Abstract

Background: Pluchea indica (L.) Less leaf contains antibacteria substances that can inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause dental and oral diseases. Previous research shows that Pluchea indica (L.) Less leaf extract can inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. This research aimed to find out effectiveness of Pluchea indica (L.) Less leaves to decrease in the number of salivary bacteria colony.Method: This research used a sample of saliva obtained from a person who has dental caries. The saliva had been treated with Pluchea indica (L.) Less leaves ethanol extract with concentration 2,5%, 3,5%, 4,5%, 5,5%, and 6,5%. Bacterial colonies were calculated using a colony counter and no identification was performed.Result: The mean of bacteria colony number in Plate Count Agar media without Pluchea indica (L.) Less leaves ethanol extract is 142,67. After being given Pluchea indica (L.) Less leaves ethanol extract with concentration of 2,5%, 3,5%, and 4,5%, the mean of bacteria colony number sequentially are 15,67, 10,67, 4, and at a concentration of 5.5% and 6.5% no more bacterial colonies were found. Conclusion: Pluchea indica (L.) Less leaves ethanol extract effective to inhibit and eliminate oral bacteria.

Abstract

Dental plaque is a colorless thin layer, is not easily visible on the tooth surface and it causes caries. Disclosing solution is the material that can help us to see dental plaque. Chemical disclosing solution, which now exists, has several disadvantages so we need to develop natural disclosing solution. One of the ingredients in natural disclosing solution that has been studied for its effect is betacyanin, which is contained in super-red dragon fruit (Hylocereus costaricensis). This study aim to observe the coloring effect of super-red dragon fruit juice. The experimental was conducted by measuring plaque index of 20 people, who were not to clean their teeth for 24 hours (two periods), and were eaten the same foods in each period. Examination of plaque index at the end of the first period used chemical disclosing solution contains of erythrosine (FDC Red #3) and the second period used super-red dragon fruit juice. The datas were analyzed by Paired T-test. The results of the plaque index score at the first (2.47815 ± 0.811497), the second (2.7731 ± 1.0512) and did not find a significant difference (p > 0.05). The ability of super-red dragon fruit to coloring dental plaque has no difference with chemical disclosing solution, so it can be used as a natural disclosing solution.

Abstract

Background: Tumour is an uncontrolled swelling of tissue. Tumour caused by uncontrolled proliferation abnormal tissue and cell. Based on the nature of the tumour, there are two types of tumours, that is benign tumour and malignant tumour. The malignant tumour can cause death while benign tumour only aggravate the surrounding tissue. The high incidence of tumors in various countries, including Indonesia, rarely finds research on the prevalence of oral tumors, especially in East Kalimantan, especially the capital city of Samarinda. Objective: This research is to find out the incidence of oral cavity tumour at RSUD Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie periode 2016-2020 . Method: Used was a descriptive observational method retrieving secondary data in the form of medical records. The sampling method used in this research was the purposive sampling method. Results: the profile of patients with oral cavity tumour at Regional General Hospital Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie 2016-2020 are as follows the age group with the highest incidence is 46-55 years: 32 patients (24,8%), The highest incidence by gender were women: 78 patients (60.5%) and man: 51 patients (39,5%). Most of the tumour were found in the mandible: 65 patients (50,4%). Conclusion: The prevalence of oral cavity tumour is higher in female patients than male patients.

Abstract

Periodontitis is an inflamation of supporting tissues on teeth that became the main cause of Prophyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) bacteria. Treatment of periodontitis is by giving antibacterial agent therapy. Plants that have antibacterial effects one are Eleutherine bulbosa (UEB) bulbs from the Iridaceae family. This plant has been used for ethnobotany boils drugs and has been known to have antibacterial activity toward against intestinal pathogen bacteria that is anaerobic Gram Negative, but still unknown its activity against on oral pathogenic bacteria such as P. gingivalis. The purpose of this study was to know the effect of UEB extract on the growth of P. gingivalis bacteria as in vitro. UEB is taken from agriculture center in Samarinda city. UEB Simplisia was tested for antibacterial activity using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method on BHI-A media supplemented with vitamin K and hemin. The bacteria which used were P. gingivalis ATCC® 33277. Blank disc 6 mm with nine concentrations attached to BHI-A medium, incubated for 24 hours at 37 °C in an anaerobic atmosphere, then sprayed MTT (3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazole-2-yl]-2,5-diphenylttetrazoliumbromide) reagent and read a few moments later. For comparison, then used Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) 2 mg/ml. The statistical analysis with t-test and there was significant different if p<0.05. The result showed that the higher concentration of UEB ethanol extract will increase the growth inhibition zone of P. gingivalis bacteria and reach maximum at 10 mg/ml concentration. The result of t-test showed no difference significant of P. gingivalis bacterial inhibition zone in the treatment group of 7.5 mg/ml and 10 mg/ml concentration on CHX group. This study proves UEB ethanol extract can inhibit the growth of P. gingivalis bacteria.

Abstract

Povidone iodine is an antiseptic that is often used for wounds after tooth extraction, but is often debated because it can cause damage to cells and tissues. African leaf (Vernonia amygdalina Del.) from the family Asteraceae has saponins as anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant flavonoids as that all may be able to accelerate wound healing. To investigate the activity of extracts of Vernonia amygdalina folia (VAF) to accelerate the process of wound healing after tooth extraction in rats. VAF extracted by maceration using methanol. Wistar male rats as much as 6 groups (n = 5 mice each group) performed tooth extractions, and then observed the reduction of gingival socket closure for 21 days after being given povidone iodine, distilled water and methanol extract group VAF by 4 concentration. The closure of the wound after tooth extraction in the group of povidone iodine rats occurred on the 8th day, the group aquadest cover the wound occurred on the 12th day, the extract group 1, 3, 5, 7% sequentially occur wound closure on day 6th, 5th, 4th and 4th. VAF methanol extract of the leaves can accelerate wound healing after tooth extraction of mice
