A case study design with data triangulation was employed. The analysis showed that the company hired and provided an excellent health service for 798 workers from the surrounding areas, fulfilled SR8600 standard and used eco-efficiency machines in its operations. Besides, it adopted ISO 14000, proactively performed societal marketing by producing biodegradable hand gloves, carried out eco-efficiency activities, and managed mutually satisfying relationships with key stakeholders. Finally, to create a green environment, the company performed waste treatment management, adopted energy efficiency measures, ensured the availability of raw materials to make products rapidly degraded by microorganisms hence better environment, and followed the stringent formal rules. The study inductively generated concepts and formulated a set of propositions leading to a proposed model.

Abstract

Destination marketing communication in agritourism is generally analysed through paid channels and social media, while direct interaction between farmers and visitors is rarely treated as a communication channel in its own right. This study aims to explain how the warmth of farmer-visitor interaction triggers word-of-mouth communication and how it relates to revisit intention in Indonesian agritourism. A qualitative approach using Straussian Grounded Theory procedures was applied. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with twenty-four informants across five agritourism destinations, namely Agro Rakyat, Hortimart Agro Center, Jatiluwih, Arjuna Farm, and Agrowisata Sodong as a contrasting comparison, complemented by observation and document tracing, then analysed using NVivo 14 through open and axial coding. Findings show that warmth and emotional closeness in interaction appeared in 23 of 24 data sources. What visitors found memorable was not standardised friendliness but farmers' willingness to share the difficulties of their work and the feeling of being received as a guest. The observed pathway consistently follows the Stimulus-Organism-Response framework, with the encounter as stimulus, satisfaction and emotional attachment as internal state, and revisit intention, recommendation, and social media storytelling as response. The study concludes that encounter quality constitutes a communication investment, and proposes sincerity as a candidate service quality dimension requiring further testing.

Abstract

The agritourism literature is dominated by studies of successful destinations, while destinations that fail are seldom examined systematically, even though these hold the clearest evidence of the minimum conditions agritourism must meet in order to survive. This study aims to explain the process of functional conversion at Agrowisata Sodong in Semarang City, which ceased operating as an agritourism destination in 2023 after shifting into a water-park-based recreation area, and to formulate an early detection model usable by destinations still in operation. The approach is qualitative, applying Straussian Grounded Theory procedures to a single case. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three key informants — the site manager, an officer of the sub-district community empowerment institution, and a sub-coordinator of the Semarang City Tourism Office — complemented by observation and document tracing, then analysed with NVivo 14, producing 89 substantive notes. The findings show that the failure was caused neither by limitations of land potential nor by accessibility, but by the sequential collapse of five foundations: conservation of productive land, farmer empowerment, participatory governance, innovation of the offering, and social philosophy. The process was cumulative and mutually contagious, with no single decision identifiable as the cause. On this basis the study formulates the Agritourism Foundation Erosion Model, a diagnostic instrument that maps the five foundations across four stages of erosion and sets a warning threshold for managers of destinations still in operation.
