Abstract

Material restoratif glass-hybrid mengalami peningkatan kekasaran dalam larutan dengan pH rendah namun belum banyak diteliti nilai sifat kilau permukaannya dalam saliva pH rendah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh berbagai pH saliva buatan terhadap sifat kilau permukaan material restoratif glass-hybrid. Spesimen restorasif glass-hybrid (EQUIA® Forte Glass-Hybrid Restorative System, GC Japan) (90 buah) dibagi dalam 9 kelompok (n=10) perlakuan perendaman dalam saliva buatan dengan pH 4,5; 5,5; 7, dan waktu perendaman 1 jam, 24 jam, dan 72 jam. Uji kilau permukaan menggunakan Glossmeter (Novo-Curve Rhopoint Instrument, UK) dengan sudut 60o. Data dianalisa statistik dengan One-way ANOVA untuk mengetahui kemaknaan nilai kilau permukaan antar kelompok spesimen. Nilai kilau permukaan pada kelompok perendaman dalam saliva buatan pH 4,5 selama 1 jam, 24 jam dan 72 jam menghasilkan nilai 35,8±2,77 GU; 37,07±2,03 GU, dan 41,3±4,09 GU. Kelompok dalam saliva buatan pH 5,5: 1 jam, 24 jam, dan 72 jam mengalami kenaikan nilai kilau permukaan menjadi 33,68±3,23 GU; 34,145±2,6 GU, dan 37,73±1,81 GU. Nilai surface gloss pada perendaman saliva buatan pH 7: 1 jam, 24 jam, dan 72 jam adalah 32,93±3,23 GU; 32,77±2,42 GU, dan 32,98±2,34 GU. Disimpulkan pada pH saliva buatan lebih rendah dan peningkatan lama perendaman terjadi peningkatan sifat kilau permukaan material restoratif glass-hybrid.

Abstract

Characterization of a material in dentistry has been developed for research purposes. One of the characterization tools that are often used in dentistry is Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is a technique used to obtain the absorbance pattern of a compound of a material. FTIR can be used to analyze organic and inorganic compounds. In addition, FTIR can also be used for qualitative analysis including functional group analysis (the presence of a 'peak' from a specific functional group) along with its pattern and quantitative analysis by looking at the absorption strength of compounds at certain wavelengths. determine the composition of the compounds that make up a material. This paper aims to examine the use of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy FTIR as a characterization tool in dentistry. The spectral image pattern produced by the ATR-FTIR tool can provide information on the composition of the compound so that it becomes one of the tools of choice for characterizing a material.

Abstract

Background: The temperature and salivary pH in a person's mouth are highly dynamic (e.g., before, during, and after eating) and so restorations in a cavity must be resilient to these variable conditions. Temperature and immersion conditions affect the mechanical properties of a restoration. This study aimed to determine the effect of environmental conditions on diametral tensile strength (DTS) and surface microhardness of a resin composite with alkaline fillers or zirconia–reinforced glass ionomer cement (Zr-reinforced GIC). Method: Thirty specimens of a resin composite with alkaline fillers (Cention-N, Ivoclar-Vivadent, Lichtenstein) and 30 specimens with zirconia-reinforced GIC (Zirconomer, Shofu, Japan) were stored at different conditions (23°C and 37°C; with and without immersion in water) for 24 hours. DTS was tested with a Universal Testing Machine (AGS-X series, Shimadzu, Japan) and surface microhardness was tested with a Vickers Microhardness tester (HMV-G Series Micro Vickers Microhardness Tester, Shimadzu, Japan). Data were analyzed statistically using a one-way ANOVA test (and Shapiro-Wilk test. Result: The values of microhardness and DTS increased significantly both for the composite resin alkasite and zirconia-reinforced GIC with increasing temperature in the groups without immersion. However, there was a significant decrease in microhardness and DTS after immersion in distilled water at 37°C for both the composite resin alkasite and zirconia-reinforced GIC. Conclusion: It can be concluded that storage conditions affect the microhardness and DTS of resin composite Alkasite and Zirconia-reinforced GIC

