Abstract

Reading is not just as a simply reading but it requires a good understanding to get the meaning of the written text. Some students yet face difficulty in receiving the meaning of the text. So, the aim of this study is to analyze the difficulties faced by the English Department students in mastering reading text, especially about finding and understanding the main idea. It also studies how the students deal with their difficulties in Intensive Reading Comprehension class. To reach the goal, 10 students were taken randomly as the participants. Question sheets were distributed to the participants and also supported with interview. They helped the writer in collecting the data about the students’ difficulties.  From the gaining data, it is found that most students had problem in mastering reading text especially in understanding main idea that caused by lacking of vocabulary mastery. To deal with this problem, the students tried some ways by practicing reading aloud, having group learning, and asking the lecturer to use the appropriate technique in teaching learning reading comprehension.

Abstract

The spread of the covid-19 pandemic has changed the teaching and learning process from conventional to e-learning classes. This e-learning class brings out the challenges for students, educators, parents, and institutions. This present study was aimed to see the e-learning challenges faced by students during the Covid-19 pandemic. The participants of this study were 40 students at the Islamic Faculty of Muhammadiyah Aceh University. The qualitative descriptive was applied to analyze 20 questionnaires that were distributed through a google form. The questionnaire was divided into four sessions of challenges that involve internet connectivity, facilities support, technology competence, and self-regulation. This study revealed that students faced problems with the internet, devices, and self-regulation, while technology competence did not show significant challenges.

Abstract

This paper aimed at examining the impact of staff development program on teaching performance. The questionnaire was administered to 100 high school teachers in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Descriptive analysis was utilized in this study. This study found that the majority of high school teachers in Banda Aceh perceived that the staff development program has impact on teaching performance. Meanwhile, in terms of genders, duration and the areas focused on this program, this study found inconclusive results regarding the impact of the staff development program. In terms of gender, it was indicated that each respondent had contrasting views on the impact of the staff development program. Two variables of teaching performance indicated no significant difference among teachers. However, four variables revealed significant difference among teachers. With regards to the duration of staff development program attended, each respondent also had different views on the impact of staff development program. Four variables of teaching performance indicated no significant difference among teachers, while, two variables indicated the significant difference among teachers. Regarding the most areas which are focused on staff development program, it was found that there was no significant difference among teachers in perceiving the impact of staff development program.

Abstract

The aim of teacher education program is to produce a competent teacher for the next future. Teacher quality is always named as the most significant efficiency of teacher education program. This paper discusses the concept of teacher education program that influence the performance of teacher. This paper aims to analyze the teacher preparation program and ponder the preparation program in creating novice teacher to be the professional teacher for future. This paper serves the view of the teacher education program and how this program prepares novice teacher in Indonesia. This paper also focuses on whether this program constitutes as a program that enable the student teachers in implementation their tasks in the teaching process for the future. The result of this program is expected to be able to deliver the professional and competent educators.

Abstract

Speaking merupakan kemampuan utama yang harus dikuasai oleh mahasiswa yang mempelajari bahasa Inggris, maka dari itu dibutuhkan perhatian yang khusus agar mahasiswa mampu menguasai berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan baik dan lancar. Salah satu dari beberapa aspek yang perlu diperhatikan dosen dalam pengajaran speaking adalah persiapan dosen sebelum mengajar agar proses pembelajaran berjalan sesuai dengan tujuan yang diharapkan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dalam penyajian data. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki bagaimana dosen-dosen bahasa Inggris Unmuha mempersiapkan pembelajaran mata kuliah Speaking di Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara kepada dosen yang mengajar mata kuliah speaking. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data adalah pedoman wawancara. Data yang dikumpulkan dianalisis dengan menggunakan reduksi data, penampilan data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil dari penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa dosen Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris mempersiapkan mata kuliah Speaking dengan baik dengan membuat perencanaan pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan silabus yang tersedia serta memilih metode, materi, dan media yang tepat dan sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa.Kata Kunci: Persiapan Pengajaran, Speaking

