Abstract

This study aims to find out the mediation effect of assessment as learning (AaS) model in a mobile-based module upon students’ higher-order thinking. This study is a Research and Development (R & D) and Experimental research. R&D method consisted of: information gathering, product planning, product development, product validation, preliminary test, limited trial, revision, product implementation, and dissemination. The experimental method was one-group time-series design. Data is gathered by using the online assessment sheets. This study employed 40 students of vocational high school. The interpretation of higher-order thinking improvement is based on the criteria of value gain. In addition to calculating the gain score, this study uses a hypothesis. The hypothesis is tested by comparative two samples technique. The result shows that assessment as learning model in mobile-based module has improved student’s higher order thinking skills. The teacher needs to consider the use of the assessment as learning model on the learning module.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to produce a Teaching Industry-based (TI-based) learning model in accordance with the characteristics of Independent Curriculum (IC) in Vocational High Schools (VHS) and produce an TI-based learning modules for implementation of learning in accordance with IC in VHS. This study is a research & development that follows the development model of Plomp (2007), which starts from initial investigation, model testing, and model implementation. Yet, in the initial stage, this study focuses on the design of TI-based learning model and the development of TI-based learning modules that are in accordance with the characteristics of IC. The model development procedure starts with study of the teaching industry theories, the learning models theories that are relevant to the TI concept, and the independent curriculum concept. Furthermore, the syntax of TI-based model in the context of IC is adopted and elaborated from learning syntaxes relevant to the TI concept. The learning module developed starts from the step of analyzing learning objectives and work competencies that must be mastered by students (hard skills and soft skills). Furthermore, the module was tested on users with 45 respondents. The data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis techniques to describe the feasibility of the learning module.

Abstract

Purpose – Vocational education continues to face a persistent competency gap between graduates and industry demands. The Teaching Factory (TeFa) model at SMK Negeri 10 Makassar has been implemented as a strategic approach to enhance students’ employability skills. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of the TeFa model and assess its effectiveness in developing students’ work character and technical competencies. Methods – A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were collected from 54 students through structured questionnaires, while qualitative data were obtained through observations and in-depth interviews with 12 teachers and industry partners. Findings – The results show moderate implementation quality, with SOP compliance at 70.3% and effective communication at 68.5%. A notable perception gap was identified, in which students rated their discipline (61.1%) and time management (64.8%) highly, whereas teachers and industry partners perceived these areas as major weaknesses. Furthermore, 38.9% of students reported a neutral perception of the improvement in their hard skills, indicating infrastructure constraints and the phenomenon of pseudo-discipline. Although the TeFa model demonstrates potential in character building, its effectiveness in strengthening technical competencies remains limited. Research implications – Findings from this single-case study are contextual to SMK Negeri 10 Makassar and should be further validated in broader vocational education contexts. This study recommends the adoption of “Industrial Mirroring” strategies and systematic role rotation to better align student perceptions with industrial standards. Originality – This study contributes by revealing the perception gap between students, teachers, and industry partners regarding work character and technical competency development within the Teaching Factory implementation in vocational education.