Abstract

Background: Pulp wound healing is a critical aspect of endodontics, aiming to preserve the vitality and function of dental pulp tissues. Natural compounds have gained attention for their potential therapeutic applications in dentistry. Mauli banana (Musa acuminata) is a tropical fruit in South Kalimantan as one of the natural plants that have the ability as antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects contains various bioactive molecules with potential pulp wound healing properties. Purpose: to identify and evaluate the functional groups present in mauli banana stem extracts. Methods: This study is true experimental research, the samples were mauli banana stem that were extracted with maceration technique and were subjected to Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy test. Results: Identification of functional groups of organic compounds from mauli banana are as follows: a) Peak 3638.95 cm-1  show O-H (nonbonded hydroxy group, OH stretch primary) component alcohol, b) Peak 3265.82 cm-1is C-H (alkane), c) Peak 2928.09 cm-1  refer to OH (carboxylic acid hydrogen bonds) and aldehydes groups, d) peak 1571.35 cm-1 refers to amide, C=O - asymetric stretching, e) peak 1400.82 cm-1, refers to CO2- symetric stretching and carboxylate (carboxylic acid salt) CH2 scissoring, f) peak 1030.17 cm-1 refers to C=C (alkanes), aliphatic phosphate, g)  Peak 520.53 cm-1 refers to inorganic phosphates. Conclusion: FTIR spectra analysis of mauli banana stem extract show the presence of O-H hydroxy groups, aldehydes groups, carbonyl groups, aliphatic groups, carbonyl groups, amides groups and C-O stretching vibrations suggests that the extract contains various bioactive molecules with potential pulp wound healing properties.

Abstract

Latar Belakang: Ketahanan kuat rekat resin komposit-dentin yang karies menjadi permasalahan dikarenakan terjadidemineralisasi parsial oleh enzim kolagenolitik yaitu matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Enzim MMPs dapatmengakibatkan degradasi matriks kolagen pada lapisan hibrida. Maka dilakukan pra-perlakuan dentin menggunakanagen pengikat silang eksogen berupa larutan flavonoid sebagai inhibitor MMPs. Selain itu, dapat juga menggunakanagen remineralisasi pada dentin yang karies sebagai pra-perlakuan untuk meningkatkan kuat rekatnya. Tujuan:Mengevaluasi pengaruh pra-perlakuan dentin menggunakan berbagai senyawa flavonoid, agen remineralisasimaupun kombinasi keduanya terhadap kuat rekat resin komposit-dentin. Metode: Gigi premolar atau molar padapermukaan dentin diaplikaskan pra-perlakuan (flavonoid, agen remineralisasi dan kombinasi) selama 1 menitsebelum aplikasi material adhesif lalu dievaluasi dengan uji kuat rekat tarik mikro. Pembahasan: Peningkatan kuatrekat resin komposit-dentin pada uji kuat rekat Tarik mikro kelompok yang diberikan pra-perlakukan dentindibandingkan tanpa pra-perlakuan karena senyawa flavonoid mengikat kolagen fibril agar tidak dapat terdegradasioleh enzim MMPs. Lalu agen remineralisasi juga menginduksi mineral apatit baru yang meningkatkan kuat rekatdentin. Kesimpulan: Pengaruh pra-perlakuan dentin menggunakan berbagai senyawa flavonoid dan agenremineralisasi dapat meningkatkan kuat rekat resin komposit-dentin yang telah yang mengalami karies (cariesaffected dentin/CAD).

