Abstract

Penelitian ini berupaya untuk menggali persepsi para mahasiswa terkait materi yang diajarkan dalam mata kuliah Writing for General Communication di salah satu kampus swasta di kota Cimahi. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini ada 33 orang. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penelitian ini mendapatkan informasi melalui kuesioner dan analisa dokumen. Kuesioner dibutuhkan untuk mengungkap fakta tentang respon mahasiswa terkait materi tersebut. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, para partisipan memberikan persepsi yang positif. Sebagian partisipan bahkan memberikan masukan agar peneliti membuat buku teks yang lebih ramah dengan literasi budaya dan sesuai dengan kearifan lokal di Indonesia. Implikasi dari hasil penelitian ini dapat digunakan menjadi pijakan dalam pembuatan buku yang koheren dengan kebutuhan mahasiswa selaku peserta didik.

Abstract

Abstract Teaching English for Foreign Language has some obstacles. Hopefully the obstables can be decreased by arranging the appropriate strategies to deliver the materials. The stakeholders, the lecturers, and experts try to clasify the suitable subjects to help students in mastering the language skills. Those language skills hopefully helps the students as teachers to be. One of the subjects taught for freshmen of English Education Department is Writing for General Communication. The research wants to reveal the phenomenon of lecturers’ preparation  to lecture the subject. The reseacher uses descriptive qualitative method. The participants are the lecturers team who arrange the Writing For General Communication text book. Keywords:  Teaching English for Foreign Language, Writing for General Communication, Preparation  Abstrak Pengajaran bahasa Inggris untuk penutur asing memang memiliki berbagai tantangan. Dengan spesifikasi mata kuliah yang disusun oleh para pemangku kebijakan di prodi Bahasa Inggris, diharapkan para mahasiswa dapat menguasai keterampilan-keterampilan berbahasa. Keterampilan-keterampilan berbahasa ini diharapkan dapat menghantarkan para mahasiswa untuk menjadi para pendidik yang memiliki kualifikasi mumpuni. Salah satu mata kuliah yang diajarkan pada prodi Bahasa Inggris adalah Writing for General Communication. Mata kuliah ini diajarkan pada mahasiswa semester awal. Maka penelitian ini berusaha mengungkap fenomena terkait persiapan yang sebaiknya dilakukan oleh para dosen untuk mengajar mata kuliah Writing For General Communication. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Para partisipan dari penelitian ini adalah tiga orang dosen yang sedang menyusun buku teks Writing For General Communication. Kata Kunci: Persiapan Dosen, Pengajaran, Writing for General Communication

Abstract

Writing is one out of four skills that should be mastered, but Writing is the most difficult one because of its complexity in making sentence. This research is intended to identify the students’ needs related to Writing for General Communication as a subject in the second semester. The research method was qualitative. The data were obtained from test, questionnaire and interview as a triangulation. The respondents were 33 students of second semester of English Department in IKIP Siliwangi Bandung. The data from test showed that students’ difficulties in writing dealing with linguistic problem. In addition, the data from questionnaire revealed that respondents have various educatioal experiences, their first language, their interests, their cultural background and different purposes for learning English. The result showed that almost 100% of students want to learn tenses, kinds of text, generic structure and punctuation. It indicates that there is a need to design a coursebook in Writing General Communication based on the students’ need. It is used as the basic for designing a textbook in Writing for General Communication subject. Need analysis, Material development, Writing for General Communication

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out the students’ responses toward the implementation of Pictionary game technique in teaching English vocabulary to the seventh-grade students. The study was conducted at SMP Dharma Kartini. The students of VII C  class that consists of 38 students were selected as the participants of the research. The research used descriptive qualitative method. The data of the research was obtained from observation during the implementation of Pictionary game in the class and from the students’ interview that has conducted to 5 students. The result showed that Pictionary game technique is useful to draw the students’ motivation in learning English vocabulary. From the data of observation showed that the Pictionary game made the students more active to get involved in teaching and learning process actively. The students also showed good responses from the data of interview, they stated that learning by using Pictionary game was fun but also challenging which make them motivate in learning English. Thus, it can be concluded that Pictionary game is an attractive technique that can be used to motivate students in learning vocabulary and make the students to learn English vocabulary in a more fun and creative way.   Keywords:  Pictionary game, Vocabulary

