Abstract

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has been know as one of the most successful approaches in teaching English to speaker of other languages. With this approach students are required to engage in communication trough interaction using the target language as much as possible. In the countries where English is taught as a foreign language or as a second language, this approach has become an ideal example on how activities are reconstructed in teaching learning activity to improve students’ ability in communicating in English both in spoken and written ways. Despites all of the advantages of CLT, there are still some the flaws found in he implementation of CLT in teaching learning activities. Therefore, in this paper, the writer will not only provide some critiques that are normally found in CLT but also suggesting some alternatives based on the socio cultural concepts to mitigate the shortcoming. The provided alternatives are aimed to re -conceptualize the CLT in based on the socio cultural perspective.

Abstract

In Indonesia, English has been taught for many years ago to enable the students to be able to communicate in English effectively. Unfortunately, the results of English teaching and learning at senior high schools were far expectation. Therefore, as one of the efforts by the government is to keep changing curriculum hoping that it can provide better results. School Based Curriculum (SBC) has been implemented in Indonesia in the action of perfecting the competence-based curriculum. SBC gives a school a chance to develop teaching materials based on the school potentials, students’ needs and ability and the need of the society around the school.  SBC also focus on the process orientation rather than product orientation. SBC also expects integration of the material to be authentic or based on the real-life situation so the students know how the language works in real life context with the purpose that students can learn English better. However, the efficiency of developing and implementing SBC in most schools are very low because the tasks those need to be dealt with are very complex and difficult and in the reality, the schools have encountered a number of challenges in the process such as lack of capabilities and skills of teachers, lack of resources and material and not there is no sufficient fund.

The way people connect with one another is referred to as communication. People interact to communicate things like asking, asserting, promising, thanking, apologizing, and complaining. Thus, utterances have a purpose in communication. The goal of this study was to identify the sorts of illocutionary acts used in Zootopia. Specifically, the study examined any illocutionary acts found in the main character’s utterances. This qualitative study used descriptive methods as a technique analysis. The study also used documentary techniques and classification methods to analyze the data obtained. The data were the utterances of the main character, Judy Hopps. The results of this study revealed that the speeches of the main character contained five categories of illocutionary acts: representative acts, directive acts, commissive acts, expressive acts, and declarative acts. In addition, the most illocutionary acts used were the expressive acts. Thus, it can be concluded that the type of illocutionary acts that appears the most in the speeches of the main character is the expressive acts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe how students at SMK Muhammadiyah Banda Aceh feel about the TOEIC competency test and pinpoint any obstacles they may have encountered while taking the test. Using the purposive sampling technique, 30 children from class 2 at SMK Muhammadiyah Banda Aceh were chosen as the sample for this study. Two questionnaires were used to gather data. The analysis findings suggest that most students have a favorable opinion on the TOEIC test. They believed that taking the test helped them improve their English, and they would suggest it to others. However, they also struggle to read test texts, comprehend challenging terms and settings, and respond to questions. Additionally, some students lacked confidence and were unfamiliar with the test question styles. This study found that the TOEIC test has a good effect, but also highlights the difficulties that students experience. The recommendations include improving students' comprehension of exam instructions, addressing issues by understanding challenging terms and circumstances, and offering assistance to increase students' confidence. The TOEIC test and more efficient methods of English language instruction were predicted to benefit from the findings of this study.

Abstract

Translation is a product of the process called translating. In translating, a translator has to make sure the translation has the equivalent meaning to the source texts. There many theories on how to have a good translation; one of the theories is dynamic equivalence theory.  In this paper, the writers would like to discuss deeper about the use of dynamic equivalence theory in translating process where English as a source language and Bahasa Indonesia as the target language. The implementation of dynamic equivalence theory is discussed together with the examples and explanation about why dynamic equivalence is used and why some words are chosen in translation and not the other words.  It shows that when word-to-word translation cannot make sense the meaning of the target language dynamic equivalence theory offers flexibility for the translator to translate and to make sense the meaning of the translation.

Abstract

This study explores the experiences of Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh third-semester English students, focusing on the difficulties they encounter and the methods they use to get better at writing. The study gathers students' opinions about the complex range of challenges they face in their writing classes, emphasizing problems with motivation, vocabulary growth, creative thinking, organizational abilities, and language mechanics (such as grammar and punctuation). Furthermore, a significant proportion of students confess that they are insecure about their writing skills. The study employs a qualitative methodology, with the main means of gathering data being questionnaires. There are twenty closed-ended, Likert-scaled questions in these surveys. To shed more light on the experiences of the students, in-depth insights are also obtained through interviews. Positively, the results show a trend, with many students actively seeking to improve through positive means. They use writing manuals and Internet resources, and they clearly want advice and criticism. In addition, they consistently engage in self-evaluation and reflection as well as writing workshops. These findings show that students are making an effort to improve their writing abilities, even though there are certain common issues. This study offers educators helpful advice by highlighting the importance of addressing motivational issues and offering tools to support students as they develop into competent English writers