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the students’ ability in writing application letter in general. This study done at english department Muhammadiyah Aceh University, while the students of semester four were taken as the participants. This study is a descriptive quantitative in which  the students’ worksheets and interview are used as the instruments. The result of data analysis shows that the students’ ability in writing application letter is very good. The highest aspect of writing which mastered by the students is mechanic, while the lowest aspect of writing is grammar. Then, the data shows that the grammar mastery affect the students’ ability in writing paragraph process in which the students do not able to express their written ideas if they do not know how to write grammatically correct in english. The significance of this study is pointed to the lecturers and the students. For the lecturers, it is expected that they can evaluate the students’ ability in writing application letter, especially to support their ability in english, and for the students, it is expected that they can get better ways in improving their ability in writing application letter.

Abstract

Narrative text is one of reading texts should be mastered by the students in learning English. Reading skill is considered as a skill that needs a strong comprehension. Thus, this paper aimed to find out to what extend students understand reading of narrative text; to identify the items of reading skill mastered well by the students in comprehending narrative text; and to examine the method used by the teacher in teaching reading narrative text. The worksheet and interview were applied to analyze the data. The result showed that students’ ability in understanding reading of narrative text is very good. The first aspect of reading which mastered by the students is main idea with 84,44%, the second is reference with 83,89%, the third is detail with 81,11%, the fourth is inference with 80,33% and the last aspect is vocabulary with 66,67%. It concludes that the aspect that mastered well by the students is main idea and the most difficult aspects for the students in reading is vocabulary. Pertaining to interview, teacher taught the students by using many methods in order to avoid the students’ boredom in learning.

Abstract

The aim of this study is at examining how well the students’ ability in mastering the text and the main idea, and how they could improve their ability in understanding the text especially to find out the main idea from the text. The object of this study was 10 students from semester I in Intensive Reading Comprehension class. The data was obtained from the result of students’ worksheets and questionnaires distribution. In finding out the result, The data was analyzed by using descriptive qualitative. The result shows that the students’ ability in mastering reading text was categorized in poor level of understanding main idea. Besides, the result of questionnaire indicated that the main problem in reading lesson is that the methods used and the class situation. Therefore, the students do self motivation to enrich and memorize new vocabularies as an effort in improving their reading understanding. The implication of this study is to give the input to the lecturer of Reading subject to apply the appropriate method and technique, and create a nice class environtment.

Abstract

This study was aimed at improving vocabulary mastery through games. It is to see whether game can improve students’ vocabulary mastery and to know the effectiveness of using game in teaching class. The participants of this study were 10 students and one English lecturer at University of Muhammadiyah Aceh. The data were obtained from questionnaires that distributed to students and interview one lecturer to add more information. In analyzing the data, this study applied the qualitative descriptive method. The result of this study reveals that the implementation of game in teaching learning process is effective in which it encourages students’ motivation and involvement during the learning process. Indeed, it becomes the relevant way for lecturer to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate the types of grammatical errors in students’ speaking performances, the factors that cause the grammatical errors and the difficulties faced by English department students in speaking. The data were collected through observation and interview. The sample of this study was 10 students of English department at Tarbiyah Faculty of Muhammadiyah University, Aceh. The result of this study revealed that the students made the four types of grammatical errors which classified into omission, misformation, misorder, and overgeneralization. In errors of omission, the students mostly omitted use of verbs, subject, object, prepositions, plural nouns, articles, conjunctions, superlatives form, passive verbs, and to be. In misformation type, the students made incorrect form of verbs, noun, articles, object pronoun, and chosen words. For misordering type, the incorrect placement of verbs, adjectives, nouns, and modals were committed. Last, the students overused the adverb, objects, articles, prepositions, and to be, in overgeneralization. Also, the finding indicated that interlingua and intralingua transfer are two main factors that caused students’ grammatical errors in speaking. Meanwhile, the students’ understanding of grammar and chosen vocabulary were indicated as the problems faced by students in speaking performance..
