Abstract

Background: North Hulu Sungai Banjarmasin people are using banana stem mauli to accelerate wound healing in the skin. Mauli banana stem extract contains antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. Need the development of traditional plants that can be used as a topical antiseptic drug in the oral cavity. Purpose: to determinethe anti fungal effectivity of methanolextractof 100% mauli banana stem compared with the ethanol extractof 100% mauli banana stem. Methods and materials: pure laboratory experimental research with the completely randomized designusing 3 treatments with 9 replications. Making 100% banana mauli stemextractby maceration method using the solution of ethanol and methanol.The sample wasa pure culture of Candida albicans. Saboroud agar petridish were contained Candida albicans that have given filter paper soaked for 3 hours with100% methanol extract of mauli banana stem, 100% ethanol extract of mauli banana stem, and 0,2% Clorhexidine gluconate. Inhibition zone diameter of three treatments was compared after doing incubation for 1 day. It using the diffusion method. Results: Kruskal Wallis test of the three treatment resulted p value=0.00(p <0.05) that H0 was rejected, so i tcould be concluded that there were significant differences between the three treatments. Mann Whitney test resulted that the treatment of 100% ethanol was compared with100% methanol resulted p = 0.00 (p <0.05).There was a significant difference between the treatmentof 100% ethanoland 100% methanol to the growthness of Candida albicans.Conclusion: The results ofthe studyit appears that the banana stem mauli have antimicrobial activity. Methanol extract of banana stem mauli has a total flavonoids was higher than the ethanol extractof banana stem mauli. This makes methanol extracts had higher antifungal activity than the ethanol extract. Key words : Antifungal, Diffusion method, Ethanol, Extract, Mauli banana stem, Methanol.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Traumatic ulcer is one of oral disorders that often occur. The prevalence is quite high, between 3-24% of population. Therapy of traumatic ulcer is symptomatic. People usually use Aloe vera extract gel. Previous research showed that the Aloe vera gel is equivalent with ethanol extract of 25% Mauli banana (Musa acuminata) stem in accelerating wound healing based on the number of macrophages and neovascular. The objective of the study is to find out the time difference of traumatic ulcer healing using 25% Musa acuminata stem extract gel compared to a gel containing Aloe vera extract. Methods: The research was post test design. Subjects were patients of Oral Medicine Installation in Gusti Hasan Aman Dental Hospital Banjarmasin with diagnosis of traumatic ulcer using completely random sampling method. Eight patients as samples were determined by the formula of Lemeshow. Results: there was no significant difference with p=0,724 (p>0,05) between healing time using Aloe vera gel and 25% Musa acuminata stem extract. Conclusion: At the concentration of 25% Musa acuminata stem extract gel concentration has the same healing time with Aloe vera gel, therefore can be recommended as a topical use for traumatic ulcer healing.Keywords: Musa acuminata stem, Healing time, Traumatic ulcer

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Mauli banana stem extract has antifungal effectiveness against Candida albicans because it has flavonoid, saponin, and tannin substances. Chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% is widely used to treat oral candidiasis caused by Candida albicans fungal infection. Chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% is known to have caused side effects. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to knowing the antifungal effectiveness differences between 25%, 80%, 100% mauli stem methanol extracts and chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% against Candida albicans. Methods: This study was true experimental with post test-only with control group design consisted of 4 treatment groups. Treatment group I,II,III each was given 25%, 80%, 100% mauli banana stem methanol extract respectively and treatment group IV was given chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% as positive control group. The repetition of each treatment was 7 times. Antifungal effectiveness was assessed by measuring inhibition zone of Candida albicans growth using diffusion method. Results: This research showed that mean inhibition zone of treatment group I (13 mm), treatment group II (17 mm), treatment group III (19 mm), and treatment group IV (21 mm). One-way Anova test indicated that there was significant difference between 25%, 80%, 100% mauli banana stem methanol extracts and chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2%. Conclusion: Based on the Post-hoc Bonferroni test, it can be concluded that 100% concentration mauli banana stem methanol extract had more prominent antifungal effectiveness than 25% and 80% against Candida albicans but still less effective than chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2%.Keywords: mauli banana stem extract, antifungal effectiveness, Candida albicans, chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2%ABSTRAK Latar Belakang: Ekstrak batang pisang mauli memiliki efektivitas antifungi terhadap Candida albicans karena mengandung senyawa flavonoid, saponin, dan tanin. Chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% biasanya digunakan untuk mengobati kandidiasis oral yang disebabkan oleh infeksi jamur Candida albicans. Chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% diketahui dapat menimbulkan efek samping. Tujuan: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan efektivitas antifungi ekstrak metanol batang pisang mauli konsentrasi 25%, 80%, 100% dan chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% terhadap Candida albicans. Metode: Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental murni dengan post test-only with control group design yang terdiri dari 4 perlakuan. Perlakuan I,II,III masing-masing diberikan ekstrak metanol batang pisang mauli konsentrasi 25%, 80%, 100% dan perlakuan IV diberikan chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% sebagai kontrol positif. Jumlah pengulangan setiap perlakuan adalah 7 kali. Efektivitas antifungi dinilai dari mengukur zona hambat pertumbuhan Candida albicans dengan metode difusi. Hasil: Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata zona hambat yang terbentuk pada perlakuan I (13 mm), perlakuan II (17 mm), perlakuan III (19 mm), dan perlakuan IV (21 mm). Uji Oneway Anova menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan bermakna antara efektivitas antifungi ekstrak methanol batang pisang mauli konsentrasi 25%, 80%, 100% dan chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2%.Kesimpulan: Berdasarkan uji Post-hoc Bonferroni dapat disimpulkan bahwa efektivitas antifungi ekstrak metanol batang pisang mauli konsentrasi 100% lebih besar dibandingkan 25% dan 80%, tetapi masih kurang efektif dengan chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2%.

