Abstract

Abstract

This article is an anthropological and historical reflections about the concept of nationalism which takes place on the dialectical interpretation on local and national identities in Maluku context. The main idea is on the effort to discover historical nexus about nationalism interpretatively that often disappear behind the grand narrative discourses about separatism of RMS (Republic of South Maluku) revolt whenever discussing the place of Maluku on Indonesian political map. By using combined methods of social hermeneutics and political anthropology paradigms, the elaboration developed in this article is unfolding new narrative of nationalism that might not be seen simply through centralistic viewpoint but analyzing various socio-political and historical interpretations of small narratives as the center of perspectives that must be considered within the discourse of Indonesian nationalism.

Abstract

During 2017-2019 a few cases of suicide amongst Christian teenagers in the city of Ambon have been linked to the infl uence of “suanggi” that has connotations of being the representation of an evil supernatural power. By using the qualitative research method with a case study approach, the article is focused on the religious reactions of the Christian community in their understanding and rationalization of these two phenomena. Data is collected through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and personal interviews. All collected qualitative data are analyzed by social hermeneutical analysis. The results of the study have shown that: (1) Social change that occurred amongst the people of Ambon has implications in the shift of traditional order of living values, at the same time clashes between the custodians of cultural traditions and morality (church) have occurred. (2) Within the Ambonese community, religion does not only symbolize certain systems of belief, but also becomes the institution that provides a place for the communal spirit and protects the shared morality through its teachings and the practice of its rituals. (3) The phenomena of suicide amongst teenagers in Ambon, the circulation of information concerning the influence of “suanggi”, and the reactive response of the Christian community reflects the clash between the insistence for social change amongst the urban communities.

Abstract

Kata kunci: teologi agama-agama, pluralitas sosio-budaya, identitas sosial This article elaborates theological issues in socio-cultural context of Indonesian society as the arena for doing theology contextually. One main issue of socio-cultural plurality in Indonesia, primarily since the colonial up till post-colonial era, is about the encounter of various religious traditions either local community’s religiosity or interaction with and/or conversion into so-called world religions from outside. This article shall not conduct dogmatic exploration but using the dialectics of contextual theology and theology of religions from Christian viewpoints. Perspective of theology of religions shall be implemented firstly to examine an experimentation of Christian contextual theology in Indonesia. Bevans’ anthropological model has been chosen as the analytical lens as well as criticism against tripolar typology (exclusivism-inclusivism-pluralism) introduced by Alan Race. Three geographic and cultural contexts, namely Yogyakarta (Central Java), Bali (Bali) and Tana Toraja (South Sulawesi) are utilized as the basis for doing contextual theology. Experience-based of theological experimentation and elaboration in those three contexts have been constructed as the beginning process to discover a model of theology of religion in Indonesia. Keywords: theology of religions, socio-cultural plurality, social identity

Abstract

One indicator in examining religious dynamics is the formation of a religious institution and its existence in its history. This article attempts to analyze the historical dynamics of the establishment of the religious institution, namely the Protestant Church of Maluku (GPM) in the Maluku (Ambon) socio-cultural context. The scrutiny for exploring documents and constructing some interpretations of them is carried out using the social hermeneutic method to understand (verstehen) the dialectic between ideal principles through the internalization of Christian religious teachings and responses to various socio-cultural-political changes in the context in which it lives. The hermeneutic analysis is carried out to obtain a comprehensive understanding about the existence and religious orientation of the GPM, which is also influenced by the dialectic of encounters with various other identities. Keywords: identity politics, Christianity, tradition, modernity

Abstract

This article focuses on the roles of religious communities within particular social contexts which concern on environmental sustainability. On the one side, it contains a holistic notion, i.e. interconnection of all living fields and living beings with their milieu. It proves that religion's values to communal practices demonstrate a concern for natural sustainability. On the other side, the dynamic of such interest toward environmental sustainability influences a critical exploration and even transformation of religious values. Among religious communities, in Maluku context, the Protestant Church of Maluku (Gereja Protestan Maluku – GPM) is a Christian community that deliberately and systematically struggles on the problem of environmental sustainability by its religious values (Christianity).

Abstract

The dynamic of development of Islam, either conceptually or institutionally, in Maluku should not be separated from the social history of Maluku society during colonial time of Westerners such as Portuguese and Dutch. This article attempts to reconstruct the dynamic of Islam especially in Ambon Island under colonization of the Dutch (VOC). The highly price of spices around sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had attracted many international traders coming to the spice island for trading spices (clove and nutmeg). Economic transaction and social interaction between local community of Ambon and foreign traders brought about significant social transformations mainly among indigenous people of Ambon, which was a trade center of spice at that time. Such social transformations escalated into political conflict between local community and Western colonizer (Dutch) who forced monopoly system of spice trading. Islam had been adhered by some local communities of Ambon at Leihitu Peninsula far before the Westerners was an important religion that conducted political-economic resistance and negotiated local identity facing colonial administration in Ambon at that time.
