to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of AI in each stage. The goal of this research is to investigate how AI-augmented instruments are being used in educational settings, particularly in creative design courses, and to assess the potential advancements that these tools may offer to the subject. The research further intends to analyse how AI tools affect students' design thinking and technical abilities, leading to strategic recommendations for successfully incorporating these technologies into design education while keep adhering to the ethical guidelines in academic works.