Abstract

ABSTRAK  Pendahuluan: Penggunaan material pemutih gigi dapat meningkatkan estetika, namun berisiko meningkatkan kekasaran permukaan email, yang dapat memicu akumulasi partikel makanan dan pembentukan biofilm. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah Efek aplikasi fluoride varnish pada gigi yang telah dilakukan pemutihan gigi terhadap kekasaran permukaan email. Metode: Tiga puluh enam spesimen gigi premolar dibagi menjadi enam: kelompok HP-35% dan Clinpro White Varnish (3M-ESPE), kelompok HP-35% dan MI Varnish (GC Corp), kelompok HP-3% dan Clinpro White Varnish (3M-ESPE), kelompok HP-3% dan MI Varnish (GC Corp), dan dua kelompok kontrol yang dilakukan perendaman ke dalam larutan HP-35% dan HP-3%, dilanjutkan perendaman saliva buatan. Seluruh spesimen dilakukan uji kekasaran sebelum perendaman HP, setelah perendaman pada HP-35% selama 1 jam dan HP-3% selama 42 jam, serta kekasaran akhir setelah remineralisasi selama 6 jam suhu 370C. Hasil data diuji statistik uji Friedman. Hasil: Terdapat perbedaan bermakna (p<0,05) pada nilai rerata kekasaran permukaan email sebelum dan sesudah perendaman HP, serta terdapat perbedaan yang bermakna (p<0,05) nilai rerata kekasaran permukaan email gigi sesudah perendaman HP dan sesudah pengaplikasian FV. Walaupun terdapat penurunan nilai kekasaran, namun tidak terdapat perbedaan bermakna (p>0,05) nilai rerata kekasaran sebelum perendaman HP dan setelah aplikasi FV. Simpulan: Pemutihan gigi menimbulkan efek beragam terhadap kekasaran permukaan email. Terdapat peningkatan kekasaran permukaan email sesudah perendaman pada larutan HP-35% dan HP-3%, serta terdapat penurunan kekasaran pada permukaan email sesudah aplikasi FV Clinpro White Varnish (3M-ESPE) dan MI Varnish (GC Corp). KATA KUNCI: Kekasaran permukaan email, fluoride varnish, hidrogen peroksida, demineralisasi, remineralisasi. Effect of fluoride varnish application on enamel surface roughness of bleached teeth: experimental study ABSTRACT Introduction: Tooth bleaching enhances aesthetics but may increase enamel surface roughness, leading to food particle accumulation and biofilm formation. This study aims to evaluate the effect of fluoride varnish on the enamel surface roughness after bleaching. Methods: Thirty-six premolar specimens were divided into six groups: HP-35% with Clinpro White Varnish (3M-ESPE), HP-35% with MI Varnish (GC Corp), HP-3% with Clinpro White Varnish (3M-ESPE), HP-3% with MI Varnish (GC Corp), and two control groups immersed in HP-35% and HP-3%, followed by artificial saliva immersion. Surface roughness was measured initially, after bleaching (HP-35% for 1 hour or HP-3% for 42 hours), and after remineralization (6 hours at 37°C). Data were analyzed using the Friedman test. Results: Statistically significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in mean surface roughness before and after HP immersion, as well as between post-bleaching and post-FV application. However, despite a reduction in roughness values, no significant differences (p>0.05) were found between initial and post-FV application. Conclusions: The enamel surface roughness of bleached teeth exhibited varying effects depending on the treatment. Roughness increased after immersion in HP-35% and HP-3% solutions, but decreased following the application of FV Clinpro White Varnish (3M-ESPE) and MI Varnish (GC Corp). KEY WORDS: Enamel surface roughness, fluoride varnish, hydrogen peroxide, demineralization, remineralization

Abstract

Power chains elastomers are one of the most commonly used devices in orthodontic treatment. Recently, herbal toothpastes containing siwak extract has been developed, which shown to be more effective in reducing plaque index compared to non-herbal toothpastes. However, siwak extract contains fluoride that may reduce tensile force. This study aimed to analize the effect of herbal siwak toothpaste and non-herbal toothpaste on the tensile force of orthodontic power chains elastomers. A total of 144 power chain elastomer specimens were immersed in treatment groups,Aquadest and Pepsodent Complete 8 Siwak toothpaste solution, Aquadest and Pepsodent toothpaste solution, and Aquadest as the control group. The tensile force of the power chain elastomer was measured using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) after immersion for 6, 42, 84, 126, and 168 minutes. The data were analyzed using one way ANOVA test. The result showed that after the immersion, the tensile force of power chain elastomers in aquadest, non-herbal toothpaste, and herbal siwak toothpaste were significantly different (p0,05). Herbal siwak toothpaste caused a smaller reduction in the tensile force of the orthodontic power chain elastomers compared to non-herbal toothpaste. It can be concluded that immersion in herbal siwak toothpaste results in a greater reduction in tensile force compared to the control group, which was immersed in Aquadest.

Abstract

Introduction: In recent years, the medical field has begun to use medicinal plant in the manufacture of modern medicines. Most of the medicinal plants used have antibacterial properties such as cinnamon, clove, betel, and holy basil. These medicinal plants could be used in the manufacture of fluoride varnish to support antibacterial properties in preventing the development of dental caries. Objective: This study aimed to provide update review of medicinal plant used as antibacterial agent in the fabrication of fluoride varnish to prevent dental caries. Method: Data collection were carried out by searching the literature on article search sites, namely PubMed and Scopus which were published from 2017 to 2022. Data searches were carried out systematically using the keywords fluoride varnish, dental caries, antibacterial, and fabrication. The author performs data search, data selection, and data extraction. Results: Only nine articles were found after a thorough selection process and database search using search terms and keywords. Seven of the studies were in vitro study and two was randomized clinical trial (RCT). In the overall fluoride varnish efficacy study, adding medicinal plant as an antibacterial agent showed strong antibacterial action against S. mutans with great bacterial inhibition zone. Together with its constituent parts, the fabricating method, such as the temperature and stirring rate, influence the optimal result of fluoride varnish. Conclusion: The addition of medicinal plants and method modification in the fabrication of fluoride varnish showed potential antibacterial properties that enhance higher fluoride release.
