Abstract

The study examines the portrayal of women’s roles in the marriage from the Islamic classical book Iḥyā’‘Ulūm al-Dīn written by Abu Hamid al-Ghazali which is widely taught at Pesantrens in Central Java, Indonesia. The interpretation of this book has a significant impact on the thinking, mindset, personality, and attitudes of Pesantrens communities. This research first uses the library-based method, analyzing the literature on Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn and using the qualitative-interpretative approach in understanding the text regarding women’s roles in marriage. Secondly, the research examines how Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn is taught in three Pesantrens in Central Java. The result shows that al-Ghazali›s view of women in Iḥyā’ is different from his views before isolation. In Iḥyā’, the patriarchal language is sensed. The common use of al-Ghazali’s monumental work in Pesantren is in the Bandongan (teacher-centered) method without any criticism in teaching about women’s roles in marital relations. Even though Iḥyā’ is not the only source of imbalance of the roles of women and men in marriage, but it does contribute to it by becoming an unquestioned authoritative source on these contemporary issues in the Pesantrens. Therefore a methodical improvement in the learning process becomes a necessity by using the active learning strategies into active-Bandongan methods that can increase the activeness of the teaching and learning process carried out either by teachers or students to produce dynamic and contextual creative thoughts.

Abstract

Abstract: Based on the action of al-Shafi’i that the Fatwa differs by the change of the [geographical] location. It was [even] said that this new Madh’hab [and Methodology] even started taking form just before he left Iraq to Mecca, others said [that it started to take form] before leaving Mecca, but what is definite though is that he wrote it and set its foundations in Egypt. Thus it has nothing to do with it being in Egypt or in Iraq. The consequence of this concept is that certain rules of Islam, would not apply, due to the new environment they live in, and that we live in a new time and age. So rules regarding riba, marriage, social interaction, international law, ruling systems, would need to be updated, according to the said principle. The proponents of this understanding use the example of Imam Shafi’i to legitimise their viewpoint.

Abstract

The article aims to explore the implementation of al-wasathiyyah concept as a way towards achieving moderatism, as well as to see the discourse of Islam and moderation in Indonesia. The method is qualitative with religious sociological approach. Religious sociological approach is used because the wasathiyyah concept is tightly tied to the religion and society. The results of the research show that wasathiyyah Islam has the correlation to ethics and moderate traditions which are considered as a form of virtue. Moderate tradition in Islam in Indonesia includes several aspects of life, including: first, moderate in its thought and movement, which is reflected by the belief that is in line with the nature and ibadah that promotes world prosperity. Second, moderate in aqidah that is in line with the fitrah or nature of mankind, including in tolerance, consistence, and balance. Third, moderate in practicing Islamic teachings that is in accordance with human ability and not burdensome. Fourth, moderate in its method (manhaj). Fifth, moderate in reform and ijtihad. Through wasathiyyah Islam, Indonesian muslims are accustomed to a set of thoughts, behaviors, and actions that promote the spirit of moderation. Moreover, Indonesian Muslims are willing to consciously let go of their primordial religious bonds in favor of moderation. Therefore, waasathiyyah Islam is a concrete realization of a socio-political structure that is deeply rooted since the beginning, not a new diction that is used to describe the mindset of a certain group

Abstract

Papua, which is a part of Indonesia, has a vibrant ethnic culture. Traditions are frequently tied to religion in practice. Waqf is an Islamic principle that does not necessarily contradict regional traditions. The purpose of this study is to describe the land waqf practices in the Papuan community of Dosay. With its subject in Papua’s Dosay village, this study used a descriptivequalitative methodology. The conclusion of this study is that there is an additional mechanism for implementing waqf, namely one based on Customary law, particularly through approval from Ondoafi as the head of tradition, who has rights to all land and all of its natural resources in a customary territory, or through customary deliberations. In Dosay village, the land waqf was given support for the implementation of Islamic worship, and Ondoafi fully backed this up by demonstrating that he had been given waqf land for free to use for religious services, proselytizing, education, and public facilities. However, the administration of waqf certificates, which have not fully utilized all existing assets, continues to be a problem. Despite Islam being a minority faith, the consequences of this study offer examples of religious moderation in waqf practice.
