Abstract

Rice husk as a by-product of the rice milling process is a material that can still be processed to be a product that can be used in various applications. The potential for the commercialization ofrice husks is still hampered by its low economic value. By using the heating method using an inert gas, rice husk can be converted into a composite which contains mostly silica and carbon, a wellknown component with excellent adsorbent properties. This aimed to study the preparation of rice husk-baased silica/carbon composite and its adsorption behavior. In this research, the utilization of rice husk into silica/carbon composites was done by using three different methods. Common heating under temperature of 800 oC, heating process under temperature of 800 oC using furnace equipped with inert gas, and heating process under temperature of 800 oC using furnace equipped with inert gas with addition of glucose solution were carried out in order to obtain three different kinds of composite. Analysis and characterization using were performed to observe the properties of the composites. As the result, from Fourier Transform Infra-Red and X-Ray diffraction characterizations, silica/carbon composites were successfully made as both of carbon and amorphous silica spectra appeared in the result. Furthermore, composite made under temperature of 800 oC using furnace equipped with inert gas with addition of glucose solution has the highest adsorption capacity and Langmuir’s model adsorptive behavior with R2 value of 0.935.

Abstract

Optimization of the drug delivery system is based on the need for more efficient and effective drugs to fight disease. The addition of surfactant as an additive in the drug delivery precursor solution can affect the performance of the material, especially on the ability of drug release. In this study, Tween 80 was used as a surfactant to be mixed in a low molecular weight chitosan solution. Several variations of the Tween 80: chitosan ratios, as well as variations in acidity conditions, are used to determine the optimum conditions for drug release. Drug release profile fittings were tested on three kinetic models that were frequently used namely zero order model, Higuchi’s model, and Korsmeyer-Peppa’s model. The results showed that the optimum conditions for release were obtained with the use of a ratio of 7:10 with a release profile resembling Korsmeyer-Peppa’s model.

Abstract

A chemical-based insect repellent such as N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) is commonly used against all insects despite its toxicity in humans. Hence, a repellent agent from natural sources of plant essential oil was introduced. Some of the plants which have the repellent potential are catnip, hairy basil, citronella, vetiver, clove, and citrus. Citronellal, citronellol, geraniol, eugenol, eugenol-acetate, and beta-caryophyllene are among the repellent active components in these plants. Citrus hystrix (kaffir lime) was known for several applications in food, health, and skincare, but its potential as mosquito repellent is still new. This overview paper highlights the potential of kaffir lime essential oil as a mosquito repellent and the encapsulation of essential oil related to mosquito repellent. Several studies on kaffir lime essential oil as mosquito repellent was conducted and revealed that the major repellent active components are citronellol and limonene. Pure kaffir lime essential oil provides one-hour repellent protection against the mosquito. However, an addition of 5% vanillin prolongs the protection time to three hours. Essential oil is easily vaporized at room temperature which shortens its effectiveness time. Encapsulation of the essential oil would control the vaporization process and hence prolong its efficiency. Nonetheless, almost no research work reported on the encapsulation of kaffir lime essential oil and the release mechanism of the encapsulated kaffir lime.

Abstract
