Abstract

High prevalence of worm infection in Indonesia (70-80%) partially identified as Soil Transmitted Helminthes (STH) from Nematodes, but Cestodes and Trematodes is also found in Indonesia. Worm infection named as neglected diseases because it doesn’t cause mortality although reduced the quality of human resources. It will be important to do research to get the worm infection database for the effective planning action in worm infection fighting. It was an observational research by cross sectional design; research had been done in March-December 2010 in Nunukan, one of border areas, at 9 public health center areas. Population were all students of primary school in Nunukan, samples were primary school students chosen by purposive sampling. The research had been done by explain informed consent, distribution and collection of feces pot and microscopic analysis by direct method. Data were analyzed by Chi square in SPSS-13.0 program. The microscopic analysis found 20.8% positive worm infection of 1126 samples. The highest is caused by STH that is Ascaris lumbricoides and the highest proportion is found in village areas that the environment modification and infrastructure development doesn’t work well. Students of primary school in the village areas have almost five fold risk to get worm infection than city areas. Worm infection tends to be higher in village areas compare to that of city areas because the environment modification and infrastructure development in city areas is better than village areas.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Title: Contamination Of Worm Egg And Larvae In Soil At Juku Eja Village Tanah Bumbu RegencyBackground: Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) is an infectious disease by intestinal nematode. This neglected disease  can cause nutritional deficiencies, anemia, growth barriers and cognitive development, especially in children. STH transmission occurs through contact with parasitic eggs or larvae that develop in warm and moist soils, so this study aims was determine the presence of intestinal helminth eggs and larvae in the soil of Juku Eja Village, which is the cause of the high prevalence of helminthiasis in SDN Juku Eja.Method: Research using cross sectional design. Soil sampling was carried out at 5 points at SDN Juku Eja and 17 points around the residential area of Juku Eja Village. Soil samples examination was using the flotation method and then the preparations are examined under a microscope.Result: Result was found 2 positive samples of hookworm larvae (hookworm) at SDN Juku Eja and 1 spot  positive  of Trichuris trichiura egg in the residential area. Soil conditions at both locations are sandy beach. Soil contamination by eggs and STH worm larvae is caused by the habit of defecating on the beach by the community, the unavailability of family latrines and the habit of not using footwear on the ground Conclusion: Contamination of soil by eggs and worm larvae can be a source of risk of transmission of STH infections if there is human contact with the soil without self-protection and clean and healthy living habits.

Abstract

The phenomena of El nino and La nina are closely related to rainfall and its impact on various fields. Rainfall is an element of weather and climate that greatly influences all aspects of life including health, especially mosquito vector-borne diseases in Indonesia such as Dengue  hemorrhagic fever (DHF), malaria, chikungunya, zika, and others. In this regard, an analytical study was carried out on the effect of El nino and La nina on DHF and malaria cases in Indonesia. This paper is the result of data analysis from the study "The Influence of El nino and La nina on Seasonal Variability in South Kalimantan" and the data of DHF and malaria cases obtained from the Data and Information Center of the Ministry of Health of Indonesia. Descriptive analysis was carried out on the trend of DHF and malaria cases fluctuation associated with El nino and La nina phenomena that occurred throughout the time period 2007-2017. El nino and La nina phenomena affect fluctuations in DHF and malaria cases related to increased and decreased of rainfall which affect the growth and development and also the activity patterns of mosquito as vectors of transmitting DHF and malaria. The increase of DHF cases in Indonesia was influenced by "strong" El nino and "moderate" La nina while the increase of malaria cases in Indonesia was more influenced by "strong" and "moderate" La nina events.

Abstract

Introduction: Dengue remains a major public health concern in Indonesia, including Banjarmasin. Insecticide-based interventions, such as fogging and larviciding, are key components of dengue vector control. However, improper implementation can lead to insecticide resistance, reducing program effectiveness. Methods: This qualitative study aimed to evaluate the implementation of insecticide use in the dengue control program in Banjarmasin. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document reviews at national, provincial, and municipal levels. A total of 60 informants were purposively selected, including stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, provincial and city health offices, pharmaceutical warehouses, community health centers, sub-districts, and urban villages. Data were analyzed using a deductive Input-Process-Output (IPO) model and inductive gap analysis. Triangulation was applied to ensure data validity. Results and Discussion: The study revealed that the absence of national and local insecticide resistance mapping hinders the implementation of insecticide rotation policies. Other challenges include a shortage of trained entomology personnel, limited training, weak intersectoral coordination, and poor dissemination of vector control regulations, particularly regarding fogging procedures. Moreover, unsupervised community-led fogging often deviates from standard operating procedures. Conclusion: Strengthening human resource capacity, improving insecticide distribution planning based on resistance data, and enhancing regulatory enforcement are critical to improving program effectiveness. Promoting community-based approaches is also essential to support sustainable and responsive dengue vector control strategies.
