Abstract

This paper discussed Bahasa Indonesia as one of the general course in higher education. In the university, this subject includes in personality development. Therefore, the purpose of this subject is not limited to the ability to use the rules of language in communication. This paper aims to show that at the level of langue, Indonesian can be used to develop student creativity. The concept of this langue as proposed by Saussure. Within this concept, there are syntagmatic and associative relationships that can be used to develop student creativity through scientific papers. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Based on the analysis that already conducted, found that through a search of constituents which have syntagmatic and associative relations in the form of words, phrases, and sentences, then we can found the new ideas and creativity can be developed and contained in the form of scientific papers.

Abstract

Figurative language is one kind of the language styles to make the expression and the message of the speaker or writer is strengthened. Figurative language usually used in song lyrics. Sometimes, figurative languages existed in song lyrics can’t be understandable. One of the song lyrics that has a lot of figurative languages is songs from Sinestesia album by Efek Rumah Kaca. Therefore, this research is trying to analyze figurative languages existed in song lyrics on Efek Rumah Kaca’s album titled Sinestesia. The research is focused on analyzing type of figurative languages with its meaning by using Kennedy’s theory of classification of figurative language (1983) and Ogden and Richard’s theory of meaning (1923). Qualitative descriptive is the method that used for this research. The result of this research is 4 type of figurative languages is found, which is 25 personifications, 18 metaphors, 15 overstatements, and 2 apostrophes with each of figurative language’s meaning is elaborated. Besides of it, the writer found that figurative languages existed in the Sinestesia album’s song lyrics has a connection to the song itself.

Abstract

The title of this research is An Analysis of Social Conflict in Toer’s “Midah, Simanis Bergigi Emas”. This research attempts to analyze the social conflict in the novel and how the author conveyed the social conflict. This research used a descriptive qualitative method in order to answer the research question and used A. J. Greimas theory namely “Actant Scheme and Functional Structure” to process the data. Greimas’s theory used in this research is aim to know the structure of the story and how the conflict happen, because this theory shows the character and the story have a function that interplay with each other such as subject, object, sender, receiver, opponent, and helper. And the result from this research, the researcher found the conflict occurred in the story by the characters connected to the theory used. The researcher choose the book because the story contained in the work mostly talk about social life. Through this research, it can concluded that through literature, the author conveyed their opinion and message about social life and social conflict. In this research, the researcher found that the author conveyed the social conflict based on its acts of characters, sequences of events, and conversations between the characters.

Abstract

This paper was entitled “An Analysis of Characters and Characterization in Wells the Island of Dr. Moreau”. This paper discussed of the secondary characters and their characterizations on novel the island of Dr.Moreau which were Moreau itself and his experiments or beast folks. The background of this research was taken because the novel is science fiction. The characters might be representing of future. The depiction of characters and characterizations was the reason of this paper and the development. The object researches problems were the way of the author explained the characters and characterizations, the characters development, and how plotting line assisted the characters and characterizations were developed. The theories were used in this paper; narratology including characters and characterization, and literary works. The aims of this paper the comprehension on literary works and how to find out the signs. The methodology in this paper is used qualitative method and descriptive methodology to interpret the signs. The result of the object research problems the secondary characters were the flat characters. The character of Moreau was the antagonist on this novel, meanwhile the beast folks were tritagonist. The findings were taken by point of view, dialogue, and so on. For further research of this paper, it might be taken of semiotics to get deeper comprehension of characters on this novel.

Abstract

This study concentrated on using project-based learning to help students become more proficient readers, particularly of report texts. This study had two goals, the first is to examine how project-based learning can be used to help students become better readers specially on report texts. Moreover, the study aims to track students' reactions to the implementation of project-based in reading learning. Mixed method design was used as the research design for this study. Additionally, the researchers used several instruments to gather data, including observation sheets, reading tests for students, questionnaires, and interview questions. The study's findings showed that project-based learning, when used to teach students in reading reports text with common themes and constant teacher guidance throughout the reading process may enhance students' reading comprehension. The average score of the students' reading tests taken chronologically shows that the students enhance their reading skills in the report text. The results also demonstrated that students responded positively to the implementation of project-based learning in reading report text. The opinions of the students demonstrated that they believed project-based learning improved their comprehension of the content of the report text. Additionally, since project-based learning enables students to read more comprehensively, it is advised that English teachers use it to teach reading skills for other genres of texts and other language skills.