Abstract

Background: Wound healing is the body process to improve tissue intergrity caused by wound. Mauli banana stem is a potential plant which can be used as a medicine to accelerate wound healing. Mauli banana stem extract has some contents such as tannin and saponin which has immunomodulatory properties. Previous study states that mauli banana stem extract gel with 37,5% concentration can accelerate the healing of traumatic ulcers. Purpose: To analyze the effect of mauli banana stem extract gel application with 37,5% concentration on fibroblast cell count in wound healing process of oral mucosa wistar rat on the 7th day. Material and Methods: This study was a true experimental design with posttest only control group design. It consisted of three treatment groups: a group which given mauli banana (Musa acuminata) stem extract gel with 37,5% concentration, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose gel (negative group) and patent drug gel containing Aloe vera (positive group). Result: The mean value of fibroblast cell count in wound healing process on the 7th day of the treatment group (28,57), negative group (20,14), and positive group (23). One-way Anova’s test had shown a significant difference. Post Hoc LSD test showed a significant difference between mauli banana stem extract gel with 37,5% concentration with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose gel and patent drug gel containing Aloe vera. Conclusion: The application of mauli banana stem extract gel with 37,5% concentration can increase fibroblast cell count on the 7th day in wound healing process of oral mucosa.

Abstract

Background: Reversible pulpitis is a mild to moderate inflammatory condition of the pulp which often given pulp capping therapy as their treatments. Commonly used or "gold standard" material for pulp capping therapy is calcium hydroxide, but this material has side effect as an active therapeutic or chemical agent that can cause necrosis due to high pH. Mauli banana stem extract contains tannin and saponin compounds which have immunomodulatory properties that play a role in the pulp inflammatory process by increasing the number of macrophage. Objective: To prove the effect of mauli (Musa acuminata) banana extract gel concentration 37,5% upon macrophage cell count in pulp inflammation at day 3 and compare it with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH₂)). Methods and Materials: This research was a pure experimental study with post-test only control group design. This research used 3 treatment groups, which were a group of mauli banana group of mauli banana extract gel 37,5% as treatment group, a group of calcium hydroxide as positive control group and a group of Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) gel as negative control. Research Result: One Way Anova test results obtained p value = 0.0001 which means that there was a significant difference. Data analysis continued with Post Hoc Least Significant Difference (LSD) test which showed that there was significant difference between mauli banana extract gel concentration 37,5% with calcium hydroxide group with p value = 0,001 and with HPMC gel group p value = 0, 0001 (p <0,05), and there was no significant difference between the calcium hydroxide group and HPMC gel with p= 0,054 (p> 0,05). Conclusion: Provision of mauli banana extract gel 37,5% concentration can increase the number of macrophage cells on pulp inflammation on the 3rd day.

Abstract

Background: Toman fishcontains albumin and unsaturated fatty acids which can be an alternative of diabetes mellitus wounds healing process. People with diabetes mellitus have their neutrophil decreased. Albumin increases the number of neutrophil. Unsaturated fatty acid decreases the number of neutrophil. Purpose: To prove the effect of toman fish extract of 16 ml/Kg BW mice orally on thenumber of neutrophil in day 2, 4, and 8 of male wistarmice with diabetic wound. Materials and Method: This research applied pure experimental research method with posttest only control design. This research took 36 wistarmice which weredivided into negative control group which is given BR2 feed, treatment group which is giventoman fish extract in 16 mL/Kg BW mice and positive control group which is given haruan fish extract in 13.54 mL/Kg BW mice. The Result: One-way ANOVAshowedthat there wassignificant differenceof all groups in day 2 (p=0.000), day 4 (p=0.000) and day 8 (p=0.000). Post-Hoc LSD test for the average of neutrophil number showedthat there was significant difference (p<0.05) between the negative control group, treatment group and the positive control group. Conclusion: Toman fish extract has an effect which increasesthe number ofneutrophil in day 2 and decreasesthe number of neutrophil in day 4 and 8 on the healing of diabetic wound in mice.