Abstract

The research is aimed to investigate the implementation and to find out student’s responses to the guided questions technique in teaching writing recount text. The research used descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained from observation and questionnaire. The research was conducted at SMPN 5 Cimahi which the participant was the 35 students of VIII – G. The result of the research showed that the guided question technique was implemented under the theory. It can be seen from the use of basic questions to gathering the ideas and the steps of implementing the guided question technique were done while the teaching-learning process. Guided questions technique also helps students in understanding the material. Meanwhile, the students gave a positive response toward the guided questions technique's implementation with 76.3% of students agree that the guided question technique is interesting and easy to use. Moreover, with the average 97%, attention aspect being the highest average indicator which can be illustrated that the guided questions technique was interesting and enjoyable. Keywords: Writing, Recount text, Guided question, Student's response

Abstract

Figurative language is a part of semantic. This research analyzed the figurative language used in the lyric of Awaken by Maher Zain. The aims of this research are to figure out the figurative languages used in the lyric of Awaken  and to analyze the contextual meaning of figurative language used in that song lyric. It is expected the result of this research will be useful for the reader especially in describing what figurative language is and what kinds of figurative language are. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The lyrics of song is got from kapanlagi.com entitle Awaken. The result found that there are some kinds of figurative language used in Maher Zain’s song entitle Awaken, such as hyperbole, rhetoric, repetition and personification. The contextual meaning of each figurative language is also clarified. The conclusion of this research is there are some kinds of figurative language use by Maher Zain in his song entitle Awaken.

Abstract

English is one of the subjects studied by Indonesia students' ranging from Junior High School until University. One aspect that plays an important role in learning English is vocabulary mastery. For that reason, the purpose of this study is to know whether or not there is any improvement of vocabulary mastery by using an index card match strategy. This research was conducted at SMPN 4 Cikalongwetan using the classroom action research (CAR) method with 30 students as samples. Learning using the index card match itself is considered to be able to increase vocabulary mastery as an impact of interesting and exciting learning, it can be seen from the score of post-test which is higher than the pre-test score, with a pre-test score of 64.66, post-test score cycle 1 of 79.33 and post-test score cycle-2 of 83,66. This means the index card match strategy is effective to improve students' vocabulary mastery. Keywords:  Vocabulary, Index Card Match, CAR

Abstract

This research is aimed to know about what larger patterns are used in the report text and what is the role of larger patterns used for the reader. The researcher found that the report text about Australian senator hit with egg after blaming imigration for mosque attack (Karasz, 2019) used claim-counterclaim patterns.The role of claim-counterclaim patterns in that report text is to make readers easy to understand the text, as the reader will know who is the one who was claimed at the beginning as an anti-imigration person, and why he hit a teenager, and what is the reason the teenager smashed him. The researcher suggests for the futher researcher to use other more interesting sources to find more the larger patterns and to knowabout the role of the patterns.Keywords: Larger patterns, report text

Abstract

Teaching strategy can describe effective teachers are always looking for something new to keep their students motivated and engaged. If you’re as a new or experienced teacher, you will feel too much by all of the new educational buzzwords, theories, and new strategies that are out there. Strategy of teaching can be considered as something new that may not be suitable to be applied to your teaching style. In this teaching strategy, an English teacher observed used communicative approach and joyful learning approach. Teaching strategy is the most important to be existed and supported areas of in education field especially in a research. The research reviews concentrates to the whole literature includes research done is not educational settings or focuses on only a partial set of studies that may or may not be valid. There has never become a perfect research review on the achievement of the methods of teaching strategy used at many schools. An extensive search found at the school SMAN 1 Cipatat investigating a teaching method used. At the school, an English teacher observed had taught by communicative approach and joyful learning approach. The result of the teaching strategy used the teacher had a good effect on student achievement. When the effect of teaching strategy used by a teacher with the communicative and joyful learning approach, the strategy promoted the greatest effect namely the class atmosphere was life and interesting. The teacher’s teaching performance was excellent.

Abstract

Discourse analysis is a broad term for the study of the ways in which language is used in texts and contexts. Elision is very simply the omission of certain sound of the words in certain contexts. In this study, the writers use qualitative method of discourse analysis to examine and find out the types of elision that used by students in presentation. The data were taken from the recordings of two group students’ presentations on the class A2 English Education 2015 on IKIP Siliwangi Bandung with the subject “Theories of Interpreting”. The result shows that there are three types of elision used by the students. They are apheresis elision, syncope elision, and apocope elision the students use 6 words of apheresis elision, 22 words of syncope elision, 25 words of apocope elision during the presentation of two group students. It can be concluded that the commonly used is apocope ellision as many as 25 word.