Abstract

Background : Sialadenitis is the inflammation of the salivary gland. Predisposing factors for acute sialadenitis include diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, renal failure, and Sjögren syndrome. The most common bacterial cause of acute bacterial sialadenitis is Staphylococcus aureus. Purpose : to report the management of Acute bacterial sialadenitis, especially the recommendation antibiotic for treatment of  Acute bacterial sialadenitis. Case : Woman, 34 years old,  suffered the  pain of left buccal especially when she was eating. There was a lowgrade fever. She has been suffering since 3 days ago, but she did not give any drugs. The intra oral examination showed  the stenoni of parotid gland  was swollen and painful, and  erythematous. The purulent discharge often was observed from the duct orifice when the gland was checked by palpation. The patient was diagnosed as  Acute Bacterial sialadenitis. Case management : Amoxycillin caplet 500 mg three times a day,  Ibuprofen caplet 400 mg three times a day, and oral rinse contains aloevera gargle three times a day for seven days,  then the instruction to patient took a lot of rehydration. After seven days, Cefadroxil capsul 500 mg two times  a day replaced amoxycillin caplet 500 mg three times a day. Conclusion : It can  be concluded that Cephalosporins display superior pharmacokinetics in saliva and cover the spectrum of all bacteria implicated in sialadenitis.

Abstract

Introduction: Musa acuminata stem has both of imunostimulatory and imunosuppressant effects that are influenced by their concentrations. The study aimed to analyze the effect of Mauli banana stem extract (EMBS) to increase the number of macrophage and neovascular cells in traumatic ulcer healing. Methods: Rattus norvegicus of male Wistar strain  were used  as model of traumatic ulcer. The left buccal mucous was biopsied, then used the histopathology method to find the number of macrophage and neovascular cells. Results: EMBS gel was effected when administered at a concentration of 37.5% because it significantly increased the number of macrophage and neovascular cells in traumatic ulcer healing on the 3rd day to 5th days. Conclusion:  It can be concluded that EMBS within concentration of 37.5% can accelerate ulcer healing through the increasing  number of macrophage and neovascular cells.

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of a topical application of ethanolic extracts of Mauli banana stem on buccal mucosa wounds in rats (Rattus novergicus). Three sets of experiments with 3 groups male rats each consisted of 9 animals were used for studying wound oxidative stress status. Group 1 (P0) as the negative control was left to heal spontaneously; group 2 (P1) as the postive control were treated with alocair topically; and group 3 (P2) as treatment group were treated with ethanloic extracts of Mauli banana stem topically, respectively, 24h after wound creation for 3 days. The oxidative stress status was evaluated by monitoring the SOD, CAT activity, MDA and CC levels. The effect of ethanolic extracts of Mauli banana stem on oxidative stress status revealed significant increased in SOD activity, decreased in MDA levels, and no significant change both in CAT activity and CC levels compared to negative control. These results showed that The ethanolic extracts of Mauli banana stem might affect the oxidative stress status during wound healing process. Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis is an infectious disease which is the second-largest cause of death in the world after HIV / AIDS. Tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that usually attacks the lungs but can manifest in the oral mucosa. Clinical manifestations of oral Tuberculosis related to age, sex, duration of treatment, systemic disease, and Multi-Drug Resistant therapy. There is no research on descriptive studies of oral manifestations of tuberculosis patients in South Kalimantan, specifically in Banjarmasin. This study aims to analyze the clinical manifestations of oral Tuberculosis descriptively in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Method: This was a descriptive analysis with cross-sectional study design, based on history and clinical oral examination. It was used 30 respondents by purposive sampling method. Data were analyzed by Chi-square (p<0.05). Results: During treatment, it showed the correlation between xerostomia and systemic disease (diabetes mellitus and HIV/AIDS) are (p=0.007) and a correlation between xerostomia and duration of treatment (p=0.024). The correlation between candidiasis and systemic disease (p=0.024). The correlation between angular cheilitis and age, sex, duration of treatment, systemic disease, and Multi-Drug Resistant therapy (p>0.05). The clinical manifestations of oral Tuberculosis are xerostomia, candidiasis, and angular cheilitis.Conclusion: The duration of treatment and the systemic diseases are associated with xerostomia and candidiasis in the oral cavity of TB patients.
